FIRES & COURTS KITCHEN FIRE MONDAY Barrow County Fire and Emergency Services responded just after 8:30 a.m. Monday to another residential fire in the 300 block of Cedar Valley Trail in Winder. The fire was contained to the kitchen, but there was smoke damage throughout the one- story house. The cause of that fire also is under investigation. Photo by Lt. Scott Dakin Family displaced by fire A Barrow County fam ily was displaced from their home by a fire last Thursday, Nov. 20. No one was at home when the fire started just after 2:30 p.m. in the 1500 block of Cardinal Lane, according to a press release. When firefighters with the Barrow County Fire and Emergency Services arrived, the attic and roof of the two- story structure already were filled with smoke and flames. “Our crews started an initial defensive attack due to the collapse of a portion of the roof,” said Lt. Scott Dakin, the fire department’s public information officer. It took firefighters about 45 minutes to gain control of the fire. Although the flames were contained to the upper area of the house, the first floor had water and smoke damage, the press release states. American Red Cross rep resentatives assisted the fam ily of five at the scene. The fire department also offered the services of its Children After the Fire program, which provides counseling and other services to children after a fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Fire Investigation Unit. Teens arrested for robbing American Legion A trio of Winder teens were arrested Nov. 21 and charged with the armed robbery of the city’s American Legion Post 509. According to a Winder Police Department press release, two youths wearing ski masks entered the building on Capital Avenue at about 4:30 p.m. Friday. One of them brandished an older-looking handgun and demanded money. After handing over an undisclosed amount of cash, the victim followed the two youths outside and saw them join a third youth, who was running south. The victim called police and Officer Tim Harrell spotted three males walking on Midland Avenue who fit the victim’s description of the suspects.The officer stopped the teens and after noticing a ski mask hanging out of one of the suspects’ front pockets, had the robbery victim identify the suspects. Charged with armed robbery were Jamarcus Watson, 17; Donterio Butler, 17: and Jamarcus Smith, 18. Smith also was charged with one count of possession of marijuana, according to a press release. ST. Broad St. • Downtown Winder • 770-586-5899 ✓ Two sought in Winder home invasion Four people in residence at time Two men invaded a Wood Avenue apartment in Winder at gunpoint Nov. 22 and forced a boy and three women to the floor, according to an inci dent report at the Winder Police Department. No one was physically injured during the incident and the invaders left before police arrived. The incident began at about 7:40 p.m. when the boy, whose age was not dis closed, heard a knock at the door. When the boy opened the door, there were two males with handguns. As one pushed the door open, the boy fell to the floor. One assailant “put the gun in (the boy’s) face and was yelling at him,” the police report states. The gun was described as black. The other male, also bran dishing a black gun, then walked into the living room, confronted the women and ordered them to get down. He then looked around the room and went outside. Once both males had left, the boy telephoned his mother and she called police. The victims did not know their assailants. They said one man was black and wearing a gray jump suit. The other man was black and wore a black, fitted cap and a black hoodie with some red on it. He had an Afro hairstyle, witnesses said.
