homes on a pre-determined
route.
•Attach reflective tape
to treat bags for added vis
ibility.
•Always walk, don’t
run.
•Don’t cross through
yards or alleys to get to the
next house n use sidewalks.
•Do not ride bicycles,
skateboards, or roller blades
when trick-or-treating.
•Make sure that masks
are properly vented and
don’t obstruct visibility.
•Buy only flame retar
dant costumes, or make a
special homemade costume
yourself.
•Be respectful of other
people’s property and don’t
mess with cars or Halloween
displays.
Parents can find a good
safety tip quiz on-line at
www.halloweenmagazine.
com. Try taking the quiz
with your kids to make sure
that everyone knows the
rules for Halloween safety.
Before Batman and Barbie
arrive at your home on
Halloween night, consider
the following precautions to
make your home as safe for
trick-or-treaters as possible:
•Make sure your driveway
and sidewalk are clear of
any tripping hazards.
•Keep lit jack-o-lanterns
off to the side of your porch
and away from children.
•Do not invite children
into your home unless they,
and their parents, are per
sonal friends.
•Do not distribute treats
that are unwrapped or appear
to have been tampered with
•Remember that small,
hard candy treats can be a
choking hazard for young
kids.
•If you are planning to
give treats to trick-or-treat
ers, keep your porch light
on.
•Be a good neighbor - help
watch out for suspicious
activity or persons in your
neighborhood and report
them to police.
And finally, the Winder
Police Department wants
to remind all drivers on
Halloween night to be espe
cially cautious when navi
gating vehicles through
neighborhoods and inhab
ited areas. Slow down, be
on the lookout for children
crossing the streets in front
of you, don’t talk on your
cell phone while driving,
turn the stereo down, and
remember that pedestrians
have the right-of-way.
•Call the police if you wit
ness any dangerous drivers
in your area or other sus
picious activity. Let’s all
work together to make sure
our kids have a safe and fun
Halloween night.

Children after the Fire celebrates anniversary
Ambulances return to service
The Children after the
Fire program coalition and
the Barrow County Fire and
Emergency Services recent
ly celebrated two mile
stones.
“This month marks the
third year anniversary of the
program,’’ said Lieutenant
Scott Dakin, the program
coordinator. “Plus this is the
first time we have been able
to get together and celebrate
the program being a final
ist in the International Fire
Chief’s Association Award
for Excellence.’’
The Children after the
Fire program is the first of
its kind in the nation. It was
designed to help children
in Barrow County that have
been affected by a fire. The
program works to minimize
the traumatic affects a fire
can have on a child. The
coalition also offers assis
tance to children that have
lost a family member to
a traumatic death through
the Children after Recent
Traumatic Events part of the
program.
Every child that enters the
program receives fire and/or
life safety education from
the Barrow County Fire and
Emergency Services, the
Barrow County Sheriff's
Office or the Winder Police
Department. The children
also receive specialized
counseling from The Tree
House to help deal with the
emotional trauma caused by
the event. The counseling
is offered to the family at
no charge due to donations
from citizens and business
es in Barrow County.
The Children after the Fire
program officially launched
in October 2005 and con
tinues to expand. Some of
the program additions that
are currently being explored

include developing a re
entry program to help chil
dren when they return to
school and a Family After
the Fire portion to teach
adults how to assist their
child after a traumatic inci
dent. Organizers are also
working on a program to
help children who have
witnessed a large-scale law
enforcement incident such
as a drug raid.
The Children after the Fire
program was a finalist in the
International Association
of Fire Chiefs Award for
Excellence in August.
“This international recog
nition is wonderful and well
deserved,” said Lt. Dakin.
“This coalition is doing
great things for the children
of Barrow County.”
Dakin also thanked Wal-
Mart and Bentley’s Home
Town Meats and Produce
for their support. For more

after the Fire or to make a

Dakin at 770-307-2987.
Several organizations are
involved in the Children
after the Fire Coalition
including Barrow County
Fire and Emergency
Services, The Tree House,
Georgia Firefighters Burn
Foundation, Winder Police
Department, Barrow County
Sheriff’s Office, Barrow
County Schools, Barrow
County Family Connections/
Communities in Schools and
the American Red Cross.
The Barrow County
Department of Fire and
Emergency Services announced
Friday that the ambulances pre
viously housed at Station 5 at
County Line and Station 1 in
Statham will return to service.
Med 5 returned to service
Saturday, Oct. 18 and Med 1
will be activated on Saturday,
Nov. 1, according to Barrow
County Fire and Emergency
Services Chief Robert Post.
These units were deacti
vated due to staffing and as
part of a year-long agreement
with ProCare, a private EMS
transport service. ProCare
was utilized to transport non
emergency patients to medi
cal facilities both inside and
outside of Barrow County.
The use of ProCare enabled
the department’s emergency
med units to remain in the
county to answer additional
calls for emergency service.
“The program was very suc
cessful and eliminated our
dependence on other juris
dictions to provide med units
when our units were tied up
on non-emergency transports
outside the county,” said Post.
The one year agreement with
ProCare began on October 15,
2007 and is scheduled to termi
nate on October 30, 2008.
During the past year, the
department has been able
to fill several vacant posi
tions including six that were
approved by commissioners
in the 2008 operating budget.
“This now allows us to place
these units back in service to
meet the needs of our citizens,”
Post said.
