Success continued from IB
“They made a few plays at
the end and we simply ran
out of time,” Connell said.
The game was close
throughout with the
Bulldoggs trailing 34-32 at
the break but holding a 52-48
lead after the third quarter.
“We haven’t been able
to finish down the stretch,”
Connell said. “We made
some bad decisions late
against Griffin.”
WBHS was also involved
in a close game with Flowery
Branch Friday night before
eventually falling 67-55.
Henry Maxey paced the
team Friday with 16 points
including three baskets from
three-point range.
Thurmond finished with 12
while Trent Demeritte scored
11. D.J. Butler did not play
Friday night after suffering
an injury in last Tuesday’s
game against Heritage, a
61-58 loss.
“We are playing some
good teams,” Connell said.
“Hopefully it will pay off
down the road.”
The Bulldoggs were
Sheppard and Moore are
both undefeated this season.
Aaron Segars (135) and
Chris Hamrick (189) took sec
ond place at the tournament. It
was the first finals for Segars
who fell to the eventual tour
nament MVP.
Hamrick also made a strong
showing in his finals match
before taking runner-up.
A number of other AHS
wrestlers recorded wins help
ing the team finish sixth over
scheduled to finish play in
the DeKalb County Classic
Monday and Tuesday and will
return to action next Friday
all. Aaron Roberts, Michael
Newman, Cody Segars, Jeff
Haneney and Tony Hoard all
earned wins.
Freshman Blaze Shaw con
tinues to hold the team lead
in pins despite the fact he is
wrestling up in weight class.
Shaw held two wins by pin at
Morgan County.
“Our older wrestlers are
doing a great job in help
ing our younger wrestlers,
Stoudenmire said. “We are
against Flowery Branch on
the road. That game will
begin the 2009 portion of the
schedule.
getting plenty of mat time.”
AHS will compete in the
Winder-Barrow High School
George Thompson Memorial
Tournament Friday and
Saturday, an event the Wildcat
coach says will be “tough.”
“We are definitely getting
as much mat time as we can,”
Stoudenmire said. “Hopefully,
that will make all the differ
ence in the world. We have
some wrestlers who are on the
edge of being promising.”
A fast start also benefited
AHS against Monroe Area
earlier in the week. The Lady
Wildcats led 21-6 after the
first quarter.
“We jumped out early and
never looked back,” Parks
said. “We came out with a lot
of pressure.”
AHS continued to lead
34-22 at halftime.
“We played well,” Parks
said. “We entered the game
with a great deal of confi
dence. We had faced Monroe
in summer league play.”
Mayweather led the
team with 15 points while
Montgomery added 12.
Saboyce Shelton finished with
10.
Medlam, making her first
start of the season, also drew
the praise of her coach.
“She played the entire way,”
Parks said of the junior. “She
is a player I trust on the court.
She might not score 20 points
but she has a calming influ
ence on our team. She is not
going to make mistakes that
hurt you.”
The only setback for the
Lady Wildcats last week was
a 62-33 loss to Loganville, a
team Parks says a legitimate
Top 10 team.
“They are just so much
more advanced skill-wise than
us,” the coach said. “They
have tremendous athletes.”
AHS was only down nine
at halftime before the Lady
Red Devils pulled away in
the second half. Mayweather
finished with 15 .
“She wanted the basketball,”
the coach said. “We wanted to
make something happen. That
is impressive for a freshman.”
Overall, however, it was a
solid week for the AHS Lady
Wildcats.
“It was the first time we’ve
beaten Monroe and it was
also our first region win of the
season,” Parks said.
The Lady Wildcats will
compete in the Oconee
County High School
Christmas Tournament begin
ning Saturday against Towers
at 12:30 p.m.
