A Wheeler County
man has been arrested and
charged on 16 counts in
connection with a rash of
vandalism that occurred
in Glenwood in the early
morning hours of October
17.
Michael Deshaun Wil
liams of 68 N. Fourth Street,
Glenwood, was arrested
by the Wheeler County
Sheriff’s Office (WCSO)
on October 20. He was
incarcer
ated in the
Wheeler
County
Jail on 3
counts of

Property and 13 counts of
Criminal Damage to Prop
erty.
Chief Deputy Richie
Floyd said the WCSO was
called to Glenwood around
7:20 a.m. October 17 af
ter damage was reported
at City Hall. Law enforce
ment discovered damage to
four other buildings down
town.
Glenwood Mayor
G.M. Joiner said the dam
age was “strictly vandal
ism.” He said, apparently
officers found no evidence
of burglary or theft.
Deputy Floyd asked
that anyone with informa
tion about the incident to
call the WCSO at 912-568-
7151.
Georgia early voting turnout
keeps setting records
By Dave Williams
Bureau Chief
Capitol Beat News Service
Early voting turnout
continued to set records
in Georgia during the first
week of the early voting pe
riod.
More than 18,100 vot
ers cast early ballots on
Sunday, when early voting
was only offered in some
counties. The Sunday to
tal soared 211% above the
early voting mark set on
the first day of Sunday early
voting ahead of the 2018
midterm elections.
As of Monday morn
ing, about 758,000 voters
had taken advantage of the
first week of early voting.
That shattered previous
midterm turnout records
during every day of early
voting last week and was
close to the early voting
turnout ahead of the presi
dential election in 2020.
“Voters are enthusias
tic, but most importantly,
have the options available
to get that vote in early,”
Georgia Secretary of State
Brad Raffensperger said.
“Voters registered at the
[state Department of Driv
er Services] or online, took
advantage of My Voter
Page, and have the most
up-to-date information
available to make a plan.”
Raffensperger and
other Republicans have ar
gued the record early vot
ing turnout refutes Demo
crats’ arguments that last
year’s controversial elec
tion reforms enacted by the
GOP-controlled General
Assembly are not suppress
ing the vote.
But Democrat Stacey
Abrams, who is challeng
ing Republican Gov. Brian
Kemp this year, said Mon
day the strong turnout
doesn’t mean 2021’s Sen
ate Bill 202 isn’t making
it harder for Georgians to
vote.
“Turnout does not dis
pel voter suppression,” she
said. “Suppression is about
barriers to access. ... Peo
ple showing up is in spite of
the barriers.”
Abrams campaign
manager Lauren Groh-
Wargo said while in-per-
son early voting turnout is
setting records, far fewer
Georgians have requested
absentee ballots this year.
Last year’s bill requires vot
ers to show a photo ID to
vote absentee and signifi
cantly limits the number of
absentee ballot drop boxes.
“That’s where you real
ly see the impact of SB202,”
Groh-Wargo said.
Groh-Wargo said
Democrats are encouraged
by the strong early voting
turnout among women,
which she ascribed to con
cern over the abortion is
sue, and among Black vot
ers, who historically lean
Democratic.
Raffensperger said
reports of long lines have
been rare, with some lines
in the metro areas being re
ported.
Early voting turnout is
expected to increase during
the next couple of weeks.
The final day of early voting
will be Nov. 4.

cations and hours in your

of State’s My Voter Page.
