Wheeler Falls To Bryan
RTCA Loses To Portal

It was a tough week
for the Bulldogs football
team of Wheeler County
High School as they ran
into a very tough Bryan
County team. Wheeler
hosted the Redskins on
Friday night of last week
and fell 40-13.
The Treutlen County
High School Vikings foot
ball team took on the Blue
Tide of Long County on
Thursday night of last
week in Soperton.
Treutlen fell in the game
60-14, and it was the first
loss for the Vikings ever to
Long County.
Long jumped out to
an early lead in the first
quarter of the game as
they put four touchdowns
on the board. They scored
their first one on a run of
46 yards, the second came
on a run of 50 yards, the
Bryan County took
the lead in the first quar
ter, 6-0. Wheeler got on
the board and took a 7-0
lead in the second quarter
of the game, but Bryan
answered and added a
touchdown on an 11-yard
run to go ahead 14-7.
Bryan made it 20-7
on a long pass play and
then 26-7 on a long run.
In the third quarter the
third on a 60-yard run,
and the final on a 2-yard
run. That put them on top
28-0 at the end of the first
quarter.
Treutlen got on the
board in the second quar
ter with 3:40 on the clock.
The touchdown came on
a 24-yard pass from Jor
dan Coney to Kolby
McLendon. This was the
first touchdown of the
season for the Vikings.
They added the extra
point to close the lead to
28-7.
Long added one more
Redskins got a fumble re
covery for a touchdown
to push their lead to 34-7.
Both teams scored
one more time to make
the final score 40-13 with
Bryan County taking the
win. This week the Bull
dogs of Wheeler will host
rival Montgomery
County on Friday night at
7:30 p.m.
touchdown before the
end of the first half to
head into the locker rooms
with the Tide on top 36-7.
In the second half of
the game Long added
three more rushing touch
downs on their way to the
60-14 win. The final score
from Treutlen came on a
16-yard pass from Coney
to Cooper Brantley.
Treutlen is off this
week and will be back in
action next week when
the face Toombs County
in Soperton with kickoff
at 7:30 p.m.

Class A Portal Panthers
Thursday night in Portal
28-23. The start of the
game was delayed for al
most two hours due to
lighting in the area.
The Panthers opened
the scoring on a 52-yard
touchdown run by Quar
terback Elijah Coleman.
The PAT was good for a
7-0 Portal lead at the end
of the first quarter.
After a drive by the
Crusaders stalled, Kicker
Justin Bowers kicked a
15-yard field goal with
11:50 left in the second
period to make the score
7-3 Panthers.
Portal answered with
another Coleman touch
down run from just
2-yards out. The PAT was
successful for a 14-3 lead.
The Panthers increased
their lead on their next
offensive possession to
21-3 on an Amir Jackson
touchdown from 34-yards
out at the 9:11 mark.
The Crusaders cut
the Panthers' lead to 21-
10 with 7:08 remaining in
the half when Quarter
back T.J. Stanley hit
Jashaun Powell in the en-
dzone from 7-yards
out. Kicker Hayden
Meeks made the PAT.
RTCA recovered the en
suing kickoff but was un
able to score for a 21-qo
Portal lead at halftime.
RTCA received the
second half kickoff and
started the scoring with
9:56 on the clock on a
5-yard rush by Justin
Powell. Bowers kicked
the PAT. Portal led to 21 -
17 at the end of the quar
ter.
The Crusaders took
the lead with 8:30 left for
the first time in the game
23-21 when Justin Powell
scored his second touch
down of the night from
two yards out. The PAT
was no good.
Portal took the lead
back when Coleman ran
from 46-yards out. PAT
was good for a 28-23 lead.
RTCA tried to come
back in the game once
more, but Stanley was in
tercepted with 4:50 left.
The Crusaders forced
the Panthers to punt on
fourth down with time
running down. RTCA got
the ball back on offense
from their own 3-yard
line, but Stanley fumbled
the ball and the Panthers
recovered with just :30
seconds remaining, se
curing the 28-23 victory.
The Crusaders fall to
1-2 for the season and
play their first home
game this Friday night
hosting Briarwood Acad
emy. Kickoff is set for
7:30 p.m.

Crusaders softball team
played one game last
week against the War Ea
gles of Brentwood. It was
a close game with Brent
wood pulling ahead late.
RTCA got on the
board first with a run in
the top of the second in
ning and then added to
that lead in the fifth with
one more to take a 2-0
lead. Brentwood plated a
run in the bottom of the
fifth inning to close the
lead to 2-1.
In the bottom of the
sixth inning Brentwood
added two more runs to
pull ahead, 3-2, on RTCA.
RTCA was not able to
score in the top of the
seventh inning as Brent
wood got the win, 3-2.
This week RTCA
played Pinewood on
Tuesday after presstime.
They will not be back in
action until Monday of
next week when they host
Edmund Burke at 5:30
p.m.

NOTICE OF
PROPERTY TAX INCREASE
The City of Vidalia has tentatively adopted a millage rate equal to 2021 millage rate for
City of Vidalia (Toombs) of 4.16 for ALL City of Vidalia citizens. This will require an in
crease in property taxes by 3.53 percent for Vidalia / Toombs residents and 16.01 percent
for Vidalia / Montgomery residents.
All concerned citizens are invited to the third public hearing on this tax increase to be
held at the Municipal Annex, 302 First Street East, Vidalia, GA on Wednesday, September
14, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. The final millage rate will be adopted following the public hearing
(approximately 12:30 p.m.)
The tentative increase will result in increases of 142 mills and 574 mills, respectively.
Without this tentative tax increase, the millage rates will be no more than 4.016 mills and
3.586. The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $100,000 would
be $5.68 / $22.96 respectively.

ceded a pair of second-half
goals to fall to the Rams
(2-0-1) in a heartbreaker
on the road.
“The girls fought hard
tonight, but the result was
not what we wanted,” In
terim Head Coach Phillip
Borde said. “We will con
tinue to work in order to
get the positive results we
are looking for.”
CIU opened the
match outshooting BPC
8-5 with Kelsie Stapler
managing to thwart five
shots on goal from the
Rams. The Lady Barons
were able to break through
the scoreless tie in the 34th
minute as Katelyn Ladner
managed to slot home the
opening goal with the as
sist coming from Chloe
Bailey.
Brewton-Parker was
able to keep the Rams
away for the remainder of
the half despite the four-
shot advantage for Colum
bia International.
The Rams continued
to apply offensive pressure
to the Lady Barons’ de
fense as they produced six
shots versus BPC’s three in
the first 27 minutes of the
second half. CIU managed
to back two goals within
moments of each other,
scoring in the 74th and
76th minute to take a 2-1
lead.
BPC struggled to pro
duce an attack for the
match's final minutes, re
cording just two shots to
close out the match.
Ladner nets her first
goal of the season with
Bailey notching her first
assist of the 2022 cam
paign. Ladner led BPC
with three total shots and a
pair on frame. The Lady
Barons were outdone of
fensively as the Rams held
a 22-11 advantage in over
all attempts and an 8-4
edge in shots on goal.
Defensively, Stapler
notched six saves for the
evening.
Brewton-Parker will
remain on the road for the
next pair of matches begin
ning with a contest at No.
6-ranked Keiser (Fla.) on
Thursday.
