Obituaries
Jack Armistead
Jack Armistead, 81,
of Winder, died Friday,
December 5, 2008.
A native and lifelong resi
dent of Barrow County, he
was the son of imimi —
the late Willie IBIS ~
and Rosa —
Lee Brewer
Armistead. He was a member
of the Winder First Baptist
Church, where he attended the
Brotherhood Sunday School
Class, was a retired plumb
er, and was a veteran having
served in the United States
Army as a paratrooper in the
11th Airborne Division. Mr.
Armistead was preceded in
death by his wife, Thelma
Hammond Armistead.
Survivors include a son,
Charles Armistead, Winder;
granddaughter and husband,
Angie and Chris McNeal,
Chestnut Mountain; grand
son, Brian Armistead, Atlanta;
great-grandchildren, Calem,
Meagan and Corin McNeal,
all of Chestnut Mountain; sis
ter-in-law, Darlene Milford,
Panama City, Fla.; and a num
ber of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held
Monday, December 8, in the
chapel of Carter Funeral Home
with Dr. John E. Talley offici
ating. Burial was in Barrow
Memorial Gardens.
Memorial contributions may
be made to the Winder First
Baptist Church, 625 Jefferson
Hwy., Winder, Ga. 30680.

arrangements.

Daphne Parker
Daphne M. Parker, 85, of
Statham, died Wednesday,
December 3, 2008.
Born in Jackson County,
she was the daughter of the
late Emory and Dora Nix
Mitchell. She was a member
of the New Pentecost United
Methodist Church for over 50
years plus, was a seamstress
for more than 30 years wor
king at Barrow Manufacturing,
Statham Garment and
Carwood Manufacturing com
panies. She later made and
sold arts and crafts, producing
many Raggedy Ann and Andy
dolls in which she took great
pride, and loved crocheting
and taught many others the
craft. She had been a resident
of Athens Heritage Nursing
Home since December 2007.
Mrs. Parker was preceded in
death by her husband of 57
years, Hugh Dorsey Parker.
Survivors include a son,
Teddy Parker, Winder;
daughter, Patricia Hendrix,
Statham; grandchildren.
Sherry and David Sims, Jeff
and Lisa Hendrix, Hayley
Parker and Betsy and Dr. Trey
Broome; and sister, Lurline
Mitchell, Oakwood.
Funeral services were
held Saturday, Dec. 6, at
Smith Memory Chapel,
with the Revs. Billy Pittman
and Gordon Thornton, and
Pastor Dave Fahner officia
ting. Burial was in Barrow
Memorial Gardens. Seven
great-grandchildren will serve
as honorary pallbearers, Josh
Hendrix, Drew Hendrix, Anna
Claire and Travis Ramey,
Kayla Hendrix, Parker Sims
and Parker Broome.
Memorial contributions

Church Building Fund, 832

Elizabeth Miller
Elizabeth Miller, 77, former
ly of Athens, died Wednesday,
November 26, 2008.
A native of Clarke County,
she was the daughter of the
late Ellison Lafayette and
Willie Jo Melton Dunaway.
Mrs. Miller was the moth
er of William Ellis Miller of
Statham.
Graveside services were
held Saturday, November 29.
at Evergreen Memorial Park.

Glenn Jones Jr.
Glenn (Hearn) Jones Jr., 79,
of Braselton died Wednesday,
December 3, 2008. Born in
Morgan County, he was the
son of the late Glenn Hearn
and Martha Carson Jones. He
was a member
of the New
Liberty United
Methodist
Church and
was retired from Gulf Oil
Corporation, where he drove a
tanker truck. He was a Justice
of Peace in the 1970s and
early 1980s for West Jackson
County. Mr. Jones was also a
mason and served in the Navy
and was in Korea. He was
preceded in death his wife,
Sara Clark Jones and a daugh
ter, Judy Jones.
Survivors include his fiance,
Marjorie Hulsey, Brasleton;
sons and daughters in law,
Glenn and Pam Jones and
Brad and Jennifer Jones, all
of Braselton; grandchildren,
Brian G. Jones, Kalyn Jones

Hobert Collins
Hobert Lee Collins, 63, of
Gainesville, died Tuesday,
December 2, 2008, at his resi
dence following a sudden ill
ness. He was the son of the
late Austin and Goldie Dover
Collins.
Mr. Collins was the father of
Becky Collins and Raymond
Stacey of Braselton.
Funeral services were held
Friday, December 5, in the
chapel of Memorial Park
Funeral Home with the Revs.

Irene Thomas
Irene Thomas, 94, of
Statham, died Wednesday,
December 3, 2008.
Born in Clarke County, she
was the daughter of the late
Upson P. and Beulah Bone
Aaron. She was a member
of Calvary Baptist Church,
and was retired from Statham
Garment Company. Mrs.
Thomas was preceded in death
by her husband, Arthur May
Thomas; and sons Tommy
and Jack Thomas.
Survivors include son,
Grover Thomas, Statham; sons
and daughters-in-law, William
Trammell and Patricia S.
Thomas, Monroe; Donald Lee
and Clara Thomas and Jerry
and Shirley J. Thomas, all of
Statham; daughter and son-in-
law, Peggy and Jimmy Garrett,
Statham; 16 grandchildren;
25 great-great-children; and
four great-great-grandchil
dren; sister, Alma Sexton,
Travis City, Mich.; brothers,
Euval Aaron, Athens; Chadler
Aaron, Statham; and Tommy
Aaron, Winder; and several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held
Saturday, December 6, at
Smith Memory Chapel, with
the Revs. Ronnie Healan and
Tim Aaron officiating. Burial
was in Calvary Baptist Church
Cemetery.

100, of Clarkesville, died
Saturday, December 6, 2008,
at a private healthcare facility,
following a brief illness.
Born in Habersham County
on February 1, 1908, she
was the daughter of the late
Edward and Sarah English
McConnell. Mrs. McAllister
was the mother of Marilyn and
Vann Wildes of Hoschton.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday, November 9, at
McGahee-Griffin & Stewart
Funeral Home.

Pauline’ Salyers
Edith “Pauline” Salyers, 66,
of Bethlehem, died Saturday,
December 6, 2008.
Born in Anniston, Ala.,
she was the daughter of the
late Fred and Nellie Whaley.
She attended Hebron Baptist
Church and was a gradua
te of Wellborn High School
in Anniston, Ala., where
she grew up before getting
married.
She retired from Internal
Revenue Service after 19
years. Mrs. Salyers was pre
ceded in death by siblings,
Fred Whaley Jr., Bobby Joe
Whaley and Ruby Whaley.
She loved life, family, friends
and especially her grandchil
dren, enjoyed reading, sewing,
traveling and caring for her
family, loved ones stated.
Survivors include her hus
band of 47 years, Cecil J.
Salyers, Bethlehem; son and
daughter-in-law, Greg and
Cindy Salyers, Prattville,
Ala.; daughter and son-in-
law, Mandy and Brian Byrd,
Monroe; grandchildren,
Jessica Jewell, Madeline
and Jeremiah “Pokey” Byrd,
David and Alex Martin;
brothers, Ronald Whaley,
Anniston, Ala.; sisters, Nellie
Ruth Champion and Christy
Saffold, both of Anniston,
Ala.; and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services will be
held Thursday, December 11,
at 2 p.m., at Smith Memory
Chapel with the Rev. Mac
Palmer officiating.
Burial will be in Barrow
Memorial Gardens.
