IT IS HANDSOME. The New Court House and Its Rooms. THE OFFICERS ALL READY For the Opening of Court Tomorrow— History of the Building. Morday moining Judge Henry opened court in the handsome new building on F.fth avenue. Saturday around | the new templeoi justice was busy, and hundreds of peo ple on business or merely looking over the structure, made the building essuu e a lively appearance. As jon walk up the steps on the Fifth avenue entrance, the outside door on the left bears the word “Treasurer.” This ia the room that now belongs to Mr. Hill, but that gentleman cannot,of cout se, spend much of his time there. At pres ent it is occupied by School Commis sioner Bridges. Just inside to the light are the quarters of Tax Collector . . J. Black and T x Receiver McOsker. They bad everything in < ood shape yesterday. Opposite them is the cffice of Clerk Bey siegel. It is large and roomy and well furnished. He and his assistants, Walter Ross, Ben Howe and George Beysiegel, were all at their deeks and at work as if no move bad been made. The vault in the clerk’s < ffice contains a high table on which the books can be conveniently placed and read. All the large books are in roller shelves. Many steel draw ers are in use for papers. The ordinary’s office is on the other side nt xt to the tax collector and tax re ceiver. Ordinary Davis had a crowd around him yesterday, and transacted much business. His office is large and roomy. Nexr, at the end of the main hall is the city court room. The furniture for this has not yet arrived. The judge’s room and jury room is connected with it. To the left is a convenient little room in which Sheriff Jake Moore and Depu ties J. P. McConnell and Dailis Turner were hard at work all day. A bright carpet was being put down, a picture of the new court house was hung on the wall and a pretty basket of flowers adorned the centre table. They are proud of their pretty quarters, and are fixing them up in appropriate style. Up stairs the main body of the flocr is taken up by the superior court room. The furniture will be here in a few days, and will add much to the handsome ap pearance of the room. Temporary furni ture is already in place. The portion set apart for the bar w>U contain 150 chairs; in the audience portion will be over 400 opera either side to the rear are rooms for the judge, witnesses and jurors. The quarters of the commis sioners are just to the roar. In front is the grand jury room, the room of Solici tor Nunnally and the library. The two former are about the best located in the building. On the ground floor are rooms for the surveyor and school commissioner, a toilet apartment, the coal room steam boiler. This gives a plain idea of what the new ] ' building contair s, but does not tell of the handsome oak furniture and finishing. Everything is in. peif« ct (harmony, and the edKft is quite pretty. Ltch door bears in gilt letters the < ffice within. It is pretty now, but when all the furniture ordered is in place, the result will be one of the handsomest buildings as hand somely fitted up as any court house in the south. About the Building. The commissioners of roads and reve nue under whose supervision the struct ure was built are John C. Foster, chair man; W. A. Wright, W. S. Selman, H. M. Clayton and F. A. Glenn, to whom val uable assistance was rendered by Judge Max Mejerhardt, couaty attorney and secretary of the board. It has been two years since th< y started pushing the idea. An election on the bond question failed to get the number of votes if quirt'd by law, and they set to work to build it by direct tax. On Octo ber 10, 1891, the corner stone was laid in the presence of one of the largest gatherings ev<r seen in Rome. Bruce & Morgan of Atlanta, were the archi tects, and the Patton Manufacturing Co , was given the contract for the building, It was hoped to opeu the Sep'ember court in it, but s >me unavoidable delays threw the work behind. The cost of the building as given is: For lot, SIO,OOO For building, $50,000. For furni nre $5,000. For ex’ras SSOO. There are others, but you don’t want any of them; take our word for it, for when you need a plaster you need it and there is no time for experi menting and finding out mistakes then. About 5:15 yesterday afternoon Mrs. Scott came in with her four little chil dren, and they kissed their father through the bars. The children seemed very glad to see their father, and asked him why he stayed away so long. He talked to his wife awhile and then handed her over his earnings which he had saved while away. They amounted to five dollars. One of the little children exclaimed,“Papa’s got a heap of money.” He kissed them all good bye one more time and then they left.
