Apalachee High holds ‘Mix it up Day ’
By Haley Hasting
Special to the Barrow Journal
Apalachee High School got students out
meeting new people by declaring November
13, as “Mix It Up Day.”
The day has been added to the calendar
across the nation as a way to help students
cross social boundaries and make new friends.
“This is a fun environment,” said AHS stu
dent Morgan Scarboro.
As part of “Mix It Up Day,” students and
teachers were asked to eat with different peo
ple at lunch in hopes of making new friends.
Students were greeted at the table with a set
of questions to ask the people around them.
Questions about sports, politics, and future
plans encouraged students to think outside the
box.
“It makes me feel good seeing students hav
ing fun and meeting people they didn’t used to
know,” said Ms. Mortensen, an English teacher
at AHS, who organized the event.
Along with the new seating arrangements,
students danced the Jig and Cupid Shuffle.
Music that hinted at bringing everyone togeth
er spiced up the cafeteria while students met
new friends and laughed with old ones.
The entire lunch period resonated with
togetherness that is rarely found in a high
school cafeteria.
“It’s a great way to make new friends,” said
student Joseph Morris.
Thanks to organizations like Future Educators
of America, Student Council, and the Partner’s
Club, students were able to show their school
spirit and create new friendships. It was an
uplifting experience that made the day a little
brighter.
