In Memorlam
“There is no death, the stars go down
To rise upon some fairer shore.”
As the lest Sabbath of the year drew
near its close, and the fast falling snow
was mantling the earth in its white
beauty, the sweet spirit of Miss Bessie
Cothran passed through the veiled porta 1
and entered thu bloused realm of her own
native heaven as life’s brief dream wore
away. Fur more than two years she bad
battled bravely, heroically with a dread
malady which in defiance of the deep
lovs and watchful care of parents and
kindred and friends, yielded her up to
death. So iong as had she lived beneath
the shadow of Azrael’s wings, that at
the last be had but to stretch out his re
lentless aim and his cold touch fell upon
her. Bue was on the verge of woman
hood, in the dawn of life’s glorious
morning in the hues of that beauty which
blooms upon the human form divine.
“When youth ite pride of beauty shows,
When fairer than spring the colors shine,
And sweeter ihan the opening rose.”
She bad just passed a happy Christmas
and by her cheerfulness had brightened
it for those around her. Ever unrepiu
ing, uncomplaining her thoughtfulness
was for others.
She will be missed among her young
companions and friends by whom she
was so well beloved, in her home of
which she was the idol, in the city where
her |saiuted life and early death, her
fortitude, her resignation and her faith
will remain a cherished memory.
For her death had no sting, over her
the grave achieved no victory. Her’#
was the triumph and the vioter’a
crown, as she obeyed the summons io
quit her happy earthly home for a fairer
one in a better land. As the “gate
beautiful” opened to receive her,
“Her spirit ascended the heavenly portal
And the mantie descending hath covered the
mortal.”

THE ROME TRIBUNE, THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 1895
BYARS AND MeLKOD
Were Successful Candidate# in the Bailiff
Bleetion Yesterday.
The successful candidates in yester
day’s bailiff election were Messrs. Marion
Byars and W. P. McLeod, who were re
elected.
The election was as exciting as that of
last Wednesday aud nearly as many votes
were polled, the total being 1067.
There were eight candidates in the
field, and, together with their friends,
they put in a hard day’s work.
The result was as follows: Bvars, 647;
McLeod, 600; Beard, 220; Carwile, 184;
Morgan, 111; Treadaway, 57; Elders, 17;
McGhee (lolored), 94.
Mr Byars and Mr. McLeod succeeded
themselves, Mr. Byars having been elect
ed last time and Mr. McLeod was ap
pointed by tbe court. Mr. Henry Beard
was a candidate for re-election, but was
defeated.
The successful candidates are two of
the most popular men in the county, and
a comparison of tbe votes cast yesterday
shows how well they stand in R >me.
They have made first-class officers, and
will continue to do the work to the sat
isfaction of the people
STOP THAT COUGH.
A Cough Medicine That Always Cure#
Permanently.
To stop a cough in any other way than
to check the secretions ia aa foolish as it
is harmful. The true cough medicine is
the one that cure# the congested #a#m
brauee, and thus stope the discharges,
when the oough ceases of ite own accord.
The cough medicine that has been
found always reliable to remove tbe
cause, end thu# stop the cough, is P#-ru
na. It contains no opium or narcotic of
any kind, and is a sure cure for all kind#
of cough. Pe-runa operates directly to
heal the congested or inflamed mucous
membrane of the air passages and lungs.
A tablespoonful before each meal and at
bed-time will cure a winter cough per
manently and quickly. Two ounces of
rook candy added to one bottle of Pe-ru
n& and taken as above is the best treat
ment in existence for a common cough,
the cough of consumption and chronic
bronchitis, according to the testimony
of the thousands of patients scattered all
over the length and breadth of tbe
United States.
A treatise on coughs, colds, chronic
catarrh, consumption, bronchitis, la
grippe and pleurisy will be sent free to
any address by The Pe-ru-na Drug Man
ufacturing Company, Columbus, Ohio.

The Old Time Singing School.
In the old colonial days -when the
great and the great-great-grandmothers
were young the singing school was a
well established institution, writes Mary
E. Estes in a very accurate article tell
ing exactly how "the old time concert”
may be reproduced at a church enter
tainment in Ladies’ Home Journal. It
was usually held in the village school
house, the schoolmaster often figuring
as the singing master. Thither at reg
ular intervals through the long winter
months tripped the grandmas with their
escorts. Little did they imagine as they
lifted up their sweet voices in unison
with the strong tenors and bassos that
those same airs, even the very gown#
they wore, would at tome distant day
be reproduced for the benefit of an ap
preciative audience. Yet it may be safe
ly asserted that with the exception of
the colonial tea the old folks’ concert
is the most popular of the old time en
tertainments.
The success of an undertaking of this
sort depends largely upon the adapta
bility for her office of the person hav
ing the affair in hand. Sho must of ne
cessity have an accurate conception o f
the manner in which these entertain
ments were conducted in onr grand
mothers’ day. She must also become
thoroughly imbued with the spirit of
hat olden time.

A good adveitiaement in swell

all possible salesmen. It is a sales-

his study, the lawyer in his office,

the MOST PERMANENT and INDEPEND

T
a GUARANTEE to the CUSTOMER of
fair and moderate prices. Experi
