It takes a thief with the right tools
approximately 90 seconds to separate
a catalytic converter from the under
side of a vehicle. The thief can sell the
converter to a scrap yard for $100
to $350, while it can cost the victim
$800 to $5,000 to replace it, depend
ing on their insurance coverage.

States automobile market. To comply
with the U.S. Environmental Protec
tion Agency's stricter regulation of
exhaust emissions, most gasoline-
powered vehicles starting with the
1975 model year are equipped with
catalytic converters.
There is a nationwide increase in
converter thefts. This trend is directly
attributable to an increase in the val
ue of the precious metals—platinum,
