this season.

The Winder-Barrow High
School Lady Bulldoggs put
win No. 6 in the record book
last Friday with a 44-33 vic
tory against Flowery Branch
at home.
Mimi Hill paced the WBHS
with 16 points as the Lady
Bulldoggs benefited from a
strong third quarter.
Lauren Hamel added nine
points for coach Brenda Hill's
team while Brittany Witt fin
ished with six points.
The loss helped the team
recover from a disappoint
ing 59-51 setback to Heritage
three days earlier. The Lady
Bulldoggs had defeated the
Lady Patriots during a tourna
ment earlier in the season but
Heritage earned a little pay
back during this meeting.
Shant Finch finished with
eight points for WBHS while
Hamel added six.
Through nine games of the
2008-09 season Coach Hill
said she is pleased with where
her team is.
“There are a couple of more
games we could have won but
we didn’t have enough experi
ence in those types of situa
tions,” she said. “The girls are
working hard and listening to
the coaches. Our confidence
level is very high right now.
each game is a learning expe
rience. We will know how to
better handle those situations
the next time.”
The team is already close
to matching last season's win
total of nine, something which
is encouraging for Coach Hill
and the players.
“We are just trying to con
centrate on one game at a
time and not overlooking any
opponent,” she said.
The Lady Doggs will com
pete in a holiday tournament at
St. Pius High School starting
Saturday against St. Mary's of
New Orleans at 1:30 p.m.
AREA RACING
Local racers have time tough at Snowball
BY BRANDON REED
It was a rough weekend
for local racers who made
the trek to Pensacola, Fla. to
compete in the 41st annual
Snowball Derby weekend at
Five Flags Speedway.
In Sunday’s Snowball
Derby, Pendergrass’ Paul
Kelley was the highest fin
isher from our area. Kelley
started 22nd, and finished
10th after being involved in
a multi-car accident on lap
263 of the 300 lap race.
Jefferson’s Joey Senter
finished 23rd, several laps
down after being involved
in a two car accident 22 laps
into the event.
Former Jefferson resident
Ryan Crane came into the
event with high hopes, but
had problems during the
race.
His woes started with a
spin on lap 15 after he tan
gled with the car of Shane
Sieg while racing for fifth.
Crane was able to continue,
but was involved in another
accident on lap 72, along
with Michigan racer Tim
Curry. Crane was left with
heavy damage to the right
front of his car, and was
eliminated from the event.
He was credited with a 37th
place finish.
North Carolina racer Brian
Ickler was flagged the win
ner of the prestigious event,
but was disqualified in post
race tech for having an ille
gally placed electric brake
blower.
That gave the win to
Alabama’s Augie Grill, his
second Snowball Derby vic
tory of his career. It also
made Grill the second driver
in history to win back-to-
back events.
Things went a little better
for local racers who took
part in Saturday night’s
Snowflake 100 Pro Late
Model event at Five Flags.
Ryan Crane, who won the
event in 2007, held the
lead with five laps remain
ing when Brandon Carlson
made a late pass for the win.
Crane would hold on for a
second place finish.
Paul Kelley placed fourth
after coming back from a
mid-race spin.
Hoschton’s Jimmy
Garmon finished 22nd after
being caught up in a seven
car accident on lap 54.
Commerce driver Taylor
Satterfield had a rough night
from the start after being
caught up in a ten-car pile-
up on the third lap.
Satterfield retuned to the
track, but would complete
only 22 laps. He was credit
ed with a 33rd place finish.

Wildcats even record with Saturday win

As the first half of the
2008-09 season nears an end,
Apalachee High School boys
basketball coach Kevin Morris
sees progress being made.
“We are getting better,” the
coach said. “Injuries have
been a factor for us but it has
also allowed us to create extra
depth by getting more guys
playing time.”
The Wildcats evened their
record at 4-4 following a 54-42
win against non-region foe
Commerce Saturday. Sixteen
points from Chaun Gresham
and 14 points, including four
three-pointers, from Dennis
Whitley helped AHS to the
win.
The Wildcats split their
region games last week
dropped a close 81-75 game
to Loganville at home Friday
while defeating Monroe Area
62-56 last Tuesday.
Despite falling to Loganville,
Morris said it was one of his
team's better games of the
season.
A poor night from the foul
line, however, (19-of-37)
would prove costly.
“We actually led with two
minutes left,” Morris said.
“However, once we got behind
they made their free throws.”
The AHS coach hopes his
team being forced to deal with
injuries may turn into a posi
tive before the season is over.
“We’ve have to move some
people around,” Morris said.
“John Ansley for one has
played some at point guard.
Other people are playing
where they normally wouldn't
have. We are making some
mistakes but I think we are
learning from them.”
The Wildcat coach was busy
Sunday watching video and
putting together his practice
plan for Monday.
AHS does not play again
until Saturday but practice
sessions are scheduled for
each day this week except for
Wednesday and Thursday.
“We are working on the
finer details because they are
hurting us in some games,”
Morris said.
“A Loganville player had 34
points and we weren't doing
one little detail which would
have prevented that. We aren't
going to play a perfect game
but we have to limit our mis
takes.”
