Mr. Wendell Calhoun, Jr.
Paul Wendell Calhoun,
Jr., died Sunday, September
26, 2021, after a sudden
illness, surrounded by his
loving family
Wendell was born in
1937 in Vidalia, Georgia,
the oldest son of Ruth
Palmer Calhoun and Paul
W. Calhoun, Sr. He attend
ed Montgomery County
public schools except for a
brief period during WWII
when his father was sta
tioned in New York City.
Wendell excelled academi
cally even from a young
age, and that success car
ried over into college. He
attended .
University
of Georgia,
where he was
a member of
the Kappa
Alpha Order and earned a
degree in Chemistry, fol
lowed by University of
Georgia Law School, be
coming a “DoubleDawg.”
In between, he volunteered
to join the Army and
reached the rank of First
Lieutenant with the 101st
Airborne Division and sub
sequently being honorably
discharged.
One of his first legal
jobs out of law school was
working with Pan Ameri
can Airways in their legal
department. During that
time, he was living in Flori
da working at Cape Canav
eral but felt he was meant
for path one that was out
side city, ultimately decid
ing to come to Toombs
County to practice law
with the Hon. William
Darby in Vidalia, Georgia.
It’s here he developed his
love for the courtroom and
honed his trial skills. He
developed an outstanding
reputation as a trial attor
ney and used those skills
around the country repre
senting clients. He was a
lawyer’s lawyer. Wendell al
ways made time to mentor
younger lawyers when he
had the chance and loved
nothing more than to talk
law and did so quite fre
quently.
Wendell was an avid
outdoorsman and enjoyed
saltwater fishing, bird
hunting and flying. For a
period, he held the record
for largest sailfish caught in
Walker’s Cay, Bahamas. He
loved his Georgia Bulldogs
and would watch them
faithfully. He was a mem
ber of the Mt. Vernon Bap
tist Church.
Wendell was preceded
in death by his parents,
Paul W. Calhoun, Sr., and
Ruth Palmer Calhoun;
his brother, Patrick P. Cal
houn; his son, Christopher
A. Calhoun; and his wife,
Kathi M. Calhoun. He is
survived by his son, Charl
ton Calhoun and wife Tra
cy of Cumming, GA, and
sons Tyler and Conner;
son, Paul W. Calhoun III
and wife Hannah of Sop-
erton, GA; his niece, Cath
erine Douglas and Chris
topher Wilson (stepson);
along with several nieces,
nephews, and grandchil
dren.
The funeral service was
Friday, October 1, at 11:00
a.m., at Mt. Vernon Baptist
Church with Karl Hay of
ficiating. Burial followed
in Mt. Vernon Memorial
Cemetery with Military
Honors.

Howard Kaufold, Mitch

Mrs. Marilyn “La
verne” Cannon, age 68, of
Cobbtown, died on Sep
tember 26, 2021, after an
extended illness.
Mrs. Cannon was a
native of Toombs County
and lived in Cobbtown
the last 7 years. She previ
ously lived in Oak Island,
NC, for several years. She
retired from H&R Block
as a tax accountant and
recently was employed
as Cobbtown City Clerk.
She was a member of
Cobbtown Methodist
Church. She was preceded
in death by her husband,
William Cannon; 1 son,
Mathew Porter; her par
ents, Vernon and Lottie
Lockley; and 2 sisters,
Cynthia Martin and Deb
bie Manning.
Her family includes 2
sons, Jonathan Porter of
Winter Garden, FL, and
Chris Porter of Cobbtown;
2 brothers, Larry Lockley
and wife Selena of Lyons
and Jimmy Lockley of Leb
anon, TN; and 6 grandchil
dren, Mars, Raiden, Pey
ton, Sawyer, Korbin and
Konner.

Mr. Billy Beasley
Mr. Billy Beasley, age
83, of the Cedar Crossing
Community, died Friday,
October 1, 2021, at Me
morial Health Meadows
Hospital after a battle with
Covid. He was born in
Treutlen County, as a child
moved to Toombs County,
later to Florida, and re
turned to Toombs County,
living in Cedar Crossing
since 1965. Early in his
life, he worked with Fed
eral Pacific in Vidalia, and
founded Beasley’s Roofing
in 1969. He was a mem
ber of the Uvalda Church
of God, and he enjoyed
farming and spending time
with his family at Lake
Oconee. He is preceded in
death by a son, Billy Mor
ris “Buck” Beasley; parents,
Berry Morrison Beasley
and Lizzie Belle NeeSmith
Beasley; one sister, Bernice
Beasley; and four brothers,
Mark Beasley, C.A. Beas
ley, J.W. Beasley, and W.L.
Beasley.
His family includes
his wife of sixty-four years,
Joyce Beasley of Cedar
Crossing; six children,
Dwayne Beasley and wife
Angela of Vidalia, Barbara
Craft and husband Jrell of
Uvalda, Brenda Poole and
husband Jessie, Wanda
Carroll and husband Fate,

at 3:00 p.m. at the Uvalda
Church of God, with Pas

ing. Burial followed at the
Beasley Family Cemetery
with Bishop Gilbert Worn-
mack officiating.

Mr. Hugh Foskey
Mr. R. Hugh Foskey,
age 81, of Uvalda, died on
Friday, October 1, 2021, at
Select Specialty Hospital in
Savannah after a battle with
Covid.
Mr. Foskey was born in
Uvalda and was a lifelong
resident of Montgomery
County. He worked with
Globe Manufacturing and
Oxford Industries for many
years. After retirement, he
enjoyed gardening, sell
ing produce, and became
well known as the “Sweet
Potato Man” who drove
the red truck from Uvalda.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, Rufus and
Clyde Foskey; his wife,
Johnnie Foskey; and 5 sib
lings, Kendall Foskey, Paul
Foskey, Hollis Foskey, Elise
Davis, and Janelle Foskey
Williams.
His family includes 2
daughters, Debbie Thorn
ton and husband Wayne of
Hazlehurst and Janet Ad
ams and husband Bryant
of Uvalda; 1 sister, Reba
Yawn and husband Royce
of Clermont, FL; 3 grand
children, Paula Driskall
and husband Doug, Starla
Godwin and husband Dan

great-grandchildren; and

was held on Tuesday, Octo
ber 5, 2021, at 11:00 a.m.,
in the chapel of Ronald V.
Hall Funeral Home, with
Pastor Reese Mincey and
Rev. James Horton officiat
ing. Burial followed in the
Dead River Cemetery near
Uvalda.

Mr. Donald Moseley
Mr. Donald Ray Mose
ley, age 67, died on Sep
tember 18, 2021.
Mr. Moseley was born
in Lyons. He worked in the
oil industry for 48 years
and was currently a Field
Superintendent for South
west Operating. He was
preceded in death by his
father, Edward Moseley;
1 brother, Eddie Moseley;
his father-and mother-
in-law, Bruce and Bonita
Miles; and 1 sister-in-law,
Gayle DeFore.
Survivors include
his wife of 48 years, Ann
Moseley; his mother,
JoAnn Moseley; 1 son,
Donald Ray Moseley II
and wife Missy; 2 daugh
ters, Dana Moseley and
Cara Warren and husband
Chris; 2 sisters, Margaret
McCullough and Tammy
Moreno and husband Skip;
10 grandchildren; and 5
great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life
service will be held on
October 16, 2021, at 3:00
p.m., at Mt. Zion Baptist
Church in Lyons. All fam
ily and friends are invited
to attend. Burial was held
on September 23, 2021, in
Palestine, TX.

Mrs. Carolyn Moore
Blocker, age 82, of the
Kibbee Community, died
Wednesday, September 29,
2021, at Memorial Health
Meadows Hospital in Vida
lia after an extended illness.
She was preceded in death
by her parents, Jack D. and
Mary Eason Moore; a sis
ter, Joyce Wilkes; and by
two infant siblings, Linda
and Jack.
Carolyn was born in
1939 in Delray Beach, Flor
ida. She was a 1957 gradu
ate of Lyons High School,
graduating with honors.
Carolyn attended Brew-
ton-Parker College and
Georgia Teachers College,
currently Georgia South
ern. She previously worked
at Belk Mathews, was a
community events writer
for the Vidalia Advance,
worked for the Montgom
ery County Board of Edu
cation with Title 1, and
was a substitute teacher.
She was co-owner of T.A.
Blocker’s General Store
along with her husband
Gary. She spent the last sev
eral years as a homemaker.
Carolyn was talented at
making jewelry, which she
sold at Blocker’s, and was
talented at sewing for her
self and others. She spent
many hours making and
sending cards to those who
needed encouragement.
Carolyn was a true servant
of the Lord devoting her
time to teaching Sunday
School for many years,
leading G.A.’s for girls in
church and always serving
others using the talents and
abilities the Lord gave her.
She was passionate about
showing the love of Christ
to others and was a charter
member of Cornerstone
Baptist Church.
Carolyn is survived by
her husband of sixty-three
years, Gary Blocker; two
daughters, Jackie Rowe
and husband Terry, Angie
McKie and husband Mark;
a grandson, Stuart McKie
and wife Haley; a grand
daughter, Brooke McKie;
and three great-grandchil
dren, Asa, Ada, and Ayla
McKie; her sister Barbara
Findley and husband, Wil
liam; brother-in-law, Jim
Wilkes; brother, Donald
Moore and wife Vicki; sis
ter, Terri Moore and hus
band Mark Ricketts; sev
eral nieces and nephews.

3, at 3:00 p.m. at Lakeview

Mr. Jerry Wilkes
Mr. Jerry L. Wilkes,
age 87, Vidalia, died on
Thursday, September 30,
2021, at the Community
Hospice House in Vidalia
after an extended illness.
Mr. Wilkes was a native
of Oak Park, and he and his
family moved to Vidalia in
1943. In 1952, he enlisted
in the U.S. Navy where
he was a firefighter, and
served our country 4 years.
He worked
with Gulf Life
Insurance
Company for
several years,
later work
ing with Threlkeld Motor
Company, Chickasha Mo
bile Homes, and more re
cently worked with Shon-
ey’s in Vidalia as a night
auditor. He was Baptist by
faith. He was preceded in
death by 1 granddaughter,
Sasha Dyan Mixon; his par
ents, Wilder Jordan Wilkes
and Alma Price Wilkes; 4
brothers; and 1 sister.
His family includes his
wife of 63 years, Christine
Tapley Wilkes of Vida
lia; 2 children, Buck Ran
dall Wilkes of Ft. Pierce,
FL, and Cindy Mixon of
Lyons; 3 grandchildren,
Anthony Wilkes and wife
Megan of South Carolina,

home.
Mr. Bunton was born

ton, Sr., and Frances Sykes
Bunton.
Survivors include his
