A SLICK TRICK
Gets Twenty-Four Hundred
Dollars From
SOUTHERN EXPRESS CO.
Agen D. E. Lowery and Others
Refuse to Talk But Here
is the Story.
Tha southern express office at this
place is out just $2,400.
And some smooth citizen, unknown to
this part of the country, is in just that
amount.
While just at present Mr. R. L. Jeu
nines, of Marshall, Texas, is here
awaiting photographs of himself and let
ters of identification to prove that the
$2,400 belongs to him.
In brief the story seems to amount to
just this: Mr. Jennings shipped the
money by exp-ess; somebody stole the
grip containing the express receipts and
•ertain letters, and arriving here ahead
of Mr. Jennings succeeded in getting the
money from the office here. Mr. Jen
nings has shown up, and there you are.
This's th ; way the story looks, and as
it stands now Mr. Jennings is at Mr.
Janes' boarding house opposite the Pres
byterian church, awaiting legal identifi
cation that he may get the money he
claims, while the express is hot in the
reach after the man who got the money.
The matter has been kept very quiet.
,It came to light Wednesday, but was
known by few. Yesterday it became gen
erally known in the city, but even
then those most interested would give
out little for publication. Howeve •, from
the best information that can be received
here is the story from
The Beginning;.
Mr. R. L. Jennings is editor and pro
prietor of the Morning Star in Marshall,
Texas, a town of 10,000 inhabitants. He
is also something • f a stock man, and an
admirer of the mild eyed Jersey. In this
way he came in communication wuh
■“VOknel Crook, of Jacksonville, Ala., a
gentleman well known as a raiser of fine
stock. The correspondence touched
upon some of the fine Jerseys owned by
Mr. T. F. Howell, es this city, whio >
Colonel Cook had authority to sell. The
culmination was that Mr. Jennings wrote
he would come over to look
lie
TAa^m^. thing known
last wet k ago of a man who said
he was Jennings. He had letters to
Jennings from Colonel Cook and other
papers, and had no difficulty as passing
off as such. He stopped at Mrs. Echols’
boarding house, and went out to look at
Mr. Howell’s cattle. He seemed much in
terested and talked as if he would make
a large purchase.
Monday morning he called at the ex
press office and asked if his money,s2,4oo,
had come. He was told it had.- He
asked for it, and as a means of identifica
tion produced the receipt for the amount
given at Marshall, and also many per
sonal letters, some es them dealing
with the proposed trade for Mr. How
ell’s stock.
The identification seemed complete,
and the money was delivered.
And he never came back.
That is all known of that Jennings, or
that man who said he was Jennings.
Then
Another Mr. Jennings
appeared on the scene. He arrived last
Tuesday night with Col. Crook, and
Wednesday met Mr. Howell and others
to whom he told bis business. He was
informed of the presence of the ether
man, tend the fact that he bad secured
the $2 400. Then it was the sensation
•pened, and it has been ever since. The
money was gone, and the man claiming
to be the right man was here.
“I want my money,” he said, but he
has not, secured it, and the tuau who did
get it is in a place that the express com
pany and others would like to know.
That’s the way the matter stands. Mr.
Jennings is now at the boarding house
of E H. Janes, opposite the Presbyterian
church, and is awaiting complete identi
fication. He has sent off for photographs
and other means of complete identifica
tion, while the express company is hunt
ing for the man who got the money. Mr.
Jennings wants his money, and the com
pany wants the other man and the money
too.
Keeping it Ouiet.

pressed, utterly refused to talk. Mr.
Howell also refused to talk for publica

requested not to talk.
A strong effort is being made to cap

who was talking to him on the train.

The principal business before the

came up after the lead ng < f the j urnal,
Mr. Rankin, of Gordon, made his motion
to reconsider and made a Bhort butfoice

several short speeches bit the principal
one against ri-coi sidei ation was by Mr.

the principle and the interest, bur. le

Wheu it c ime to a vote the friends of
the measure were iu rhe mnj >nty and
voted reconsideration down by a vote of
50 to 71. Mr. Flemmiug, when his name
was called, explained bis vote and in
doing so r<fl-cted the sentiments of a
pood mmy members. He said chat if he
believed there was any chance for re
consideration to mean the payment of
the principal and the interest be would
vote for reconsideration. He held that
both legally and in iqui y, the point
which was taken by those who onjeoted
to the payment of interest was not ten
able. He held that the point would hold
him in agreeing and that the state as a
sovereign could probable not be com
pelled to pay this inoasy, but he thought
that, as it Was iqatlvdiie. ttua atate ought
to Volunteer to pay it, aud if it did that
rhe legislature’s action would ba legal.
However, he voted against r< c msidera
tion because he felt that there was no
chance to get anything for the holders
of the bonds if the matter was recon
sidered and the fight prolonged.
The senate did nothing but read bills

Tnere is a very general opinion that there
ought to be a ch nge. Bo far as I can
find the depository system meets with
pret'y general favor as a sistem, but
every legislature brings a lot of bids
creating additional depositories and they
are passed until the number has increased
far beyond the intention of the origina
tors of the pian. Some people favor the
creation of some one solvent bank in
every county, others think that there
should be just a few in the principal cities
ard that the bond r< quired of them sbou d
be enough to cover the amount which
the depository might, during regular
order of business, at any time have in
their possession. The committee will
have no trouble whatever iu learning the
facts about the system and about the
treasury but may have trouble in finding
some successful, rational solution of the
problem.

TREADAWAY WON.
A Heated Election in North Rome Satur.
day.
North R ime was an excited suburb
yesterday, t he cause being the election of
a mayor and four aidermen.
For weeks rhe campaign has been
progressing, and it waged warmer as yes
terday grew near.
It wll be remembered that a mass
meeting was called by Mayor Hart, and
after a great amount of speech making it
broke up in confusion. Not before,
bow< ver.,E. P. Treadaway was nomina
ted for m yor, and four otners for coun
cilman. Qne faction claimed that the
uomina iou was not regular, and refused
io abide by it. Another mass meeting
was held, a id as this R v. W. M. Bridges j
was nominated for mayor, and four i
others f r councilmen.
This made two separate factions, one
headed by Treadaway at d the oti er by
Bridges Excrement ra . high, and it i
was hajd to guess at the possible win- I
tier. Ihe registration ran up to 175, the
highest it ever reached.
Yesterday ihe little city was all excite- '
meut, and all there aud a gre it many in
Rome wa’chcd the race with interest.
The result was the election of the full
Treaeaway ticket, by maj irides greater
than even rhe most sanguine followers of
this side expected.
