4 PERSONAL POINT OF VIEW. In these columns some days since ap peared an Item relative to an old Irish street peddler. His specialty was black ing, vftiioh he recommended as possess ing some unusual qualities. I beKeve he said it would not stick to your hands and ■soil 'them. He said also, that it was a special blacking put up in Philadel phia. At any rate I learned yesterday that thia oily tongued Hibernian with the queer old wrinkled face bought every boa of this blacking from a wholesale house here, and it was nothing more or less than ''Masons.*’ He paidcents a donen for them and sold them for 10 cents each—4B cents of clear pro At. As he probably sold four or five dozen per day, he didn’t have a bad thing. The only trouble was soaking the label off. Barnum said: “The American people liked to be humbugged. ’ ’ It looks that way. Marietta is in the slough of despond. And well she may be. Listen to her tale of sorrow as told in the Journal of that city. “Had yon noticed the absence of at tractions on the streets this fall? Not a singledarky with his banjo has shown up with a liver pad or electric belt at tachment lurking in the rear. Dr. Kill me-quiek with his kill me sure remedies has entirely disappeared. The long haired dentist who pulled teeth where they were and where they weren’t, and sold you soap to wash your conscience, doesn’t puH teeth in public any more. Even the corn cure vender, who sold razor paste and electrio insoles, visits us no more, and people here have not seen a chart of the internal arrangement of the human body in so long a time that most of them have forgotten the func tions of the liver, kidney, spleen, stom ach and bowels, and no longer require Sagwa three times a dav to give them appetite. What is the matter?’’ “Alast and what can be the matter,” wails the echo from the hills and across the rolling valleys and e’en from the far distant and tumbling billows of the sea comes the plaintiff ory of woe, woe. Charlie Fat (think of that name) and Ed Mime are two negro hands employed in Barney’s stable. The other day they got a big juicy ’possum, They baked him in royal style at the fire in the sta ble rooms, and then set the suooulent dish aside to cool. When they went back to enjoy Brer ’Possum, it had disappeared. Then there were two of the maddest negroes in North Georgia in that stable. They ran to the door, and lo! going up by the Armstrong was the form of Will Dobbs, a small negro, bearing in triumph the pan of marsupial. His triumph was snort-lived. Boiling with hot wrath Charlie Fat aud Ed Mims swooped down on the pickaniny and his glorious bur den. A wail of despair, a scramble, and silence again engulfed the thoroughfare. The dirt besmeared and rended frag ments of possum strewed the surround ing neighborhood I was held up and threatened with most dire things right on the parlor floor of the Armstrong the other even ing. I was discussing the forth coming visit of Kris Kringle with two most charming and dainty little maids. A world depends upon the young wife. If she has taken proper care of herself and is healthy in a womanly way, the probabilities are all in fa vor of a happy home filled with the music of childish laughter. Too many young wo men neglect to take care of their womanly selves. They shrink from the distasteful “examinations” and "local treatment” upon which most physicians insist. There is no need for this. Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription acts di rectly on the important and delicate organs concerned in wifehood and motherhood. It makes them strong and, healthy. It allays inflammation, heals ulceration, soothes pain and gives the tortured nerves rest and tone. It prepares for wifehood and maternity. Taken during the expectant period, it ban ishes discomfort and makes the coming of baby easy and comparatively painless. It insures the new-comer’s health and an am ple supply of natural nourishment. Over 00,000 women have testified to its merits. Druggists who offer substitutes aim to get a few pennies extra profit. Dr. Pierce’s great book, “ Common Sense Medical Adviser,” would prevent more than half the sickness in any family. It gives the best advice for curing common ailments without a doctor. It tells all about anatomy and physiology and the origin of life, and is the most valuable, practical medical work ever printed. There was to 1 be a wonderful bride doll, a bureau, 1 toilet, sets, and scores of pretty toys 1 precious to the little misses, I was enjoying that talk even more than the enthusiastic speakers, when i suddenly a youth of some five summers 1 confronted me. His lipa carledin scorn, his eyes flashed forth aupresne indigna -1 tion, and his trim little figure was rigid ■ and erect. I quailed before that picture > of complete and burning wrath. My • knees grew weak beneath ase, and I fell 1 a trembling with fear. * ’Look here Mister. If yer fools wid 1 my doney, I’ll ent yer heart open wid my steel and scrape yer gizzard.” 1 That was too much and I fled in wild i terror down the steps and into the night Anthony Hope Hawkina, possibly the most popular and most widely read 1 novelist of the day has reached Chicago > on hie lecturing tour of the principal American cities. A Chicago Inter-Ocean man interviews him as follows: > “Weren’t you afraid to attempt a ■ .equal to ‘The Prisoner of Zenda.?’ And what sequel could there be?” “Yes, I know the prejudice against 1 sequels, and it took a good deal of thought to get a sequel. Perhaps if you think of it as long as I did you’ll think of one.” In answer to questions Mr. Hope said: ‘“The Dolly Dialogues’ were written for a newspaper, one at a time, and grew into a series. My first book, *A Man of Mark,’ I published at my own expense. I have come out clear on it, by now. My first successful book, ‘The Prisoner of Zenda,’was the fourth or fifth I wrote.” Mr. Hawkins is 34 years old, rather bald, good looking, and was a barrister by profession. Contrary to the habit of many authors, Mr. Hope does not sell a story until it i*. finished. In this way he avoids some of the sorrows of life. He doos not know how long it takes him to write a book. He writes a first draft, puts that away awhile, and then revises it several times. The published statement that he never revises is untrue. “Simon Dale” will be published in book form in the spring, and the sequel to “The Prisoner of Zenda” soon after. “Rupert of Hentzau.” the sequel to “The Prisoner of Zenda” began public ation in the December McClure’s on this side, and in Astor’s handsome magazine, “Pall Mall” in England. Atlanta, Dec. 2.—The purpose of a bill just introduced in the Georgia legis lature is to save Mrs. Elizabeth Nobles, the white woman now under death sen tence. The measure was introduced by Mr. Berry of Whitfield at the sugges tion of Governor Atkinson, who will soon be called upon to commute her sentence to life imprisonment or to an absolute pardon The bill is short in its provisions and it is clear that the measure was inspired by the Nobles case. It provides that the death penalty shall in no case be executed upon a woman who has been found guilty of murder, unless the jury which finds her guilty shall expressly recommend that she be hanged. As Mrs. Nobles’ jury did not recommend that she be hanged, the bill will apply to her case. It is urged by some that the measure will not apply to cases that have al ready been tried, but if that is true it will not defeat the purpose of the meas ure, as Governor Atkinson could have the backing of the laws of his state in commuting the old woman’s sentence to life imprisonment. It Brings Ravishing Dreams of Bliss. In southern Arizona the jail and prison officials have their hands full in trying to prevent the smuggling into their institutions of the seductive ma lignant. This is a kind of loco weed more powerful than opium. It is a dan gerous thing for the uninitiated to han ; die, but those who know its uses say it produces more ravishing dreams than : opium. The Mexicans mix it with to bacco and smoke it with cigarettes, in ' haling the smoke. When used in this : way, it produces a hilarious spirit in the smoker that cannot be equaled by ; any other form of dissipation. When smuggled inside the prison walls, the . Mexicans readily pay $4 an ounce for • it, but free men buy it on the outside for 50 cents.—San Francisco Call. TELE TBIBUNE FBIDAY. DBUEMBEB 3. 1897. Z .A... k ALABAMA MINERS STRIKE. A massmeeting of the miners at Day’s Gap formulated a final demand which the operators rejected. It is said all the miners in Walker county, except Amer ican and Mountain Top, are inle. Tun operators involved are the Virginia and Alabama Goal company, Oorona Coal company. Dear Creek Goal company and the Mosuitain Valley Goal and Goke company. The strike leaders claim the strike will spread to other Walker county mines, but the operators do not appear alarmed. Dig down to'the cause of your sick ness, if you want to get well and stay well. Most likely it’s indigestion. The irritating poisons of fermenting, putrid food, left in tbe stomach by Indigestion, -cause headache, neuralgia, nervousness, dizziness, stomach ache, nausea, irrita bility, and all the other well known symptoms of indigestion. They also cause many pains and dis orders which are often laid to other causes and hence are not easily cured. But as soon as the poisons are removed, all these symptoms and disorders disap pear, because there is nothing left to cause them. Nothing succeeds in this like Shaker Digestive Cordial, because it prevents the undigested food from fermenting in the stomach and helps the stomach to digest its food. Your ailment taken in time can bo thrown off, if neglected it will run on into great swifering and pain. Here is an illustration. Mrs. Lucy Goodwin, Holly, W. I could not stand but a few moments at a time without having that terrible bearing-down sensation. “ When I commenced taking Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound I only weighed 108 pounds, and could not sit up half a day; before, however, I had used a whole bottle, I was able to be about. I took in all about three bot tles of the Compound, and am entirely cured; now I weigh 131 pounds and feel like a new woman, stronger and better than ever in my life.” iSoit transpires that because of the virtues of Mrs. Pinkham’s wonderful Compound, »ven a vary sick woman can br cured and live to » yreen old age. “GODLESS EDUCATION.” . A Writer In the Augusta Chronicle Dis cusses Dr, Plunket’s Address. The following communication re cently appeared in the Augusta Chronicle: Editors Chronicle —The Rome Trib une quotes Rev. Dr. Plunket as ray ing in an address at the Presbyterian synod recently held in this city: “Only 10 per cent.of our young men are members of the Christian church, 75 per cent, never go to church, 85 per cent, of our criminals are under 30 years of age, and 75 per cent, of the frequenters of saloons, gambling hells, bawdy houses, are from the compara tive youth of the land. ” The character of education received in the state schools Is, in part, respon sible for this. I know the constitution of our gov- i ernment cannot admit religious in struction into its institutions of learn ing, but nevertheless it is true that the spirit of unbelief has honey combed itself into our state educa tional enterprises. Literature is , pregnant with unbelief, and our young people are fed on unwholesome mental food. This, Mr. Editor,is a terrible indict ment, and yet other earnest thinkers, as Mrs. Dr. Felton, Rev. Sam Jones, and Bill Arp, have expressed some what similar views Where is the fault? The educational system is lib erally sustained by public taxes; the managers or superintendents are ac- , tive and zealous; and there probably i never was a time when teachers were so anxious to perfect themselves for their work. Yet look at the evidences of juvenile depravity. This state has spent a sum of $14,000,000 in the last quarter , of a century for educational purposes, •( and yet there is now law providing for juvenile reformatories in every county. This county has spent about $1,000,000 on its public schools, and has bad a reformatory for some years. The principal keeper reports that 803 of the 2,225 criminals in bis charge are 21 years of age and under; and be also reports that of the entire 2.235 there are 1,035 who can read or write. We have laws against selling liquor or cigarettes to minors, or allowing minors to gamble, and there is an outcry for ‘‘curfew,’ laws to keep in at night. The children seem to be getting beyond control, for the cry for these laws evidently comes from par ents. The public school system was to make children good, but it does not seem to have that effect. The fault is not with our school officials, for as already stated, they are active and zealous, and I, think the great bulk of them hardly deserve the een sure of being tinctured with **a spirit of unbelief.” Most of them are, doubtless, church members. The , fault is system itself. You can not take the tender mind of a child 1 away from the parent and commit it ' to the charge of a public functionary, 1 and expect any good to come of it. i You cannot ignore God in education, ( and look for a blessing.
