Lowry
continued from page 6A
as Armin Rosen catalogues
in a disturbing report for
Tablet magazine.
The author, Steve Coll,
who is no less than the
dean of the Graduate
School of Journalism at
Columbia University, said
last December, “Those of
us in journalism have to
come to terms with the fact
that free speech, a principle
that we hold sacred, is
being weaponized against
the principles of
journalism.” The former
managing editor of Time
magazine, Richard Stengel,
has written: “All speech is
not equal. And where truth
cannot drive out lies, we
must add new guardrails.”
And so its erstwhile
champions are ready to
retreat from strict
adherence to the First
Amendment to a new rule
of “free speech for me, but
not for thee.”

Local congregation under new leadership
The Vidalia Ward of
The Church ofjesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints is un
der new leadership with
the sustaining of Harold
Fred Tippett, Jr., of Vidalia
as bishop on Jan. 10.
His counselors or as
sistants are Rusty Burns
and Jeff Russell, both of
Vidalia. Bishop Tippett re
places Bradley Young, also
of Vidalia, who had been
serving as bishop since
July 2015.
A bishop is the leader
of a local congregation
(known as a ward) with
duties similar to those of
a pastor, priest or rabbi. In
The Church ofjesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints, this
position is unpaid. Each
bishop is assisted by two
counselors. Together, this
bishopric oversees the
spiritual and social needs
of their ward members.
The bishop helps each
member of his congrega
tion in their efforts to fol
low Jesus Christ. In addi
tion to spiritual matters,
a bishop helps members
who are struggling finan
cially or in other ways
to become self-reliant
through welfare assis
tance. A bishop also over
sees practical matters such
as records, reports, financ
es and the meetinghouse
where members meet.
Bishops typically
serve for about five years.
They report to stake presi
dents (a stake is similar
to a diocese). These local
leaders have a significant
amount of local autonomy
to make decisions regard
ing the members in their
wards and stakes.

THINK OF ME FIRST AS A PERSON
BY; RITA DRANGINIS
You look at me with pity,
and snuggly dogs comforting.
concern or indifference,
I love the toys of childhood--
for I am a retarded child.
a kite, a balloon, a wagon to pull.
But you only see the outside me.
I like to let go at the top of a slide
If i could express myself,
and after dizzy seconds, find myself
I would tell you what I am inside.
at the bottom.
I like sleds on soft snow,
I am very much like you.
I feel pain and hunger.
the wetness of rain on my forehead.
I cannot ask politely
Though it is comfortable to be babied,
for a glass of water, but I know
I am less dependent
the parched dry feeling of thirst.
when people treat me as a big boy.
I itch when mosquitoes bite me
I don't want their sympathy.
and run when I see a bee.
I want their respect for what I can
I feel cozy drinking cocoa in the
do.
kitchen when a snowstorm blusters
I am slow, and many things
outside.
you take for granted are hard for me.
I can hardly understand
I had a heaviness inside
what "tomorrow" means.
when I left my mother
It took me months to learn
to board the minibus for school.
to pedal the tall blue tricycle,
My eyes darted back and forth,
but I was so proud when at last
seeking escape,
both feet pedaled in the same
but knowing there was none.
direction
When my sister takes me
and the wheels went forward.
to the playground
Flow happy I was
and children call me names.
when I turned on the right faucet
she cries and takes me home.
to get a drink of water.
Then I feel warm and dizzy,
I didn't want to ever turn it off.
and it is hard for me to breathe.
If I can learn at my own pace
Mother's eyes are wet; she holds me
and still be accepted,
and tells me a story, and
I can fit into a world
I forget the children's jeers.
When I dress myself and Mother
where slowness is suspect.
pats my head, saying, "Good Job, Jim!"
Think of me first as a person,
I feel...big. As big as Greg,
who hurts and loves and feels joy.
who goes to second grade.
And know I am a child to
encourage and direct.
I am a child—
Smile, and say Hello-—
in age now, and in ability always.
I find the touch of soft toys
even that is enough.
