HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
Lady Wildcats host Commerce Saturday
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
For Apalachee High School
varsity girls basketball coach
Michael Parks, “rebuilding"
may be the key word this
season.
Parks returns just three
players from last year's squad
as the Lady Wildcats pre
pare for a season in Region
8-AAAA.
“I believe our young tal
ent will develop into some
very good basketball play
ers," Parks said. “This group
of girls has worked extremely
HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
hard. They played in a local
league last spring then went
to two summer camps and
lifted weights on a regular
basis before competing in a
fall league.”
Parks believes all the pre
season preparation should
pay off for the young squad.
Senior Kelsey Montgomery
returns as the team’s lead
ing scorer and will direct the
offense at point guard. Senior
Ashley Phommaly is a much
improved player, the coach
said, and will also provide
valuable guard play.
“We will be very young,
but athletic," Parks said. “We
may have enough talent to
surprise some teams. I can’t
guarantee any wins, just the
fact that we will play very
hard.”
The Lady Wildcats have
an opportunity to ease into
the season, opening play
Saturday at home against
Commerce at 6 p.m. and not
returning to action until Dec.
2 with a road game against
Rockdale County.
Lady Bulldogs selected as All-Region
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
Winder-Barrow High School
softball players Julie Maloch
and Shelby Reed were recent
ly named to the All-Region
team for their efforts during
the 2008 season.
Maloch, a senior, compiled
a .408 batting average, with
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
a .577 on-base percentage for
coach LeAnn Mitchell this
fall. She scored 18 runs and
had 17 stolen bases while
driving in six runs.
In addition, Maloch had a
.995 fielding percentage to
help anchor the Lady Bulldogg
outfield.
Reed, a junior, batted .397
and had a .571 on-base per
centage. She also had a .651
slugging percentage while
driving in 19 runs.
Reed also scored five runs
while registering a .986 field
ing percentage from her catch
er position.
Jones, Shorter College qualify for playoffs
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
In just four seasons the Shorter College
Hawks have done what many felt was impos
sible: qualify for the playoffs.
Led by head coach Phil Jones, who directed
the Winder-Barrow High School program from
1984-1996, Shorter College was among the
teams chosen Sunday for the NAIA playoffs.
Jones and his team will face the University of
the Cumberlands in Kentucky.
“It’s hard to know where to start,” Jones said.
“It’s extremely exciting for us. These coaches
have meshed their lives with this program and
given so much. We’re excited to go from this
moment into the national playoffs.”
The NAIA national championship game will
actually be played on Shorter’s home field in
Rome. Barron Field was previously awarded
the championship game. Jones started the
Shorter College from scratch four years ago.
The Hawks closed out the regular season with
a 7-0 win against Bethel College.
