Halloween
Events
The Downtown Vidalia
Association will host its
annual Spooktacular on
Thursday, October 26,
from 5 p.m. until 6:30
p.m„ while the City of
Lyons' annual Scare on
the Square will occur
on Saturday, October
27, from 6 p.m. until 8
p.m.

Voters will visit the polls
in a general election on No
vember 7. Several area seats
are on the ballots in Wheeler,
Montgomery and Toombs
counties.
City of Glenwood
In Glenwood, several City
Council posts and the may-
oral seat will be on the ballot,
as well as a county-wide Spe
cial Local Option Sales Tax
(SPLOST) referendum.
Also, for the first time in
40 years, long-time Mayor
and businessman G.M. Joiner
will have opposition as he
tosses his hat into the political
ring one more time. Ava Bess
Jones, a teacher, is challenging
Joiner for the post.
The five Glenwood City
Council seats are also up for
grabs and two newcomers are
challenging four incumbents
for the positions. One of the
long-time Council members,
Winston Powell, will not seek
reelection.

Citizens Give Back With "Barbecue for the Blue"

sized the importance of recognizing that citizens are supportive
of law enforcement's work.

cal police officers for their hard
work, as the Vidalia Police De
partment and their families were
invited for a barbecue dinner at
the Swift Creek Lodge in Vidalia
on Thursday, October 19.
The event, which the citi
zens labeled “Barbecue for the
Blue,” was planned by Bernie
Nelson, along with Bill Tor
rance, Matt Oxley, John Blewett,
and Joel Thomas, as a method of
showing appreciation to the offi
cers for the time and effort they
put into protecting the city and
its citizens. Officers were invited
to enjoy food and fellowship,
while also testing their luck for
a chance at winning several free
door prizes with a total value of
$625 that were made possible by
sponsors, such as Ricky Mitchell.
“I had an idea several weeks
ago to put together this func
tion, so I went to the Chief James
Jermon and asked [if we could
do this for the Department],”
Nelson explained. “We pretty
much started from scratch and
worked our way forward. He
gave me a number of people we
could feed at this location, and I
began meeting people to try to

The Vidalia Police Depart
ment introduced another new
officer to the Vidalia City Coun
cil at its regular monthly meeting
on Tuesday, October 10.
Officer Matthew Roberts is
no stranger to the City of Vida
lia as he previously worked with
Environmental Service Group
(ESG) in the City. “He is well-
trained with the city, but he did
work at ESG at first,” Vidalia
Police Chief James Jermon re
marked. “We just took his pipes,
wrenches, and screws and gave
him a gun.”
