THE ROME TRIBUNE. THUUBDAY, DECEMBER y, 1897.
STUCK IN A BARREL.
Truant Officer Rescued a Man From a Pe
culiar Predicament.
While on a scouting expedition in the
First ward of Pittsburg recently in
rounding up truants W. E. Keller, the
truant officer," had an unusual experi
ence. He came across three men who
were amusing themselves with a quart
of whisky and an empty barrel. They
were carrying the barrel with one hand
and holdiqg it at arm’s length for the
drinks. The man who failed to perform
one of the feats with the barrel had to
pass the bottle around to the others, and
the man who was successful celebrated.
The event by treating the others out-of
the same bottle. They*kept this up un-'
til the hffops on the barrel began to be
duplicated. Then they stood it with
the open end up.
They fell to discussing some engross
ing question, and one of them, whose
legs began to wabble, attempted to take
a seat on the barrel. He sat down much
farther than he had intended. Only his
feet arid his head were left sticking out.
The others went to his rescue, but the
more they pulled and tugged the deeper
he got into the barrel. Tired out, they
stopped to devise a plan to get him out
without breaking the bottle, which he
had in his pocket. His friends reached
the conclusion that the best thing they
could do was to roll the barrel to a ma
chine shop and get the advice of a
mechanic. They started, and at every
turn it would bring the head of the im
prisoned man in contact with the pave
ment in a stunning wuy. He was howl
ing and bleeding when Mr. Keller went
to his aid. --
Mr. Keller got the head of the man
in the barrel between the feet sticking
out of it and worked the body as the
tight cork in a bottle is worked. After
a few minutes’ twisting and turning,
during which the two others stood by
cautioning him to be careful of the bot
tle of whisky, Mr. Keller felt an easing
up. Then he gave a strong pull and
nearly landed the man in the middle of
the street, but away from the barrel.
The two others ran to him, and before
he could got from the ground each had
a hand in his inside coat pocket.
“It’s safe!” shouted both joyfully.
Then they took another drink and
reprimanded the man who had been in
the barrel for his carelessness.—Pitts

Hood’s Sarsaparilla. ■ 8A I are
Merit in medicine means the power to
cure. Hood’s Sarsaparilla possesses actual
and unequalled curative power and there
fore it has true merit. When you buy
Hood’s Sarsaparilla, and take it according
to directions, to purify your blood, or
cure any of the many blood diseases, you
are morally certain to receive benefit.
The power to cure is there. You are not
trying an experiment. It will make your
blood pure, rich and n6urishing, and thus
drive out the germs of disease, strengthen
the nerves and build up the whole system.
