The Lady Bulldogs
of Toombs County High

last week against Swains-

Effingham County on
Monday of this week.
The Bulldogs rolled over
Swainsboro, but errors
cost them in a loss to Eff
ingham.
vs. Swainsboro
Toombs got the scor
ing started in the top of
the first inning with
three runs. They added a
run in the top of the sec
ond inning, and one
more in the third to push
their lead to 5-0. Swains
boro got on the board in
the bottom of the third
inning with two runs to
close the lead to 5-2.
Toombs plated three
more in the top of the
fourth inning and then
got RBI’s from Nora
Grace Mercer, Autumn
Jarriel, and Ziahya Grif
fin to increase their lead
to 11-2. Toombs held in
the bottom of the frame
to take the win by the
run rule, 11-2.
Mercer and Griffin

On Monday of this
week the Bulldogs bat
tled with Effingham
County at home in a
close game that saw the
Lady Rebels take the
lead in the top of the fi
nal inning.
The Rebels got on
the board first with a run
in the top of the first in
ning to take the early
lead. They added to that
lead in the top of the
third inning with a drive
through the left side with
a runner on base. That
put them on top 2-0.
In the bottom of the
third, though, the Bull
dogs made a quick come
back. With Brinley Miller
on base, Arlie Gooden
hit a shot over the right-
center fence for a two-
run homerun to tie the
game at 2-2.
But in the top of the
fourth inning, two errors
led to a run for Effing
ham to give them back
the lead, 3-2. They added

Alexa Ledford picked
up a hit to get things go
ing for TCHS in the
fourth. She was followed
by a hit by Griffin that
put two runners on base.
Ledford came in to score
on a hit by Casey
Cantwell to close the
lead to 4-3. A passed ball
brought in Griffin to tie
the game at 4-4, and then
a sacrifice by Aniston
Powell gave Toombs the
lead, 5-4.
In the top of the fifth
inning the Rebels tied
the game at 5-5. Neither
team scored in the sixth
inning, but in the top of
the seventh inning Eff
ingham put two runs on
the board to go ahead,
7-5. They held Toombs
in the bottom of that fi
nal inning to take the 7-5
win over the Bulldogs.
Toombs was back in
action on Tuesday after
presstime as they hosted
Bacon County in a Re

a Region matchup on

The Robert Toombs
Christian Academy Cru
saders football team
opened up their season
against the Patriots of
Pinewood Christian at
home last Friday night.
The Crusaders had a tough
first game as they fell to the
rival Patriots 56-8.
Pinewood did stall on
their opening drive around
the RTCA 25-yard line,
and turned the ball over on
downs. RTCA used a fake
punt on fourth down of
their drive to throw a pass
from TJ Stanley to Jashaun
Powell for a first down out
to the 34-yard line. After
stalling again, RTCA went
for another fake punt, but
this time the ball was inter
cepted at the RTCA 35-
yard line with just over six
minutes left in the first
quarter.
Pinewood wasted no
time as they connected on
a 35-yard pass for a touch
down. They tacked on the
two-point conversion to
make it 8-0.
RTCA did get the ball
across midfield on their
next drive, but were forced
to punt the ball away after
being stopped by the Patri-

ots. Pinewood took over at
their 17-yard line. It took
two plays and a penalty to
get to midfield for Pine
wood, and then they hit a
50-yard pass to the end
zone. The ball was knocked
loose by Powell as they
were crossing the plane,
but Pinewood jumped on
it in the end zone for the
score with 16 seconds left
in the first quarter. They
added the two-point con
version to make it 16-0.
In the second quarter
Stanley went out with a
shoulder injury, and Clay
ton Meadows was forced
to step in at quarterback.
Just a few plays in a pass
was intercepted by the Pa
triots. Pinewood moved
the ball down the field and
again went in for a touch
down, this time from eight
yards out. It was 24-0 after
the two-point try.
Pinewood added two
more touchdowns before
the end of the first half to
take a 36-0 lead to the
locker rooms.
At the start of the second
half, Hayden Right did
have a nice 40-yard kickoff
return, but RTCA could
not get the offense going
and turned the ball over on
downs.
RTCA scored another
touchdown on a long run,
and added another on a
six-yard run to make it
50-0 in the third quarter.
Meadows came away
with an interception the
next time the Patriots had
the ball at the RTCA 24-
yard line. This time the of
fense moved the ball down
the field and got in for a
touchdown on an 11-yard
run by Tucker Heath. They
added the two-point try on
a pass from Meadows to
Powell, but that made the
score 50-8.
Pinewood added one
more touchdown to make
the final score of the game
56-8.
This week RTCA will
be at Thomas Jefferson
Academy on Friday at 7:30
p.m.
