FLOYD’S PIKE ROADS Splendid Work Being Done on Calhoun Road By Convicts. WILL COIR INTO WHITER QUARTERS 'Takes From Four to six Weeks to Build a Mil* of Pike—Floyd’s Roads Have Made Her Famous. Floyd’s county convicts will be moved In near the city limits to go in to winter quarters between now and the that of the year. The camps are at present on the Calhoun road six miles from the city, where some magnificent pike has been built. Several miles of old mac -adamized road has been put In 'thorough repair, and two miles of beau tiful new road built. Three more miles of pike will be built, but this work will not be finished until some time in the spring. Superintendent Rhodes Hackney was seen by a Tribune reporter re cently, and said: ** We have progressed most favora bly on the Calhoun road, considering that we had some heavy grading to do. There were several steep hills which had to be cut down, It takes from four to six weeks to thoroughly macadamize a mile of road. Os course, circumstances of grading, convenience of material, number of handstand such things must be taken into consideration. “At present we have 62 people in the chaingang, Five are women, one or two cripples, and two or three boys, which brings, our available road working force down to about 52 \ands. We are using limestone rock <1 the Calhoun road. If I had a bavy steel roller it wouid be a great hip in cementing the pike and mak iq> it smooth at once. As it 'is the pasage of vehicles must grind the stcne into its ultimate smooth and eigitly appearance. These roads at firs are rough and are not pleasant to travel over. The health of our • catty is excellent, and the convicts all apptar contented. ” Piobably Floyd’s magnificent pikes hav< done more to advertise the county all over the country than any other one thing. The work of mak ing every principal public highway leading out of Rome, and radiating in to every part of the county has been going steadily on for several years. Floyd uses her own convicts in that manner and rents those from several other counties in North Georgia. It is proposed next year to build .a magnificent macadamized road from Rome to Cave Spring, and as nearly in a straight line as possible. This will be of vast benefit to Cave Spring, Rome and the entervening territory. A number of new iron bridges will be built over Floyd streams. One is nowunder construction over Silver ■ Creek between Lytles and East Rome. RELIEF IN SIX HOURS. Petit Larceny Not Woman’s Sin Alone. The story comes from England of a novel being found in the strong room of a firm of publishers written entirely upon the note paper of a London club. The thing is significant for two reasons: First, because the novelist was a man, and, second, because petty larceny has long been supposed to be the prerogative of woman. It is a fact that, in this country at least, it is women who pilfer the detachable privileges to be found in railway stations, the waiting room of department stores, hotels and like places. It has been found necessary to chain Bibles themselves. It isn’t so very long ago that when a woman arose to read her bulky extemporaneous address at the meeting of a certain woman’s ■club, her listeners, upon the back of each sheet of manuscript, could descry the sign and seal of a well known hotel. This wasn’t so bad, of course, as a whole book, but it was bad enough.— Philadelphia Times. I could never exactly understand how he came to be placed on Jackson’s staff, because he was a dreamer and had little of the practical about him. “I was not with Jackson, because I bad gone West for my health when Virginia seceded. My brother, however, was on bis staff, and my father was a director in the V. M. 1., where Gen. Jackson was a professor. Cook was a scholarly fellow, and even in his boy hood was devoted to books and literary pursuits. ” Mr. Winn is full of stories of those stirring time, and his memory for events of those four yean is marvelous. One of the prime essentials of health is clean liness. The first step in this direc tion is a clean skin. ’lbisftctis well known. Not only should the outside of the body be perfectly clean; but the interior of the body as well Clean teeth, clean mouth, throat, clean nasal pas sages, are all requisites of perfect health. The whole body, as well as every organ in the body, is lined with mucous membrane, which is even more liable than the skin to become very dirty. The most frequent cause of un clean mucous membrane is catarrh. Catarrh creates unnatural secretions, even though the catarrh be very slight In this condition good health is impos sible. Dr Hartman has made a specialty of treating chronic catarrh for nearly 40 years. His great remedy (Pe-ru-na) tas become known throughout the United States and Canada. It is certainly the best, and probably the only effective in ternal remedy for chronic catarrh. Its cures are permanent. The Doctor is also the author of many books on ohionic catarrh. It is generally supposed that the bones of the great reformer were torn from their last resting place in the church of the castle of Wittenberg dur ing the Thirty Years’ war and scattered to the winds, like those of Wyclif. At all events, no trace of Luther’s tomb has hitherto been discovered. One of the biographers of Luther, Herr Koest lin of Halle, has, however raised no little' sensation in religious circles in Germany by a recent article in a theo logical magazine which throws over the accepted explanation of the disappear- , ance of the reformer’s tomb as mere fic tion. He declares that two workmen engaged on the restoration of the church in Wittenberg castle came across the coffin and body of Luther without let ting any of their comrades know of i their find. It is alleged that they enter- ! ed the chapel by night and dug out the , remains, secretly reinterring them, in ' fear of arrest. There ought to be no difficulty in discovering whether there 1 is any truth in Herr Koestlin’s state ment.—Westminster Gazette. To Cure A Cold Jin One Day Take Laxative Bromo Quinine Tablets. The ways of trapping are as various as the ingenuity of savage or civilized man can devise. I like best the traps that one can make. They seem to give the animal a fairer show; they develop our own constructive faculties, and the , nearer we can get to the savage way the more fun it always is. titeel traps have a place that wooden traps can nev er fill, but give me something that I can make with my own hands, with the simplest tools, out of whatever materi als the spot affords where the animal lives. Os all the animals in this country there is none that affords less harmful sport than the rabbit—more properly hare—of which there are several spe cies. Its wonderful powers of increase | enable it to hold its own, as far too ' many of our best and most valuable animals do not. Furthermore, rabbits are very easily trapped. I Every one knows its little trail, as broad as one’s hand, through the bushes or broom sedge, or its footprints as it hops over the clear snow. Here, where the path goes under a fence rail, it has stopped to gnaw. The rabbit follows this path in season and out, though in the far north, where the snow keeps piling and piling up, its little road may change with each successive snowfall. Trappers there put out a large number of snares, setting them right in the mid dle of the paths.—Harper’s Round Ta ble. Small pill, safe pill, best pill. Paris, Dea L —Major Oonut Fernand Walrin Esterhazy, the retired French army officer who is charged with hav ing written the letter which led to. the' imprisonment on Devil’s island of Al fred Dreyfus, former captain of French artillery, who was convicted by court martial of selling military secrets to the agents of a foreign power, is said to have acknowledged the authenticity of the letters recently published by Figaro, with the exception of one, which is said to have expressed the following senti ments: "If tonight I were told that I should be killed tomorrow as captain of uhlans, while sabring Frenchmen, I should cer tainly be perfectly happy. L would not harm a dog, but I would see 100.000 Frenchmen killed with pleasure, ” It is understood that the report of General Pellieux, who was appointed to investigate the charges brought against Count Esterhazy, states that he is satis fied with the guilt of Dreyfus. However, there is general indignation here at General Pellieux’s statement, as he has not inquired into the possi bility of Esterhazy having written the memorandum upon which Dreyfus was convicted, which is one of the charges brought against the count, the general simply remarking that he considers that the oourtmartial definitely settled that point. ________ Lady Mlllata Is Blok.
