THE
Much Speculation Is to Who Will Re"
celve Appointments .
HON. JAKE MOORE SHOULD BE ONE
Gov. Atkinson Denies That He Has Ten
dered Judge Turner and Commis
sioner Nesbitt Places.
Since tbe final adjustment of the
convict bill, there is much speculation
abroad as to who the three commis
sioners will be which the bill provides
for.
The p?ople of Floyd, and in fact all
over Georgia, would be glad to see
Hon. Jake C. Moore given one of
these places. He is well qualified for
the place, and Gov. Atkinson could
not find a better man.
An Atlanta dispatch says:
“Gov. Atkinson has tendered places
on the penitentiary commission to
principal Keeper J. 8. Turner and
Commissioner of Agriculture R. T.
Nesbitt, To the great surprise of
everyone, Mr. Nesbitt declined the
post, as he wishes to run again for
present office. Mr. Turner will ac
cept, and will doubtless be chairmain
of the commission. There are more
than 100 applicants for the three
places, which pay <2,000 per year
each.’’
But this publication is perhap pre
mature, for the governor denies it.
Yesterdayis Constitution says:
Governor Atkinson denies that he
has tendered the pbsition of state pen
itentiary commissioners to R. T. Nes
bitt and Judge Turner, as published
yesterday afternoon.
“I wish you would state,” said he
last night, “that the report is abso
lutely untrue. The bill has not passed
and I have made no such appoint
ments. I shall not act until the bill
becomes a law. ”
It is generally conceded that Judge
Turner will be one of the commission
ers, but it is not known just when the
appointment will be made.
It is the concessus of opinion that
Judge Turner will be one of the com
mLsioners. The Atlanta Commercial
contains the following interesting gos ip
about the matter:
The action of the general assembly in
creating a prison commission has h::d
the effect of stimulating the political
market, and every section of the state
has a man groomed for tbe place.
Governor Atkinson has given no in
timatiou as to who he would appoint, as
that wpuid not be the proper thing for
him to do before the final settlement of
the convict question, even though he had
settled on the man in his own mind.
Becau e of the close political, friendly
and official relations of the goveinor and
the present principal keeper of the peni
tentiury, Judge J. S. Turner, the talk
has been current for sometime that he
would be put at the head of the commis
sion, and the appointment would be but
natuial under the circumstances.
The talk that makes Judge Turner
one of the commissioners also brings to
public notice the names of several promi
nent public men. Among these are Ex-
Gov. McDaniel, of Walton; Hon. James
W. Robertson, of Habersham; Cols.
Phil Byrd and Jake Moore, of Floyd;
Judge Samp Harris of Carroll; Editor
Dougla's Glessner, of Griffin, and Ex-
Treasurer J. W. Renfroe, who has a
great deal of experience in the manage
ment of convicts.
Other names will be mentioned in
connection with these appointments
until they are made.

Rumor That Speaker Hut Jenkins Will

A rumor set current in Atlanta by the
Evening Commercial, is to the effect that
Speaker Hut A. Jenkins will be in the
race for the governorship. That paper
said Thursday evening:
“I have said that I would announce

my intention to run or not to run before
the close of this session, but I don’t
know whether I ought to bring politics
into my position in any way. I think
now, however, that I will announce my
intentions as to the race for the govern
orship.
“I cannot say now whether I will run
or not,” and with these words the intsr
view closed.
There is a general belief that the
speaker will announce himself in the
gubernatorial ring. The fact that
Pope Brown said that he wouldn't
run has probably strengthened Speaker
Jenkins in his determination to shy his
castor into the ring.
Mr. Jenkins has made an able presid
ing officer, and when he lets fall toe
gravel tonight and announces the house
adjourned, he can go away with the
assurance that every member of that
body respects him for his fairness and
great ability.
The Commercial said sometime ago
that Seaker Jenkins would be in the
race. This prognostication will doubt
less be verified.

SHERIFF SAID TO BE SHORT.
State Examiner Furlfoy Make* a Bonea
tlnnal Report to the Governor.
Montgomery, Ala., Dec. 17.—State
Examiner Purifoy has reported to the
governor that on investigation of tiio
affairs of the office of the former sheriff,
W. B. Gibson of Lee county, it devel
oped that the ex-official was delinquent
to the state $1,781 with interest. The
report develop 4 some facts of a sensa
tional character. It says:
“The excesses noted embrace days
collected for which are shown in the
sheriff’s paid feed accounts to have been
prior to commitment or after discharge
from jail. I note especially two who
have been convicted and sentenced to
hard labor for the county, where the
sheriff continued to collect fees from
the state treasury for feeding them a
month each after they had left the jail,
and two other cases in which forfeit
ures against defendants’ bail were taken
when the sheriff’s feed accounts paid by
the state show that he has collected
fees for feeding such prisoners for con
tinuous periods before and after the
date of such forfeitures. It was a pretty
common thing for the sheriff to collect
fees for feeding prisoners after they had
been let out on bond or their cases had
been disposed of in court and the pris
oners discharged.”
The examiner reports that the former
sheriff left meager records of his ac
counts; that he left no books with copy
of feed accounts, etc., as required by
law; that the jail register had been in
correctly kept, and that no satisfactory
information could be obtained from any
of the ex-sheriff’s records.
