Thanksgiving break
has come and gone for
Brewton-Parker Women’s
Basketball as the Lady
Barons (9-1, 3-0 SSAC)
traveled to Montgomery,
Alabama, to continue
their 2023-24 Southern
States Athletic Confer
ence campaign on Tues
day night. Brewton-
Parker secured a close
one-point victory in a
tough matchup against
the Eagles (3-8, 0-3
SSAC), utilizing a mas
sive swing in the third
quarter to remain un
beaten in SSAC action.
“Tonight was a fun
game but a tough one,”
Head Coach Steve Ed
wards said. “Faulkner is
extremely difficult to
beat at home. We battled
with some early foul
trouble, but instead of
making excuses, we made
plays. I’m super proud of
our effort tonight.”
Brewton-Parker
opened things with a 7-0
run led-off by a three-
pointer from Angel
McRae, leaving six and
half minutes to play.
Faulkner responded well
with six unanswered
points in the next couple
of minutes to pull the
deficit down to just one
point.
Scores from McRae
and Tajahnae Wiggins on
back-to-back trips down
the floor, followed by a
pair of free throws from
AAliyah Clay, moved the
Lady Barons to a 13-6 ad
vantage with three and a
half to play.
Faulkner closed the
quarter with six more
points, but Keonya
Mincey helped BPC with
a five-point effort to give
the Lady Barons an 18-12
lead after the first 10
minutes.
After an early score
from the Eagles and four
points from the Lady Bar
ons, Faulkner went on a
two-minute, 9-0 run to
secure a 23-22 lead with
6:03 on the clock. It was
all Faulkner in the second
quarter as the hosts
bested Brewton-Parker
32-12 in scoring.
The Eagles shot for
68.8% (ll-of-16) from
the field, while holding
the Lady Barons to just
27.8% (5-of-18) from the
floor and 0-9 from be
yond the arc. Faulkner
closed out the quarter
holding a 44-30 lead over
Brewton-Parker.
Fortunately for Brew
ton-Parker, the visitors
switched the script and
dominated the third
quarter for a huge mo
mentum shift in the con
test. Five quick points
from McRae and Madi
son Evans cut the deficit
to nine points.
After some back-and-
forth play early, BPC cut
a double-digit deficit
down to a two-possession
game. With 6:40 on the
clock, Evans dropped a
trey and followed with a
jumper before Cori Keats
knocked down a shot
from deep to cut the
Faulkner lead to 52-48
with 5:13 to play.
Clay cut the deficit to
three with a trey at the
3:54 mark and sparked a
13-3 run to give Brew
ton-Parker a 61-57 ad
vantage with 1:12 on the
clock. A trey from Mincey
beat out the buzzer to
close out the third install
ment with a 64-59 lead.
Brewton-Parker out-
scored Faulkner 34-15 in
the third quarter and shot
for 57.1% (l2-of-2l)
from the floor and 50%
(7-of-14) from three with
Evans leading with 11
points, followed up by
Mincey with eight. De
fensively, BPC held
Faulkner to just six field
goals and zero threes,
taking advantage of four
turnovers with three
steals.
Mincey lit the quar
ter up early with a jumper
and a three-pointer to
give BPC a 10-point ad
vantage. Faulkner
chipped away at the defi
cit, pulling the BPC lead
down to two with eight
unanswered with 5:45 to
play.
Scoring became
sparse with Evans finding
a basket at 5:24. The
Lady Barons did not
score another until the
3:52 mark from Wiggins
for a 73-69 lead. A quick
response from Faulkner
followed to cut the lead
to two points.
Two minutes ran off
the clock until the next
deep-range bucket fell at
the 1:18 mark from the
hosts for a 74-73 Faulkner
edge. After a scoreless 60
seconds, Evans found a
pair of free throws with
six seconds left to help
secure a 75-74 win for
Brewton-Parker.
BPC finished the
night shooting for 41.2%
(28-of-68) from the
floor, 31.3% (lO-of-32)
from three, and 90% (9-
of-10) from the charity
stripe. Mincey dropped a
season-best 20 points to
lead BPC, scoring four
from beyond the arc. Ev
ans dropped 15 points
and snagged five boards
while being followed by
14 points from Wiggins
as well as a double-dou
ble from McRae with 14
points and 12 rebounds.
BPC led 41-37 off the
glass while also leading
17-11 in assists with a
game-high of five from
Clay. The Lady Barons
scored 24 points in the
paint and 10 from turn
overs while the bench
