Aftermath

player, who also had a wealth of pitch

In 1934, Dizzy,
who was born
in Lucas, Ark.,
90 miles south
of Fayetteville,
won 30 games
for the St. Louis
Cardinals, the
last pitcher in
the National
League to reach
that milestone.
He qualified as a
soothsayer.
After dominating Arkansas last Sat
urday 37-0, the Bulldogs are entitled to
a little bragging, but not when coached
by Kirby Smart. He knows it was total
dominance on the scoreboard and on
the field, but he knows there can be
pratfalls in the long season. The Razor-
backs won the toss and opted to kick
off which immediately confirmed who
the superior team was. The Bulldogs
marched 75 yards for a touchdown in
the most businesslike fashion that we
have seen between the hedges in some
time.
That sent a message to the opposing
team and to the college football world
that Georgia is one of the most domi
nant teams in the country, convincingly
worthy of its No. 2 ranking.
The coach passed out compliments
as he always does, but there was that
enduring caveat. “Don’t start thinking
you are great. Don’t inhale your success,
you could choke on it. Keep chopping
wood.”
Already with Bulldog fans making
reservations for the weekend of Jan. 10,
2022, in Indianapolis, Smart is singing
a “not so fast” tune. To be a great team,
you have to be mentally ready to play
every Saturday, no matter the opponent.
You must win the close games.
This week, for example, Kirby could
tell his team the story of the 1942 Geor
gia-Auburn game in Columbus. The
Bulldogs were nationally ranked, per
haps the best team in the country with
the second-best team, the Navy Pre-
Flight school three miles across town.
The Navy Pre-Flight School
whipped Auburn 41-14. The War Eagles
had a very mediocre year, 6-4-1—but
they defeated the Bulldogs, who had

emy hosted the Lions of St. Andrews
last Friday night for Homecoming.
The Crusaders kept it close but fell by
one score to the AAA team.
During halftime of the game the
Crusaders crowned their Homecom
ing Queen and Princess. The 2021
Homecoming Queen was senior Ellie
Graham. Senior Madison Williams
was named 2021 Homecoming Prin
cess.
RTCA had the ball to start the
game. They started at their own 20-
yard line after a touchback on the
opening kickoff. A penalty moved
RTCA out to the 35-yard line. But
they turned the ball over on downs at
their 43-yard line with just over nine
minutes to go in the first quarter.
Just a few plays later the Lions
broke free for 27 yards and a touch
down. They added the extra point to
lead 7-0 with 6:50 left in the opening
quarter.
The ensuing kickoff went off an
RTCA player and the Lions recovered
it at the 45-yard line. They quickly
worked the ball down to the 25 before
a penalty on the Crusaders put them
at the 17-yard line. With 3:43 left in
the first, the Lions scored for the sec
ond time. With the PAT, they were on
top 14-0.
RTCA started at their 14-yard
line on their next drive. They got out
to near midfield before fumbling the
ball, with the Lions recovering at the
RTCA 47-yard line. The Lions got to
the RTCA 29-yard line, but a loss and
a big penalty pushed them all the way
back out to the 44-yard line. Another
penalty and they were back to the 49
on the final play of the first quarter.
