athletic Center.
Fine Sporting Ground, to be Built at
Piedmont Park.
Atlanta, Dec. 24.—The next annual
track meet of tbe Southern Intercol
legiate Association, which is the most
important athletic meet of the year in
the South, may be held in Atlanta.
Dr. C. F. Herty, secretary and
treasurer of the association, came to
Atlanta yesterday to make arrange
ments for bringing the big meet here,
and yesterday afternoon he iuaugu
rated a movement which he thinks
will not only result in bringing the
track meet to Atlanta, but will give
tbe city the finest athletic grpunds in
the country.
The Exposition Park. Amusement
Company Will, in all likelihood, build
a grandstand at tbe race track and fix
the grounds inside the track for foot
ball. baseball and other athletic
sports. Mr. Herty was accompanied
yesterday by'Mr. Tichenor, manager
of the university field day and.track
athletics, and Prof. Wood, of the
technological school.
These gentlemen called on the of
ficials of tbe Exposition Park Amuse
ment Company and made a very good
offer. Mr. Tichenor offered to bring
all of the university baseball games to
Atlanta if the grounds were prepared
and Mr. Cothran Agreed to bold the
annual field day sports here. The
plan proposed by the athletic people
is that tbe exposition company pre
pare the grounds and build a grand
stand and then they will have all
athletic sports of interest to occur
here.
Heretofore the annual track meets
have been held in Nashville. This
was very inconvenient to nearly all of
the seventeen colleges represented in
tbe association;—the distance being
so great that it was very costly to
send teams to that city. What is
wanted by the association is a more
central point. Atlanta is the most
central point and the only objection
urged is that we have not suitable
grounds here. Two weeks ago when
the matter came for discussion at the
association meeting in Birmingham.
Mr. Herty moved to hold the meet
here. The representatives of Auburn,
Mercer, state university and several
other colleges advocated this. New
Orleans, Nashville and Birmingham
objected because all those cities want
tbe meet. The association as a ma
jority favors meeting in Atlanta, but
they do' not propose to meet here un
less they have good grounds.

A NOBLE WORK.
154 Pain of Stockings Filled and Dis
tributed Among tbe Poor.
There will be few, if any, homes in
Rome to which the Christmas brings no
happiness or substantial comforts.
Through the efforts of Mrs. C. B.
Hudgins, of St. Peter’s Episcopal church,
154 pairs of stockings, filled to overflow-,
ing with nuts, fruits, candies and toys
were among the poor and
worthy people in Rome, East Rome and
North Rome yesterday afternoon.
Ladies in each ward of the city in
vestigated all the homes where there
were children under the age of 13 years,
and this morning they will wake up to
find that Santa Claus has not forgetten
them.
It is a noble work these ladies have
done, and the people have made liber .1
response to tneir appeals for Christmas
stockings.

CHRISTMAS IN ROME
Pansy Cha el Christmas Tree at the
Court House Last Night.
IS WAS CERTAINLY A HAPPY OCCASION
Saloons Will Be Closrd Today—Many
Family Reunions--Big Rush of
Christmas Eve Shoppers.
The superior court last evening was
ablaze with light, and life and joy.
Every face in the crowded room shone
with happiness.
•It was Pansy chapel Christmas
tree, and never was there a brighter
or happier occasion.
Three large trees stood just within
the.railing and from every limb hung
presents (or the Pansy chapel Sun
day school children, and on tables
heaped high were great rosy cheeked
apples, and beautiful golden oranges.
And such a scene of complete hap
piness! Mr. Samuel Funkhouser,
who has so nobly taken up the work
at Pansy chapel, Mrs. Lottie George
Bell, who has labored so faithfully
for the success of the tree, Mrs. Jack,
who presided at the organ, all of the
teachers of the school, were there just
too happy because they were glad
dening the ’lives of these patient,
hard working to whom
it was tbe eventjwhed'andlongedtfor
mahy 'months.
And Rev. S. R. Belk was there too,
his great form towering over tbe oth
ers, and bis face radiant with smiles.
It was a scene good to look upon.
There was a number of beautiful
hymns sung by tbe entire school, and
some *by the larger girls, and then
the very small ones sang sweetly, all
showing careful training..
Then a lot of appropriate recitations
were pleasingly rendered by both boys
and girls. After awhile Mr. Funk
houser got up, or rather be walked
forward, and made a very neat little
speech to the young folks. He told
them that should a single one be over*
looked in tbe distribution of presents
that it would not be intentional, but
simply failure on the part of tbeteaoh
ers to secure every name. Anyone
who failed to get anything would only
have to notify their teacher and a
present would be forthcoming, as
there were plenty in reserve for such
an emergency.
Dr. Belk, in his big, hearty, cheery
voice, announced that some books
would be distributed to those who had
memorized as many as one hundred
verses in the Bible. Those who re
ceived books were:
Eunice Maxwell, who memorized 150
verses. *
Mattie Arwood, who memorized 211
verses.
Orie Poole, who memorized 121
verses.
May Camp, who memorized 103
verses.
Eunice Arwood and Jessie Day receiv
ed books for punctuality.
Then the crowning part of the ever*
ing’s treat came, the distribution of the
presents. Messrs. Ruger George and
Littell Funkhouser took the prefen’s
from the trees, and Mr. Funkhouser call
ed out names. There were dolls and
handkerchiefs for the girls, and knives
and other things fordfcthe boys, And
every boy and girl received a bag of nuts,
a bag of candy, an orange and an apple.
Some more hymns wound up a never
to be forgotten event.
Tbe Rash of Shoppers. ,
There was a holiday crowd abroad yes
terday, And such a crowd ! From
earliest morning until long after night’s
shadows had encompassed the earth the
streets were literally wjth people.
One peculiarity of crowd
was noticable in that” during the early
morning and up to about! o’clock the
most of the people were on the | western
side of Broad street, and up to ffark on
Christmas.

the coldest days of the year. Last night
the crowds were pretty evenly distribut

use of firework* below Fourth avenue.
The merchants had a busy day 6f ’it,

Today will be an orderly one in Rome
The saloons will all be closed tight, and

police force has been increased by the
addition of three men, and order will be
preserved. There were a good many
arrests yesterday and last night. The
unfortunates were all overloaded with
too much holiday cheer. .

hour.
The popping of fire crackers and can
