POLITICAL GOSSIP
S&td'JuY That Mrs. J»hn Mill dge
Will Be Assistant Librarian.
SHE ISWIFE OF , FORMER LIBRARIAN
Governor Atkinson Deni- • That There la
Any Political Deal .Between He
and Attorney General Terrell.
State Librarian Brown will make the
appointment of assistant librarian next
week, says the Atlanta Commercial.
A well supported rumor says that
Mrs. John Milledge, wife of Capt.
Milledge, the former librarian, will re
ceive the appointment.
The petition from the friends of Mrs.
and Capt. Milledge from over the state
has no doubt had great influence over
Librarian Brown. It is not doubted that
she will receive the appointment.
It is said that Captain Melledge’s
business investments have been bad,
and it is for this reason that his friends
have asked for the place of assistant
librarian for Mrs. Milledge, who is well
qualified to fill it.
While the press of the state has al
most unanimously rendered up service
in favor of Miss Edna Cain’s candidacy
for this place, and while she has had
tunerous other endorsements, Mr.
Brown, it is said, has determined, that
it would be more nearly compatible with
justice and right and public sentiment
to give the place to Mrs. Milledge than
to any of the other thirty applicants.
Mr. Brown says that he never fought
Capt, Milledge when an applicant for the
place of librarian, and would be glad to
favor him, though he has not announced
the name of the person whom he will
appoint.
Mr. Brown denies the story that was
afloat some time ago that John P. At
kinson, son of Governor Atkinson,
would be appointed as assistant libra
rian to carry out a promise made to the
Governor by Mr. Brown before he was
made librarian.
Two Denials.
The Constitution of Sunday con
tained an article charging that Gov.
Atkinson and Attorney General Ter
rell had joined forces—Atkinson to
work for Atkinson for United States
senator to succeed Bacon.
Concerning this Governor Atkinson
Baid this morning:
“I presume the Constitution
thought that publication would boom
their candidate for governor. As I
have stated before lam not running
for any office, until four or five years,
at least. ’ ’
Governor Atkinson referred to
Colonel Candler when he mentioned
‘‘the Constitution’s candidate. ”
As for the last sentence of his inter
view, it may mean that he will try
for Clay’s seat in the senate instead of
Bacon's.
Attorney General Terrell said con
cerning the publication in the Con
stitution:
“If the governor has not been both
ered by the rest of the citizens of
Georgia about the prison commission
ers than he has been bothered by me
he has had no one to mention the
matter to him. ”

Knoxville, Dec. JI. —Mahala Mul
lins, the famous moonshiner woman of
Hancock county, has given birth tc
four boys, all of whom are alive. Ma
hala’s husband is an invalid, weighing
less than 100 pounds, while she weighs
about 690.
Mrs. Mullins has sold moonshine
whisky for several years in safe de
fiance of the officers. Many a warrant
has been issued for her arrest, and
many a marshal has been sent to hei
rude mountain cabin to capture her.
She is an illiterate woman, but shrewd
and capable, and with a flue American
sense of humor. She settles hersel*
back in the great chair, which has been
constructed for her, and says: “Ab
right; I am ready to go; take me.”
The offii er gives one look at the
breadth of her 690 pounds and another
at the narrowness of the door. His war
rant does not provide for removing tin
side of the cabin, and so the woman i>
left to carry on her moonshine busmen
in peace.

SCHOOL TERM INCREASED.
Public Will Get One Hundred and Thirty
Days Next Year.
Hereafter tbe public school term in
Georgia will be one hundred and thhy
days.
The state board of education met in
State School Commissioner Glenn’s
office this morning and increased the
school term for which the state pays
from 100 to 130 days.
This increase in the number of
school days in the result of the in
crease in tbe school fund made by the
last legislature. The increase was
from $600,000 to $1,000,000, says the
Atlanta Commercial.
This puts Georgia high up among
the states of the Union in the matte r
of education. It is what the present
school commissioner has been work
lug for some time.
The various county boards of the
state are allowed the privilege of say
ing at what date the school term shall
commence. In most counties there
will be two terms—one in the first foi r
months in the year and the other in
the fall. /

* Brother* Accused of Murder.
Bristol, Tenn., Dec. 21.—John and I
Walter Marks, brothers, have been ar- •
rested on the charge of murdering Mrs.
Rebecca Carlton, aged 80. and a woman
of property, who was found dead in her
home near here ten days ago. John
Marks was a son-in-law of Mrs. Carl
ton, and she made a will leaving her
.property to his daughter. The theory
of the prosecution is that fear of a
change in the will prompted the mur
der. The only evidence against the
prisoners is circumstantial.

COLD SPRINGS SELECTED-
The Government Fish Hatchery Has
Been Loca ed at That Place,
The new government fish hatchery
which Roma’'wanted has been located
at Cold Springs. The Columbus En
quirer-bun says:
Capt. W. H. Benton, the civil engin
eer representing the Government Fish
Commission, will leave for Washington
today.
‘Capt. Benton has been at Warm
Springs for some time, engaged in sur
veying a location for the new govern
ment fish hatchery, to be located at
Cold Springs. He has completed his
surveys, and will carry the necessary
maps and estimates to Washington with
him. The fish hatchery will cover about
fifteen acres of ground, on the property
of Bullock, Bussey & Co. The engineers
representing the fish commission ex
amined a great many springs in the
state, but found nothing to equal the
location selected at Cold Springs. The
flow of water is abundant, the tempera
ture is just right, and the water clear,
free stone. Capt. Benton is delighted
with the location and tbe new hatchery
is expected to be one of the most success
ful ones owned by the government.
Upon Capt. Benton’s return to Wash
ington, a commission will no doubt take
immediate steps to let out the contract
for the hatchery, in order that it may be
put in operation as soon as possible.
