COMMENTARY

CONTEXT
A compilation of quotations on a variety of
issues by national, state and regional writers,
well-known personalities, just plain everyday
people and from various publications
collected by the editors of THE ADVANCE.
Quotes for our Times:
Brian C. Joondeph, writer for American
Thinker: We Wish You an Un-Merry Christ
mas.
The federal government wants to
spend money it doesn't have which will
lead to too much money chasing too few
goods, exacerbating already the worst
inflation in 40 years.
Biden's vaccine mandates will grind
America to a halt, with pilots, law enforce
ment, first responders, healthcare provid
ers, and many essential workers saying no
to a forced vaccine, all in time for the up
coming holiday season. Instead of it "be
ginning to look a lot like Christmas" it is be
ginning to look like Cloward-Piven chaos,
with little hope for improvement.
David Ennocenti, writer for American
Thinker: Why Democrats' scheme to tax
unrealized capital gains should terrify
you.
What needs to be considered is this:
what exactly did those companies distrib
ute when they paid those cash dividends?
They paid them in worthless paper. Think
about it on a personal level. If you live in a
house worth $100,000 and it is reassessed
for $125,000, do you have $25,000 in cash
available to spend? Try writing a check
against that. Unfortunately, that is what
corporations were doing. Beyond that,
this is exactly what the Democrat plan is
for.
Leah Barkoukis, online features editor
at Townhall.com: Surgeon loses his job
after defending parents' right to decide
whether to mask kids.
Dr. Jeffrey Horak (surgeon in Minneso
ta) argued the decision to mask a child
should fall to the parents.
"Who does God put in charge of these
kids? Their parents. God gave each one
of these kids... to their parents and they
speak for them," he said during the meet
ing. "They may be wrong, they may be
dumb, they may be perfect in their deci
sions. But it's still their responsibility. It's not
yours. God gave it to them. Honor their
wishes, either side of the fence."
Greg Gutfeld, host of Gutfeld! and co
host of The Five: Democrats get into pow
er to exempt themselves from laws they
force on others.
As long as they're in power, they can
dance mask-less in public and eat in
a fancy restaurant while you're under
house arrest. S***, some can even marry
their brother!! That must've been a cozy
wedding. When they asked guests if they
were relatives of the bride or groom, they
all said "yes"! Talk about dysfunctional.
As Minneapolis gets worse, mentally
lll-han calls the cops dysfunctional. But
Omar calling anyone dysfunctional is like
me calling anyone drop-dead gorgeous.
Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
Or in this case the wife calling the brother,
"husband."

Is Trump’s Grip on
the GOP Weakening?
Republican politicians can
be forgiven for thinking that the
GOP is Trump’s world and they
only live in it at his sufferance.
He not only survived Jan. 6
and his second impeachment
— he has thrived since.
Trump’s rallies are still
remarkably well-attended, he is
making progress in his project
of killing the careers of
Republicans who supported his
impeachment, and big
majorities of Republicans tell
pollsters they want Trump to
run for president again.
And yet, there are reasons
to believe Trump’s dominance
is exaggerated and that it is
slowly degrading, such that by
the time the 2024 Republican
primaries roll around, he’ll be
challengeable and beatable if he
runs.
It’s not unusual for a former
president to own his party until
someone comes and takes it
from him — Bill Clinton prior
to Barack Obama, for example.
What’s different is that
parties typically aren’t kind to
one-term presidents who lost
their reelection bids, and
generally former presidents
aren’t so bent on exercising
control over their parties once
they vacate the White House.
Part of the reason Trump
has clung to his fanciful stolen-
election narrative is to avoid the
stench of defeat of Jimmy
Carter and George H.W. Bush.
On top of this, Trump has an
intact political operation that is
paying a lot of attention to his
potential endorsements and
how they will or won’t enhance
his own power.
This obviously makes
Trump an important player,
and maybe more. But there are
indications of an undertow and
factors that might increase it in
the years ahead.
Trump’s media footprint is
much reduced. Data from
SocialFlow shows engagement
with Trump stories plummeting
in March of this year and it took
another jag down in August and
September.
As for Trump’s polling
numbers, Republicans might
tell pollsters they want him to
run again as a way to stick a
finger in the eye of the media or
as a general statement of warm
feelings toward him. Even if
these findings are based on
entirely forthcoming and
sincere sentiments, wanting
Trump to run is a threshold
question that falls short of a
commitment to vote for him
two and a half years from now.
Trump presumably will be
vulnerable to electability
questions. He lost last fall in
part because Biden
outperformed Hillary Clinton
among suburban voters and
independents. Biden is
alienating these voters, but
there’s nothing to indicate that
Trump has done anything since
November 2020 to make
himself less repellent to them.
GOP politicians have every
reason to do what they can to
keep Trump and his voters on
board in the interest of a unified
base in the run-up to the 2022
midterms. But if Republicans
take Congress next year and are
worried about keeping it in
2024, they will be wary of once
again needing candidates to run
better than Trump in swing
districts to keep their gavels.
Trump has an increasingly
self-referential message. In
2016, he talked of fighting for
his voters and hammered
neglected issues of concern to
them, foremost among them
trade and immigration. Now, he
urges those voters to fight for
him based on the imperative of
denying his loss, which is of
overwhelming concern to his
ego and continued political
viability.
At the end of the day, what
primary voters in both parties
most want is to win. And this is
Trump’s true Achilles’ heel.

Give America
a New Birth
of Freedom in
Virginia
The joke goes
that a slip of the
tongue for a
politician means
that they
accidentally said
what they actually
believe.
Now Democrats
are trying to clean up
the mess created by
Virginia Democratic candidate for
governor, Terry McAuliffe, when he said
in a debate on Sept. 28, “I don’t think
parents should be telling schools what
they should teach.”
McAuliffe’s 5-point lead over his
opponent, Republican Glenn Youngkin,
who has made parental control in
education a central issue in his campaign,
has disappeared.
Big-name Democrats, including
former President Barack Obama, are now
showing up in Virginia with a mop and
pail. Vice President Kamala Harris sent a
video to over 300 Black churches
statewide, urging support for McAuliffe.
According to some opinions, Harris’
politicking for McAuliffe in churches
violates either or both the Johnson
Amendment, which prohibits tax-exempt
entities such as churches from
electioneering, and the Hatch Act, which
prohibits federal government officials
from using their position to influence the
outcome of an election.
Former Democratic Virginia Gov.
Douglas Wilder, Virginia’s first Black
governor, has weighed in saying he
believes churches will jeopardize their tax-
exempt status if they show Harris’ video.
McAuliffe followed up with an ad
claiming what he said is being

This Can’t
Be True
By Steve Feinstein, writer for American
Thinker
Unbelievable. That’s really the
only way to describe the never-ending
onslaught of bad news and incredible
occurrences that are exploding in our
daily lives. Just when you think it
couldn’t get any worse, that they can’t
be serious, that it seems as if the
“Biden” administration’s sole goal is to
make each person’s life as wretchedly
painful as possible, BAM! — another
incredible misery warhead detonates
on our reality.
So far, in only nine months, the
Biden war machine has inflicted al
most incomprehensible damage on
the American people:
Rising Inflation
With their excessive government
spending and totally-over-the-top
COVID unemployment assistance
(to the point that far too many people
are completely disincentivized from
going back to work), inflation has
roared back with a vengeance not
seen in decades. The economy is reel
ing, household budgets are upside-
down, and everyone’s purchasing
power is melting away before our
eyes. The government stutters and
yammers about it being “transitory,”
but everyone can see that’s simply not
true.
High Energy Prices
After pipeline cancelations and
the widespread rescinding of oil ex
ploration leases, the administration
has accomplished its mission: it’s sent
the world’s oil market the unmistak
able, intentional message that Amer
ica is no longer interested in being a
top-tier oil-producer. Predictably, the
price of crude oil has risen from the
$40s/bbl to the mid-$80s/bbl. Gaso
line and heating oil are more expen
sive now than we ever thought they’d
be again.
Vaccine Mandates
These are not “vaccines.” A real
vaccine prevents disease and prevents
the transmission of that disease.
These do neither. (To their credit, if
you “read between the lines” and paid
close attention in the beginning, the
drug-makers never said they were tra
ditional vaccines — only that they
would mitigate the symptoms to
some degree and reduce the severity
of the infection.) These are really
nothing more than therapeutics, with
bad side-effects. Safer, more effective,
and cheaper therapeutics already ex
ist, like ivermectin and hydroxychlo
roquine. But the government’s politi
cally motivated refusal to encourage
or even allow any mention or use of
these proven therapeutics is further
evidence that the entire COVID de
bacle has been hijacked by Progres
sives to rig elections and wrest control
of the country. They need to perpetu
ate the public’s fear of the COVID
crisis in order to maintain their con
trol of the voting process and they are
doing everything they can toward that
end.
