Sports That Put
Athletes' Eyes At Risk
Playing sports can be
beneficial to athletes’ phys
ical and mental health. Re
searchers at the American
College of Sports Medi
cine discovered that mid
dle school students who
played sports and per
formed best on tests that
gauged strength, endur
ance and aerobic capacity
also performed better aca
demically
Sports are beneficial in
many ways, but playing is
not without certain risks,
including the potential to
cause harm to parts of the
body, including the eyes.
The American Academy of
Ophthalmology says
30,000 sports-related eye
injuries are treated in
United States emergency
rooms each year. However,
90 percent of serious eye
injuries can be prevented
by wearing protective eye-
wear.
Different activities put
the eyes at varying levels of
risk, so some sports are
higher risk than others.
Sports that use a bat or
racquet, ball, or puck are
considered high risk for
eye injuries. In addition,
contact sports, which in
clude American football,
rugby and mixed martial
arts, also are considered el
evated risk for eye injury.
Conversely, gymnastics,
cycling and swimming are
considered low risk. Here’s
a closer look at eye inju
ries, their connection to
sports and how to mitigate
them.
Basketball
The AAO says basket
ball causes the most sports
eye injuries in the United
States, beating out baseball
and softball, pellet guns,
racquetball, and even
hockey. Using polycarbon
ate, shatterproof lenses can
prevent many eye injuries
when playing basketball
and other sports. They
should be tested to meet
the American Society of
Testing and Materials
(ASTM) standards or pass
CSA racquet sports stan
dards.
Blindness
Full-contact martial
arts and boxing pose ex
tremely high risk of serious
eye injury, including blind
ness. There currently is no
satisfactory eye protection
for these sports, though
thumbless gloves may re
duce the risk in boxing.
Face shield
Wearing a helmet with
a full plastic face shield
when playing sports like
hockey or football can
shield the eyes from injury.
Eye checkup
It’s a good idea for ath
letes to get an eye exam so
they can discuss risks and
preventative measures
with their physicians prior
to playing.
Eye safety should be a
concern for all athletes.
Some simple precautions
can dramatically decrease
athletes’ risk for eye injury.
Loran
continued from page IB
whose competitive na
ture was obvious, and I
learned a lot from him.
When it came to recruit
ing, he had the view that
it was important to be
yourself and know ev
erything there is to know
about the kid you are re
cruiting.”
Time spent with Dye
and Terry Bowden was
important in developing
his own recruiting phi
losophy. It begins with
his widespread contacts.
Dell knows high school
coaches all over the coun
try and they respect him,
his work ethic and his in
tegrity. They know kids
will be in good hands if
they choose Georgia.
Finding out as much
as possible with a high
school prospect is given
the highest priority with
Dell, who makes it his
business to find out who
influences the prospect,
who he listens to most
often and who he seeks
for advice.
Further, it is impor
tant to learn about the
prospect’s work ethic, his
character and his attitude
about his academic sta
tus. Dell maintains rap
port with kids when he
signs them, even when
he is not their position
coach.
To learn about a kid
as an athlete, he places
high emphasis on video
tape study. He reviews
tape at his home office,
even on the phone when
he is on an airplane.
With an ability to re
late to any kid, regardless
of his background, Dell
recruits the parents, too.
He wants them to know
their son’s best interest
is of paramount concern
for him as their coach.
“It is pretty simple,”
he says. “When a parent
gives me their son, I want
to return him as a man.”
