Love Field for my flight.
He was anxious to miss
the traffic emptying the
Cotton Bowl, but I kept
lingering back until I saw
Texas fumble the punt
which gave Georgia one
last opportunity for vic
tory.
The Longhorn punt
returner fumbled the
punt and Brandt is yell
ing, “Let’s go.” I lingered
until that fateful mo
ment. Vince (Dooley)
was telling George Haff-
ner, offensive coordina
tor and play caller, to
“put it up George,” but
Haffner went with his gut
which was to have John
Lastinger run the option.
You, like everybody
else, know the rest of the
story. Lastinger scored
on a 17-yard run which
brought Georgia one of
the sweetest victories in
history.
Geogia fans to this
day talk about the time
in Dallas where it will al
ways be 10 to 9.
I got to see Lastinger
score, and I made it to the
airport on time to make
my flight to Miami where
I got to the Orange Bowl
just after kickoff. Ne
braska, experiencing one
of the coldest cold spells
ever in Lincoln landed
in Miami in one of the
balmiest conditions pos
sible.
That likely made it
tough on the Cornhusk-
ers to practice and play
in all that heat, but you
would not know it when
the second half came
around. Miami jumped
out to a 17-0 lead, but
Nebraska fought back.
With time ebbing
away, Nebraska scored
and could have won the
game with a two-point
conversion pass with Mi
ami leading 31-30. I was
standing on the Corn-
husker sideline, no more
than a dozen yards from
Coach Tom Osborne.
He never wavered
following Nebraska’s
touchdown. He quickly
raised his right hand with
his fore finger and mid
dle finger signaling that
he wanted to go for two.
An all-out blitz by
Miami forced quarter
back Turner Gill off bal
ance. Even so, if he had
led the receiver a yard
to the outside, Nebraska
likely would have com
pleted the pass for vic
tory.
A few weeks later, I
was with Osborne in At
lanta, and we had a long
conversation about the
game. I asked him if he
had thought about kick
ing the extra point since
a tie might have enabled
his team to win the na
tional championship.
“Never crossed my
mind,” Osborne said. “I
know I would not have
voted for a coach who
made that decision. I
wanted to win it on the
field. I did not want to
back into a champion
ship.”

Two former Vidalia
High School Indians will
be back in town on Janu
ary 4, to host a baseball
camp for local youth. Ca-
den Spivey and Ty Dally
both moved on to play
baseball at the Division 1
level and were part of the
VHS State Champion
ship team in 2022.
Spivey went on to
pitch for the Irish of the
University of Notre
Dame and had a record
of 4-1, and pitched 40 in
nings as a freshman. Dai
ley is playing for the
Bears of Mercer Univer
sity and was named to
the All-SoCon Team and
was selected as a Fresh
man All-American.
The camp will be
held at the Vidalia Recre
ation Department on
Field 1 on January 4.
Ages 7-11 will hold camp
from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00
a.m., and ages 12-15 will
be from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00
p.m. This one day camp
aims to improve confi
dence, instill healthy
competition, and foster
camaraderie among
young athletes. They will
be focusing on fielding,
pitching and hitting.
The camp is $50 per

City of Vidalia City Manager, William Bedingfield, until 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday,
January 30, 2024, on the following property owned by the City of Vidalia:
Exhibit A - Legal Description
All that certain tract or parcel of land situated, lying and being in the 51st G.M.
District of Toombs County, Georgia, being in the City of Vidalia, together with
all improvements thereon as shown on that certain plat of survey dated No
vember 19,2002, prepared for City of Vidalia by Paul S. Buchele, Georgia Reg
istered Land Surveyor, and being recorded in Plat Book 29, Page(s) 77, Toombs
County records. Said plat and the reference thereof are incorporated herein for
a more complete and accurate description.
The within described tract is bounded, now or formerly, according to the afore
mentioned plat as follows: Northeasterly by the right-of-way of Southeast Main
Street; Southeasterly by the right-of-way of Truman Street; Southwesterly by a
0.3857 acre tract of land; Northwesterly by lands of Gerald Pryor.
Subject to any and all applicable zoning ordinances, easements, restrictive cov
enants, and/or rights-of-ways in use or of record. [Map & Parcel No. V18 179]
This property includes approximately 1.14 acres of land. Bids will be opened at
Vidalia City Hall, located at 302 East First Street, and will be recorded at that
time. The contract shall be awarded to the highest bidder whose bid meets the
requirements and criteria set forth in this invitation for bids at a called Vidalia
City Council meeting or a regularly scheduled meeting following the receipt of
the bids.
Each bid must be accompanied by the following when submitted:
1. Total bid price to purchase the property
2. Ability to close and make payment in full within forty-five (45) days of award
3. Must include the specific committed use and purpose for the property in a
Letter of Intent addressed to City Manager William Bedingfield.
4. Any available construction plans/drawings would be preferred to be submit
ted, but not required.
Winning bid recipient must issue a first right of refusal to purchase said prop
erty to the City of Vidalia should the property be sold within five (5) calendar
years of the bid award date.
Proposals/bids may not be withdrawn subsequent to the called/scheduled City
Council meeting. The Vidalia City Council reserves the right to reject any and
all proposals/bids and to waive any technicalities/irregularities and to award
the bid based on the highest and best interests of the city.

none of which garnering
the #1 spot, and a 4th
place rank as a team.
With this all as a back
drop heading into the Ri
valry Dual, TCHS had
something to prove.
The Rivalry Dual
started in 2022 as a way
for both programs to dis
play their entire program
and offer the community
a glimpse of what is to
come for each program.

Blount, and I have a great
relationship. We devel
oped this Rivalry Dual
my first year here to cre
ate some community
buzz about our programs
and it’s growing. This
year we had middle
school, junior varsity,
and youth matches. Peo
ple are often surprised to
hear that this community
has such a strong wres
tling culture. Bobby and
I are committed to build
ing that culture and our
Rivalry Dual helps do
that,” said TCHS Coach
Allen of the Rivalry Dual.
The MatDawgs’
depth was too much for
the Indians as they ended
the evening taking the
win in the Rivalry Dual,
48-30. Notable wins for
Toombs were pins by
120 lb. Wyatt Bunch, 144
lb. Tyson Brantley, and
285 lb. Brock Nobles.
“We knew it would
be tough for us to com
pete at 165, 175, and
190. We are still working
to get our football guys
back into the mix, and
Vidalia has studs at each
of those weight classes.
The guys we sent out
battled the best they
could. Gailan Wilds im
pressed me with his deci
sion loss to Deuce [High
tower], It shows he is
closer than many people
think. Overall, glad we
came away with the win,
but we have a lot to work
on,” said Allen of his
team’s performance.

Sealed bids will be received for the Storm Drainage and Street Improvements,
Hammonds Church Road at the Toombs County Courthouse, 100 Courthouse
Square, P.O. Box 112, Lyons, GA, 30436 until 11:00A.M. (Local Time), on
January 11, 2024, at which time they will be publicly opened and read.
The work under this Contract will consist generally of the following:
Roadway construction along an existing dirt road, including traffic
control, erosion control measures, and construction of ± of 38 LF of 24”
RCP, ± 204 LF of 36” RCP, & ± 352 LF of 18” RCP side drain & storm drain
pipe, ± 67 CY of concrete headwalls & aprons, ± 1.32 Lin. Miles of mainline
roadway grading, ±21,100 TN of graded aggregate base course, ± 2,450 TN
of 12.5 mm RAC Superpave Asphalt, signage, striping, and all other necessary
appurtenances for a complete job.
All work on the Project must be completed within 365 consecutive
calendar days of date of notice to proceed.
Bid shall be submitted on Bid Proposal Forms furnished for that purpose,
in accordance with the Contract Documents and the Plans and Specifications,
which are on file and may be reviewed at the office of the Chairman and
the office of Hofstadter and Associates, Inc., Consulting Engineers, 4571
Arkwright Road, Macon, Georgia 31210.
Copies of Bid Forms, Plans, Specifications and Contract Documents
may be obtained from Hofstadter and Associates, Inc., 4571 Arkwright Road,
Macon, Georgia 31210, upon deposit of $300.00 per set (.pdf format). No
refund will be made for returned documents.
No bid will be considered unless sealed and filed with Toombs County
prior to the time set forth above, and accompanied by a Bidder’s Bond, payable
to Toombs County, for 10 percent of the amount of the bid; to be forfeited as
liquidated damages in the event that the bid be accepted and the bidder fail
to enter promptly into a written contract and furnish the required Payment
Bond and Performance Bond and Insurance Certificates. Bids arriving after
the designated time will be returned unopened.
No bids shall be withdrawn for a period of 60 days after the opening of bids.
Toombs County reserves the right to reject any or all bids and to overlook
and/or disregard informalities or irregularities in the proposals.
