REPORTS ON CRIMES. WRECKS. FIRES & COURTS
Father drops child twice
on ER floor, arrested
A young Auburn father was arrested last week after dropping
his sick baby twice on the floor of the Gwinnett Medical Center
emergency room, refusing medical treatment for the infant and
leaving the facility.
Police say 22-year-old Jonathan Michael Casper of 86 Mt.
Moriah Road then put the nine-month-old girl back in his car
and while leaving the hospital property hit a curb, flattening a
tire, and attempted to drive home with only three tires on his
vehicle.
After the car became stranded in the early morning hours of
Dec. 12, a family friend retrieved the sleeping baby and took
her home to her mother. An Auburn officer then followed for
about three miles groove marks created by the tireless rim of
Casper’s vehicle.
When the officer found the man, he was attempting to get his
car back onto Mt. Moriah Road near Etheridge Road.
Sgt. Derek Ulrich stated in his report of the incident that
Casper admitted having taken two prescribed Xanax pills prior
to taking his daughter to the hospital to be seen for bronchitis.
The sergeant also removed from Casper’s pocket two suspected
marijuana pipes and two unmarked containers containing pills
that appeared to be alprazolam and oxycodone. Another offi
cer found in the car a prescription for alprazolam in Casper’s
name.
Casper was charged with possession of oxycodone, endanger-
ment of a child under the age of 14, reckless driving, driving
under the influence of drugs, not keeping his prescription drugs
in their original container, possession of drug-related materials,
and operating an unsafe vehicle.
Later that day in a separate incident, a 29-year-old Auburn
mother was discovered passed out in her home from a drug
overdose while her baby was crying nearby.
A neighbor called police to check on the occupants of the
home on River Trace after finding the woman’s dog outside the
back yard, seeing the screaming baby through the glass front
door but being unable to get anyone to respond to 45 minutes
of knocking.
Emergency medical personnel entered the home through the
back door and found the baby’s mother passed out in a kneeling
position with her head pressed up against kitchen cabinet doors.
Marijuana and Loratab pills were scattered across the kitchen
table, according to the police incident report.
After being awakened, the woman refused to be transported to
the hospital. The Department of Family and Children Services
was notified and the baby was turned over to grandparents. The
baby’s mother was not immediately arrested, but Auburn police
are continuing their investigation.
Winder marine charged in fatal N .C. crash
A 22-year-old Marine from
Winder has been arrested
in connection with a hit-
and-run accident that killed
a disabled North Carolina
woman who was the mother
of another Marine.
The arrest came hours after
Barrow County Sheriff’s
deputies recovered at a local
address the vehicle that
allegedly struck the woman.
Barrow County Sheriff’s
Major Murray Kogod said
the vehicle was recovered
from the residence of the
Marine’s father.
Barrow deputies at 6:07
a.m. on Dec. 8 went to 228
Pleasant Hill Church Road
to look for a black or dark
Chevrolet truck with front-
end damage, according to
a sheriff’s office incident
report.
Deputies locat
ed a black, 1999
ChevroletSilverado
truck backed under
a carport. Before
towing the truck to
a secure impound
lot, the tow truck
driver “had to
secure the hood so
it would not fly up while in
transport,” the report states.
Later that day, the
Jacksonville Police
Department announced the
arrest of Cpl. Joseph William
Kirkland Jr. who was charged
with involuntary manslaugh
ter, felony hit and run, care
less and reckless driving,
having no insurance, and
speeding. He was booked
into the Onslow County Jail
under a $155,000 secured
bond.
The arrest came
six days after a
Jacksonville police
officer on routine
patrol at 2:55 a.m.
Dec. 2 discov
ered the body of a
woman lying in a
highway.
The woman was
identified as Barbara Jean
Elwell, 41, of Jacksonville.
Police apparently found near
her body a gold Chevrolet
emblem from the front grill of
the vehicle believed to have
struck her. The department
asked for the public’s help in
finding either a 1999-2002
Chevrolet Silverado or a
2000-2003 Chevrolet Tahoe
or Suburban.
When information from
the public led to Kirkland,
the Jacksonville police con
tacted the Barrow County
Sheriff’s Office for assis
tance in locating the truck.
Sgt. Chuck James of the
Jacksonville (N.C.) Police
Department in an interview
last week said the victim
was disabled and that she
was the mother of a U.S.
Marine. She was last seen
near a motel and was on foot
at the time of the accident.
Kirkland is a landing sup
port specialist from Landing
Support Company, Combat
Logistics Regiment 27, 2nd
Marine Logistics Group that
is based at Camp Lejeune.
The incident happened just
a month after the young
Marine was featured promi
nently in a U.S. Department
of Defense article about a
patch worn on his compa
ny’s uniforms.

Former deputy pleads to 20 counts of child exploitation
BY SUSAN NORMAN
A former Barrow County
Sheriff’s deputy has pleaded
guilty to 20 counts of sexual
exploitation of children.
The 20 counts represented
some 20,000 graphic imag
es discovered on the home
computer of 33-year-old
Jason David Gaub, while he
was employed as a patrol
deputy, said Deborah L.
Wilbanks, chief deputy dis
trict attorney, in an interview
last week.
“The case was more than a
case of someone looking at
a few images inadvertently,”
she said.
The photographs down
loaded from the Internet
were of children engaged in
sex acts with adults and with
other children, according to
the grand jury’s April 11
indictment.
The children were not from
Barrow County, Wilbanks
said.
However, someone in
September reported seeing
Gaub working at a local
business that provided pony
rides for children, accord
ing to a Sept. 16 motion
to revoke Gaub’s $50,000
bond.
Gaub on Nov. 25 pleaded
guilty to the sexual exploita
tion of children.
He was sentenced to 15
years, with three to be served
in prison and 12 on proba
tion. He also was ordered to
pay a fine of $5,000 and will
have to follow an extensive
list of conditions restricting
his access to children and to
the Internet.
Wilbanks said her office
recommended that Gaub
receive a much stiffer sen
tence.
“This was not a negotiated
plea agreement,” she said.
Gaub was arrested in
October 2007 as part of a
federal investigation into
child pornography rings.
When the sheriff’s office
was notified that Gaub was a
suspect, the Georgia Bureau
of Investigations became
involved, Wilbanks said.
