Obituaries
Golden Deaton
Golden R. Deaton, 91, of
Winder, formerly of Hoschton,
died Thursday, November 13,
2008.
Born in Barrow County, he
was the son of the late Thomas
and Mattie Parks Deaton.
He was a longtime mem
ber of Sharon Baptist Church
and was a Deacon Emeritus.
He was a former employee
of Carwood Manufacturing
Company of Winder and was a
retiree of The Landress-Smith
Corporation of Hoschton.
Survivors include his wife
of 68 years, Opal Spence
Deaton, Winder; daughter,
Ann Cronic, Winder; son and
daughter-in-law, Wayne and
Marilyn Deaton, Xenia, Ill.;
grandchildren, Jason Scott and
Jarrod Scott, both of Winder,
Elizabeth Deaton, Katherine
Deaton and Tanya Feldhake,
Xenia, Ill.; and seven great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Saturday, November 15, in
the chapel of Carter Funeral
Home with the Rev. Le
Gibson officiating. Burial was
in the Sharon Baptist Church

Ga. 30548.

Bob McBrayer
Bob Stanley McBrayer, 56,
of Winder, died Wednesday,
November 12, 2008.
Born in Forsyth County, he
was the son of [UttHMlj
the late Denver ! ™j
Holden and
Jeanette Dixon
McBrayer. He was a veteran,
having served in the United
States Marines.
Survivors include a son
and daughter-in-law, Bob
and Brenda McBrayer,
Winder; sister, Sheila Moore,
Lawrenceville; and a brother,
Don McBrayer, Winder.
Graveside services were
held Saturday, November
15, in the Barrow Memorial
Gardens in Winder.

arrangements.

Elmer Shelton
Elmer Douglas Shelton,
61, of Bogart, died Saturday,
November 15, 2008, at his
residence.
He was born in Oconee
County on August 25, 1947,
the son of Fois McDaniel
Skelton and the late Douglas
Z. Shelton. He was a for
mer truck driver. Mr. Shelton
was preceded in death by a
son, William “Buck” Shelton;
daughters, Tawanna and
Sandra Shelton; and brothers,
James L. Shelton and Billy F.
Shelton.
Survivors in addition to
his mother, include a brother,
John Shelton; sisters, Betty
Sue Self, Brenda Sorrow and
Kathy Samples; three grand
daughters; and several nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services were
held Tuesday, November
18, in the chapel of Brown
Funeral Home with the Revs.
Curtis Hammond and Larry
Townsland officiating. Burial
was in Mars Hill Cemetery.

Ralph Bentley
Ralph Bentley, 93, of
Winder, died Sunday,
November 16, 2008.
Born in Walton County,
he was the son of the late
John and Elsie Bentley. He
was a member of Pleasant
Hill Presbyterian Church in
Statham and was retired from
Sunbrand Manufacturing
Company. He had also
served as the former mayor
of Statham. He was a Mason
and Shriner for 50 plus years
of Statham Lodge 634. Mr.
Bentley was preceded in
death by his wife, Belmaline
Bentley; a granddaughter,
Sherrie Bentley; brothers,
Morris, Lamar and Raymond
Bentley; and sisters, Ora Belle
Williams, Zelma Elder, Lona
Mae Wood and Ludi Brewer.
Survivors include sons and
daughters-in-law, Terry and
Patricia Bentley, Calvin and
Frances Bentley; step-daugh
ter and spouse, Diane and
Simuel Doster; five grandchil
dren; and seven great-grand
children.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday, November 19, in
the chapel of Smith Funeral
Home with the Rev. Brock
Burnett officiating. Burial was
in Barrow Memorial Gardens.

‘Chet’ Morrow
Chester W. “Chet” Morrow,
93, of Winder, died Thursday,
November 13, 2008.
He was born in Barrow
County, the son of the late
Tom and Decie Morrow. He
was a member of the First
United Methodist Church,
Braccus Class, and was retired
from Empire Manufacturing
Company.
Survivors include his wife,
Beatrice Bailey Morrow,
Winder; daughter and son-in-
law, Sarah and Billy Lovin,
Winder; and grandchild,
Pamela Lovin.
Funeral services were held
Saturday, November 15 at
Smith Memory Chapel with
the Rev. Terry Tippens offi
ciating. Burial was in Barrow
Memorial Gardens.

Thelma Solis
Thelma A. Solis, 57, of
Bogart, formerly of Central
Falls, R.I., died Monday,
November 10, 2008.
Born in Guatemala City, she
was the daughter of the late
Adrian and Santos Medrano
Solis. She moved to Bogart
two months ago, having
moved from Central Falls,
R.I., where she worked with
the A T Cross Pen Company.
Survivors include her hus
band, Hector Solis, Bogart;
sons, Michael and Anthony
Solis, both of Bogart; step
daughter, Angie Polly, Bogart;
two grandchildren; a sister,
Clara Molina, Rhode Island;
brothers, Eduerdo Molina,
Guatemala, Hugh Molina and
Edgar Molina, both of Rhode
Island.
Funeral services were held
Friday, November 14, at St.
Matthew’s Catholic Church in
Winder with the Rev. Jaime
Barona officiating. Burial was
in Barrow Memorial Gardens.

John Giles
John Blakely (J.B.) Giles,
Sr., 86, of Winterville, died
Wednesday, November 12,
2008, at Cobb Health Care in
Comer.
A native of Winder, he
was the son
of the late
Pink Lamar
and Katie
Myrt Griffith
Giles. He was a member
of Winterville First Baptist
Church, where he was a life
deacon. He graduated from
Winder High School in
1938, and was an officer in
the United States Air Force
Reserves. During World War
II, he flew B-17s and C-147s,
primarily on air-sea rescue
missions.
After his active duty ended,
he was a commercial pilot
briefly before he was ground
ed when one of his eyes was
scarred by a sickness. He
then was station manager for
Southern Airways in Athens,
was manager of Athens air
port, and became a Hertz-
Rent-a-Car licensee.
He was formerly a member
of the Winterville Lions Club,
the American Association
of Airport Executives, and
helped raise money for the
Athens YMCA facility built
in 1967.
He was active with the
Athens-Clarke County retired
employees association. He
learned to make furniture and
became an excellent crafts
man, enjoyed gardening, both
vegetable and ornamental,
and also enjoyed golf, loved
ones stated. Mr. Giles was
preceded in death by his wife,
Nell Giles.
Survivors include sons,
Blake Giles, Athens, Bill Giles,
Las Cruces, N.M.; sisters,
Helen Deaton, Charleston,
S.C., and Betty Ann Patrick,
Winder; grandchildren, John
Giles III, Lawrenceville,
Laura Garrett, Mt. Airy, and
Emily Giles, Royston; and a
great-grandson, Jack Garrett,
Mt. Airy.
Memorial services were
held Friday, November 14,
at Winterville First Baptist
Church with the Revs. Drs.
Jim Akins and Rick Standard
officiating.
Memorial contributions may
be made to Heart Ministries
of Lavonia, or a charity of
choice.

Cammie Evans
Cammie Hardy Evans,
57, of Winder, died Friday,
November 14, 2008.
A native of Barrow County,
she was the daughter of the
late William Hardy Sr. and
Jessie Phillips Hardy. She was
a seamstress for many years,
and held a great love for her
family, loved ones stated.
Survivors include her hus
band, Larry Evans, Winder;
sons, Jimmy and Austin
Evans, both of Winder; daugh
ter, Cammie Smallwood,
Winder; two grandchildren;
brothers and sisters, William
Hardy Jr., Leon Hardy, Moose
Hardy, and Randy Hardy, all
of Winder, Mary Brooks,
Alabama, Russell Hardy,
Statham, and Kay Marsingill,
Gainesville.
Funeral services were held
Monday, November 17, in
the chapel of Evans Funeral
Home. Burial was in Oconee
Baptist Church cemetery.

Runette Perkins
Runette Craft Perkins,
80, of Winder, died Sunday,
November 16, 2008.
A native and lifelong resi
dent of Barrow County, she
was the daughter of the late
Luther and Cassie Brock
Craft. She was a retiree of
Larry’s Easy Pay and was
a member of Whistleville
Christian Church.
Survivors include her
husband, Billy H. Perkins,
Winder; children, Debi
Belsom, Dacula, Mitchell
Wheeler, Winder, and David
Perkins, Auburn; five grand
children; and three great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday, November 18, in
the chapel of Carter Funeral
Home with the Rev. Ollie V.
Hayes officiating. Burial was
in Barrow Memorial Gardens.

Ricky Finch
Ricky Finch, 50, of Winder,
died Wednesday, November
12, 2008.
Born in Mt. Holly, N.J.,
he was the son of James and
Margaret Finch of Winder. He
was employed as a trim car
penter for home construction.
Survivors in addition to his
parents, include sons, Neil
Finch, Winder, and Justin
Finch, Grovetown; and a sis
ter, Linda Finch Germaine,
Winder.
The body was cremated and
no services were to be held.

Shirley
McDougald
Shirley McDougald, 68, of
Macon, formerly of Winder,
died Thursday, November 13,
2008.
She was the daughter of
the late Rev. Jack and Colena
Freeman Sauls and was
Baptist. She was an accoun
tant and was preceded in death
by a brother, Darrell Sauls.
Survivors are her husband,
Jerry McDougald, Macon; son
and daughter-in-law, Randy &
Sherry McDougald, Juliette;
brother, Dennis Sauls, Winder;
three grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was
held Sunday, November 16,
at Barrow Memorial Gardens
with the Rev. Harold Evans
officiating.

James Cox
James Reece Cox, 78, of
Benson, N.C., died Thursday,
November 13, 2008, at his
residence.
Born in Oconee County on
September 3, 1930, he was
the son of the late Fred E. and
Missouri Austin Cox.
Mr. Cox was the broth
er of Irene C. Morris and
Marguerite C. Mooney, both
of Winder.
Funeral services were held
Sunday, November 16, at
the Rose & Graham Funeral
Chapel in Benson, N.C., with
Brother Mack Fowler, the
Revs. Don Price and Billy
Cashwell officiating.

Obituaries will be published
for free in the Barrow Journal
if the person is, or has been in
the past, a resident of Barrow
County, works in Barrow
County now or did in the past,
or is a public official whose
district includes all or part of
Barrow County.
A photo of the deceased will
also be published for free if
the obituary meets the above
requirements.
If the deceased does not meet
the above requirements, but
has a close relative in Barrow
County, a shorter death notice
will be published for free.
Free obituaries may include
full name, age, location of
death, cause of death, where
bom, parents names, occupa
tion, memberships in churches,
civic clubs, etc., military ser
vice, names of survivors but
not the names of grandchil
dren, what funeral home is han
dling arrangements, date, time
and location of receiving, date
and time of funeral, location
of burial, officiating party and
pallbearers.
For all other obituaries that
do not meet the above require
ments, or for additional infor
mation beyond what’s includ
ed, a paid obituary may be
published for 15 cents per word
plus $5 for any photograph.
Obituaries are generally
submitted through a funeral
home or other official source
and edited by the newspaper.
Where families disagree on
the naming of stepchildren or
other matters, what is submit
ted by the funeral home will
be what is published. If other
family members or friends
wish to publish a paid obituary
with additional information,
they may do so by submitting
the information directly to the
newspaper and paying the 15
cents per word fee.
