As Halloween nears this weekend,
several festivals and trick-or-treating
events will be taking place throughout
the area. Make sure to catch them all to
maximize the fun and festivity for you
and your children!
Toombs County
Festivals
The Downtown Vidalia Association
will be hosting its annual Spooktacular
event downtown on Thursday October
27, from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. During
this event, children will parade through
the downtown Vidalia area in costumes
and receive candy and goodies from local
businesses and groups. For more infor

The Lyons Main Street Association
will hold its 2nd annual Scare on the
Square in the Downtown Lyons area on

SCARECROWS 'ROUND DOWNTOWN - The Downtown Vidalia Association is celebrating
Fall with "Scarecrows 'Round Downtown," The annual community event allows businesses,
groups, schools, and individuals to decorate the downtown area with homemade scare
crow decorations. Community Flospice pulled out all the stops to create a fun and festive
display.
Area Early Voting Above Normal;
Records Broken Across Georgia

Across the state, early voter
turnout has broken records, and
in the area, the indications are
that the turnout will be above
normal.
In Toombs County, as of
October 17, (the latest figures
posted online as of Monday
morning), 1821 voters have cast
ballots, with 275 absentee bal
lots issued and 240 of these re
turned.
In Montgomery County,
Registrar Bobbie Carpenter re
ported that 502 early votes had
been cast by Monday morning
and 152 absentee ballots had
been requested. The numbers
indicate that voting in the mid
term election in Montgomery
County may be heavier than
usual.
In Wheeler County, Super
visor of Elections Sheila Cheek
reported that 307 people had
voted as of Monday morning
and75 absentee ballots had been
requested. “This a little above
normal turnout,” Cheek said of
balloting in Wheeler County.
Statewide Early Voting
A report issued Sunday, Oc
tober 23, by the Georgia Secre
tary of State’s Office, revealed
that Georgia voters continued to
hit record-breaking turnouts on
October 22, the first mandatory
Saturday of early voting. By the
next morning, reports showed
approximately 740K Georgia
voters had cast their ballots dur
ing in-person early voting.
A whopping 79,682 showed
up on Saturday, marking an as
tounding 159% increase from
day six of 2018 midterm early
voting and shattering the turn-

Higgston Crossroads
Claims Another Life

A third life was claimed at the intersection of James Street (Georgia
Plighway 130) and Sawmill Road (Georgia Plighway 292) in Higgston,
as a truck and car collided on Thursday afternoon, October 20, Drivers
were detoured around the scene of the accident for around an hour
by Higgston Volunteer Firefighters. Details on the mishap will come at a
later date as the Georgia State Patrol has completed its investigation
but has not released the report. A local couple died at the same inter
section after a two-vehicle crash in 2019,

October 20, the Montgom
ery County Commission
hired Kayla Cheek as the
Elections Supervisor for
Montgomery County.
Last year, the Commis
sion voted to propose leg
islation to the state govern
ment to establish a Board
of Elections to replace the
current Registrar’s Office.
