Clean Week For Toombs County Lady Bulldogs

The Lady Bulldogs
softball team of Toombs
County High School
played three games last
week, picking up wins in
all of them to improve their
record to 11-5 overall and
5-2 in Region play. That
put them at the top of Re
gion 3AA with their head-
to-head win over Vidalia
earlier in the season. There
is still a lot of softball left,
but this is shaping up to be
one of the best seasons in
TCHS softball history,
vs. Screven
The Toombs County
Lady Dawgs Softball team
secured a decisive 10-4 vic
tory over Screven County
on Monday of last week.
The scoring was initi
ated in the first inning by
the Lady Dawgs when
Casey Cantwell hit a dou
ble, bringing in one run. In
the second inning, a single
by AJ Jarriel propelled the
Lady Dawgs into the lead
with a score of 2-1. Anis-
ton Powell’s single in the
third inning extended the
Lady Dawgs’ lead to 4-1
and they didn't look back
from there.
Cantwell was the win
ning pitcher for the Lady
Dawgs, allowing nine hits
and four runs over four in
nings, while striking out
seven and walking one.
Shay Stringer earned the
save by pitching three in
nings and striking out
eight.
The Lady Dawgs
showcased their offensive
prowess by accumulating
15 hits during the game.
Natalie Quintero, Kassidy
Brantley, Emerson Powell,
Powell, Jarriel, and
Cantwell each contributed
two hits for the Lady
Dawgs. Cantwell, a key
player in the middle of the
lineup, led the team with
two runs batted in and had
a 2-for-4 performance at
the plate.
Defensively, the Lady
Dawgs were flawless, not
committing a single error
in the field.
vs. Brantley
In a tightly contested
game on Tuesday, the
Toombs County Lady
Dawgs Softball team edged
out Brantley County for a
3-1 Region victory.
The spotlight was on
Shay Stringer, who pitched
for the Lady Dawgs. She
showcased her prowess in
the circle, giving up just
one hit and one unearned
run over seven innings.
Stringer also managed to
strike out seven batters.
She issued two walks.
Toombs County set
the pace early on, taking
the lead in the first inning
when Casey Cantwell hit a
single that drove in Nora
Grace Mercer from sec
ond. They added runs in
the fourth and sixth in
nings to take the win.
The Lady Dawgs ex
hibited a balanced offen
sive performance. Natalie
Quintero, Mercer, Stringer,
and Cantwell each secured
a hit. Additionally, Quin
tero, Kassidy Brantley, and
Cantwell contributed by
driving in a run apiece,

victory. Spearheading the
offense, Casey Cantwell
showcased her skill with
three singles and a sacrifice
bunt. Natalie Quintero
contributed a single,
reached base on an error,
and took a walk. Shay
Stringer complemented
the team’s efforts with a
single and a pair of walks.
On the defensive
front, Stringer continued
to demonstrate her prow
ess in the pitcher’s circle
with seven strikeouts. Nora
Grace Mercer notably con
tributed with two defen
sive outs and Emerson
Powell contributed with a
handful of defensive plays
that helped secure the vic
tory.
The game remained a
tense stalemate until the
bottom of the second,
when Aniston Powell’s sin
gle ushered in the first run.
Marishka Smith capital
ized on an error to add an
other run for the Lady
Dawgs. However, Pierce
County wasn’t far behind,
narrowing the gap to 2-1
with a single in the top of
the fourth. Turning the ta
bles, they seized a 4-2 lead
in the fifth inning.
Undeterred, the Lady
Dawgs mounted a come
back in the bottom of the
fifth. A pair of doubles
from Mercer and E. Powell
respectively brought in a
run each, and Cantwell’s
single leveled the score at
4-4. The game’s climax un
folded in the seventh in
ning when A Powell’s
clutch single sealed the
deal, giving the Lady
Dawgs their well-earned
walk off victory.
