Abner was angered at the accusation and moved to David's army, promising to bring all of Israel over to David. Joab, commander of David's army, returned from a raid and learned that Abner had come over to serve David. He was not pleased. Joab sent for Abner to meet him. When Abner arrived, Joab took him aside as though to speak with him privately. To avenge the blood of his brother, who Abner had killed with the butt of his spear, Joab stabbed Abner in the stomach and Abner died. Hearing of Abner's death David proclaimed, “... May his blood fall upon the head of Joab and upon all his father's house. May Joab's house never be without someone who has a running sore or leprosy or who leans on a crutch or who falls by the sword or who lacks food."
