FOR A SPIDER'S BITE. $
Mils Marie Celeste Ayer Is Paid per Ac
cident Claim.
The United States Casualty com
pany paid the claim‘■■of Mijs Marie
•Celeste Ayer yesterday.
Thea claim was believed by her
friends to be a most just one, and the
action of the company will beap
plauded by them.]
It will be remembered that last
summer while Miss .Celeste Ayer was
in a Pullman palace car on the
Seaboard 'Air Line en route to
Europe she was bitten on her right
cheek by a spider, or some poisonous
insect. She had some medical atten
tion given it in New York, but on
board the steamer her face became
swollen to a mammoth size. The most
skilful-surgeons of the ship, of Edin
burg and later of Heidelburg gave
their attention. So well did they do
their [work that only a slight pimple
remains on her cheek now. After the
lancing, electricity was used to raise
the sunken cheek. She took out an
accidentjpolicy before leaving from
Capt. A. W. Ledbetter, the Rome
representative of the United States
Casualty' company, to insure her
against any accident.
On her return she made olafm againt
the company for an amount sufficient
to cover the bills for medical atten
tion. The company refused to pay
the amount and suit was entered in
the courts. A special agent of the
company came to Rome recently and
as soon as he investigated the merits
of the case he ordered it paid. This
has been done,
The friends of Mtss Ayer who is one
of the most beautiful girls in Georgia, or
the south for that matter, believe that if
she had sued the company for $5,000
she could have secured that amount—
certainly if before a jury of gallant
Georgians.

Another court house marriage occurred

The contracting parties were George
P. Brooks and Miss Jessie Burke, two
young people belonging to well known
families in the Flatwoods district. They
were accompanied by a number of friends
and relatives.
The room of Ordinary John P. Davis
was used for the ceremony.
Justice of the Peace E. P. Treadaway
was sent for and about 2:30 p. m. arriv
ed and the ceremony wap solemnly per
formed.
Ordinary Davis and the other spect
ators congratulated the couple.
There were-no American Beauty roses
(sls per dozen) or diamonds used at the
wedding, but this couple will doubtless
live a happier life than riiany where such
extravagance is displayed.

THE ROME TRIBUNE. WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 29, 1897
MAYORALTY CONTEST
-’■ . ■ '.» W * jh r' ' *' <■
Nonius Citizens Urging Capt. TteHip
sod Hilf-s to Run. „
BE WILL MOST PROBABLY -CONSENT
Would Make Rome a Model Mayor, and
a Candidate JJpon Whom All the
People Could Unite.
It is getting time for the meyoralty
campaign to open,
The city of Rome will elect its next
mayor m< March, and there has been
much speculation as to ,who would be
candidates.
A well krown citizen discussing the
matter yest< rdiy said:
“The kind of a man we should select
for our next mayor should be one of high
character, who is respected by all classes,
and who will devote himself to the city’s
upbuilding by securing the location of
new industries and making known our
splendid resources. He should be a man
upon whom we ean unite, and who is
controlled by no clique or faction.”
Among those who have been promin
ently mentioned for the office of mayor
is Capt. Thompson Hiles, one of the
foremost of Rome’s progressive citizens,
and highly respected for business saga -
city and commercial integrity. A Tri*
bune reporter called to see Capt. Hiles
yesterday afternoon,' and asked him if he
would i announce himself as a candidate
for the mayoralty.
He replied that he had been urged
by his friends to enter the campaign,
and had about concluded to allow his
friends to announce that be would be
a candidate. If elected he said be
would give the mayor’s office his close
personal attention, and would ata'll
times work for the progress and ad
vancement of Rotne.
He said he thought that harinony
should prevail if joislble in municipal
campaigns, and if the people could
unite ’on him he saw no reason why
he should not become a candidate.
It is scarcely necessary for The
Tribune to say anything in commen
dation of Capt. Thompson Hiles. He
is well known as a representative of
the highest type of onr citizenship.
For four years he has been promi
nently identified with the municipal
affairs of Rome. First, as city assessor
and later as a member of the city
council. He has served for two years
past as mayor pro tern.
His hosts of friends believe that he
would make Rome a model mayor,
o The names of Judge Joel Branham
and Capt. J. J. Seay have been men
tioned, but it has been intimated that
they would not run if Captain Hiles
came ont. Neither gentlemen was in
when a Tribune man called to see
them yesterday.

DROWNED IN COOSA
Robert Ov rton Falls From a Covern
ment Boat Into the Stream.
BODY # HAS NOT BEEN RECOVERED
He Never Rose After Falllag Into Water.
Probably Drawn Under the Boat By
Suction—Search For Body.
The Coosa river claimed another
victim from drowning yesterday
morning.
Robert Overton, a negro man em
ployed on the government steamer
Leota, lost his life. >
The steamer is stationed at the
work on the Coosa river below Horse
leg shoals.
It seems that yesterday morning,
about 6:80 o’clock, Overton was en
gaged in passing some rope to a barge.
In some manner he lost his balance
and fell into the water. The suction
of the boat, or something else, carried
him und°r and? he was never seen
again.
Search was made for his body and
the river dragged, bat up to a-late
hour yesterday afternoon no news of
finding it bad been received. 1
Overton was about 26 years old and
balled from Lincoln, Ala., where Le
leaves a wife.
The search for the body will be con
tinued today.
SMALLPOX PATIENT.
He Has Been In the Pelt House One Month
and Is Cured.
Wiley Walker, the negro from Atlanta,
who was discovered here thirty days ago
with smallpox, has been cured and will
be released from the pestbouse today.
But he will skip out as soon as he is
given his liberty as there is a warrant out
for his arrest fdr a crime committed some
months ago.
Walker will be fumigated and given a
new suit of clothes, and everything he
has worn, and all the bedding .will be
burned. The pesthouse will be thorough
ly fumigated.
The guards, John Ware and John Ford,
will be discharged.
Dr. C. S. Harris, the city physician,
seems to have managed the case excel
lently and just as economicaily as he
cou’d. He says that Walker is quite
badly on hi? face on either side of his
nose.
None of the negroes quarantined with
Walker ever developed the slightest
symptom of the dreaded disease.
