Two Winder-Barrow High School students were arrested Oct. 29 after one of them allegedly handed a controlled substance to the other in view of school officials during a senior class meeting. Jesse Taylor Gentry, the son of a school employee, and Brandon Ward Kohler, a starting football player, both were charged with possession of a controlled sub stance and with carrying a weapon - a knife - on school property. According to the Winder Police Department, assistant princi pal Chuck Torbett and Athletic Director Justin Grant observed the students exchange something in a “very suspicious manner” during the meeting. The meeting report edly was about planning for gradu ation. As the officials walked toward the students, Kohler “took some thing from his pocket and dropped it on the floor,” the report states. Torbett retrieved four, round, white pills bearing an imprint of V2410. He reportedly found a fifth pill with the same imprint in Kohler’s jacket. Winder Police Cpl. Dustin Raster used a “2008 Drug Bible” to tentatively identify the pills as “Carisoprodal AKA somas,” a muscle relaxant. Torbett also allegedly found in Kohler’s pocket a “silver colored, lockable blade knife,” which vio lates the school system’s weapons policy. The report states Kohler ini tially said he and Gentry only had exchanged was bubble gum. He said he had the knife at school because he had “bailed some hay over the weekend and he forgot to Braselton police say a per son who was mistaken for a man — but is now a woman — is accused of forging checks at a grocery store. Employees at Publix on Ga. Hwy. 211 said a woman wrote a check for $500 three days prior to the Oct. 28 incident, in which she tried to write another $500 check. The woman was trying to leave in her vehicle when police arrived. An officer said the suspect was believed to be a woman, but was really a man. The suspect gave the offi cer identification showing him as a man who lived in Douglasville. An officer said the sus pect became nervous during questioning and couldn’t say exactly where he was alleg edly visiting friends in the area. Police said receipts from the store showed that almost identical items were pur chased by the suspect on Oct. 28 and were in the back seat of his vehicle. An officer also reviewed a surveillance video of the incidents. Once the suspect was arrested, police searched the vehicle and found a fraudu lent Georgia driver’s license. There were also several gift take it out of his jacket.” According to school officials, Kohler has been active in Future Farmers of America. During an initial search of Gentry on school grounds, noth ing illegal was found, though according to the police report, he appeared to be under the influence of a substance. He, too, claimed he and Kohler only had exchanged bubble gum. However, Kohler in a subse quent written statement to police said Gentry asked him if he want ed some pills that “would make him feel good.” Kohler said he accepted the pills and dropped them as he saw the school official approaching him. After the students were taken to the police department, they were searched again and a “silver col ored lockable blade knife” was found hanging from Gentry’s gym shorts string. Gentry said he had hidden the knife because he acci dentally brought it to school and did not want to get into trouble. The confiscated pills were sent to the GBI crime lab for identifi cation. In addition to criminal charges, the students face school disciplin ary action. Principal A1 Darby in said Tuesday he could not disclose the action taken by the school system. According to school system policy, possessing illegal chugs and knives on campus is a major “Class UT' violation of the school system’s code of conduct. Possible disciplinary actions include refer ral to a tribunal for expulsion, or transfer to an alternative school. Students also may waive their right cards, receipts and docu ments that were given to an investigator. The suspect said his name was legally changed to India Denise Jackson, 30, prior to the incidents. Jackson was charged with possession of altered identi fication documents and was taken to the Barrow County Detention Center. Police say the case remains under investigation and addi tional charges may be com ing. BRASELTON INCIDENTS The following inci dents were reported to the Braselton Police Department last week: •terroristic threats at a Ga. Hwy. 211 business, where a store owner said her two business partners used three blank checks and fraudant- ly used her Social Security number to order additional phone services. During two incidents, one of the business partners made several threat ening statements that scared the store owner. She later explained the situation to police. Officers later served criminal trespass warnings to the business partners. •items stolen from a vehicle at the Holiday Inn to a hearing before the tribunal, admit their offense, and agree to a punishment contained in the code of conduct. Though knives were found on both students, Darby said he does not believe many Winder-Barrow students carry them. He said he is more concerned about the preva lence of prescription drug abuse in American culture and thinks that danger needs to be addressed more forcefully. Darby said while it is important for school officials to be consistent in their punishment of such cases, it also is important to recognize that “kids are kids” and that they make mistakes. He said he has some discre tion in meting out punishment and looks at a number of factors in determining consequences. But he said he holds student leaders to a higher standard of conduct and that no one guilty of such offenses would be treated differently just because he could run a football. Though Darby would not con firm any information about either Gentry or Kohler, another source said Kohler has been removed from the Bulldoggs football team. According to school policy, pos sessing illegal drugs and knives on campus is a major “Class III” vio lation of the school system’s code of conduct. Disciplinary actions could include suspensions, proba tion, restitution, referral to a tribu nal for expulsion or transfer to an alternative school or loss of priv- iledges. Students also may waive their right to a hearing before the tribunal, admit their offense and agree to a punishment contained in a code of conduct. Express on Hwy. 211, where a woman said someone broke the windows of two vehicles. Two suitcases and a comput er printer from the vehicles were found on the ground next to one of the vehicles. It also appeared that several items had been gone through, police said. The woman said nothing was stolen from the vehicles. •runaway juvenile at a Hwy. 53 address. The 15-year-old juvenile was found the fol lowing day in Hoschton. •seizure of U.S. currency on 1-85, where police said the incident is under inves tigation and no information is available until the case is closed.
