Nine arrested for family violence
BY SUSAN NORMAN
Is the cold weather keeping people too close
for comfort? Or is it the pressure of the worsen
ing economy? Or maybe the stress of the holiday
season?
In the past week, nine men have been arrested
in Barrow County and its municipalities for vio
lating Georgia’s Family Violence Act, according
to information from the Barrow County Sheriff’s
Office. Six were arrested by sheriff’s deputies,
two were arrested by Winder police and one was
arrested by Statham police.
Also in recent days, the two crisis hotlines at
Peace Place have been ringing constantly.
“The past couple of days, we have had a lot
of calls on our crisis lines,” said Char Garrett,
executive director of the non-profit that serves
women and children who are victims of domes
tic violence. “They rang off the hook not just
from this county, but also from other counties. A
lot of shelters are full and we’re getting an over
flow of calls from outside our service area,”
Some of the female callers have blamed the
recent violence on economic conditions, but
Garrett said that’s just an excuse.
“It’s an excuse - alcohol, drugs and the econo
my,” she said. “That’s not really the reason why
men commit domestic violence most of the time.
They have a control problem.”

Driver says ‘homie ’ loaned him a gun
A man stopped for a traffic

said a pistol in his vehicle was
given by a “homie,” according
to an incident report.
A Braselton officer said he
noticed a green, leafy sub
stance on the driver’s shirt
during a traffic stop.
The driver admitted to
smoking marijuana earlier in
the day and gave permission
for the officer to search his
vehicle.
The officer found a loaded,
.45-caliber pistol that is issued
to government agencies in a
dry cleaners bag, according to
an incident report.
The driver said a “homie”
gave him the pistol, police
said.
Jackson County 911
couldn’t find any record of
the pistol’s serial number.
The 22-year-old driver said
he wasn’t a convicted felon,
but he had convictions as a
juvenile and none as an adult.
Braselton police said it was
difficult to determine the driv
er’s felony status during the
traffic stop. The driver gave
the pistol to an officer.
