EXTENSION LIKELY
Story of C, R. &S- Extension Revived
By the Culumbus Enquirer-Son.
MR. KIOX OF THE ROW TALKS
It la Believed That the Road May Be
Built From Carrolton to Columbus.
The Advantages of Such a Moye.
Among the visitors to Columbus
yesterday was Mr. H. O. Knox, trav
eling freight and passenger agent of
the Chattanooga Rome aud Southern
railroad, with headquarters at Chat
tanooga, says the Enquirer-Sun of
last Sunday.
The visit of Mr. Knox to Columbus,
was somewhat significant. While in
the city he called upon a number of
prominent bankers, and other leading
business men. His object was to get
the views of these gentlemen on the
projected extension of his road from
Carrollton to Columbus. Not long
ago the Enquirer-Sun published a
story concerning tbe proposed exten
sion, which was read with interest by
the business men of Columbus at the
time. Mr. Knox received a great deal
of encouragement yesterday. Every
business man upon whom he called
expressed tbe earnest hope that tbe
road might be extended to Columbus
at an early date. By this extension
the Chattanooga Rome and Southern
would make a most valuable connec
tion with tbe Georgia and Alabama
road for Florida, Savannah and Mont
gomery.
The new line would greatly shorten
the distance between Chattanooga
and these points, and would give both
of these roads a great advantage over
any other line for getting, tbe busi
ness from tbe west to Florida points.
Mr. Knox will make a very favorable
report to Capt. Wilburn, the presi
dent of tbe Chattanooga, Rome and
Southern, and that a gentleman will
soon visit NewJYork for the purpose of
placing tbe matter before Simon B >rg,
the chief owner of the road, which, it
will be rembered, was recently pur
chased by the bond holders and reor
ganized. An issue of bonds bearing
a very low rate of interest has already
been authorized, and if tbe owners of
the company should decide to make
tbe extension, they will easily com
mand all the money needed for the
purpose. Tbe owners of the Chatta
nooga, Rome and Southern road and
tbe owners of the Georgia and Ala
bama road are on the very best terms
and are associated together In numer
ous business enterprises. If the ex
tension should be made, there is every
reason for the belief that the two
roads f would (.soon be united under
the same managenent In this event,
the new company would own one of
the most important and valuable rail
road properties in tbe entire south.
There is hardly any need to say that
the proposed extension would greatly
benefit Columbus. It would give this
city a new and competitive line and in
ci ease her importance as a railroad and
commercial center.
The Enquirer Sun will keep its read
ers posted on the proposed extension.
The result of the visit of President Wil
burn to New Yoik will be awaited with
no litt'e interest. It will no doubt be
followed by the announcement that the
extension will be made at a very early
date.
Before leaving Columbus, Mr. Knox
received letters endorsing the proposed
extension from sixteen of the leading
business men of the city, representing a
capital of more than three millions dol
lars. These letters will be turned over
to President Wilburn, who will carry
them to New York with him. The busi
ness men of Columbus would certainly
give the Chattanooga, Rome and South
ern a most cordial welcome to this city.

But Th re are Others Who Have Not Re

The ladies met at St. Peter’s rectory
yesterday to distribute the Christmas
stockings to be giveu to tbe children
ou Christmas morning and although
about 65 children were provided for,
there as many more whose mothers
have been promised filled stockings
for their little ones who will not have
such Christinas happiness unless
Rome’s generous people give them.
It is only necessary to mention this
fact for a liberal response. Do not
let the poor anxious mothers be dis

brotherly love.
Not only toys, apples,

How to Prevent Pneumonia.
At this time of the year a cold is very
easily contracted, and if left to run its
course without the aid of some reliable
cough medicine is liable to result in that
dread disease, pneumonia. We know of
no better remedy to cure a cough or cold
than Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy.
We have used it quite extensively and
it has always given entire satisfaction.
—Olagah, Ind. Ter. Chief.
This is the only remedy that is known
to be a certain preventive of pneumonia.
Among the many thousands who have
used it for colds and la grippe, we have
never yet learned of a single case having
resulted in pneumonia. Persons who
have weak lungs or have reason to fear
an attack of pneumonia, should keep
the remedy at band. The 25 and 50
