The game was close throughout with the Bulldoggs trailing 34-32 at the break but holding a 52-48 lead after the third quarter. “We haven’t been able to finish down the stretch,” Connell said. “We made some bad decisions late against Griffin.” WBHS was also involved in a close game with Flowery Branch Friday night before eventually falling 67-55. Henry Maxey paced the team Friday with 16 points including three baskets from three-point range. Thurmond finished with 12 while Trent Demeritte scored 11. D.J. Butler did not play Friday night after suffering an injury in last Tuesday’s game against Heritage, a 61-58 loss. “We are playing some good teams,” Connell said. “Hopefully it will pay off down the road.” The Bulldoggs were Sheppard and Moore are both undefeated this season. Aaron Segars (135) and Chris Hamrick (189) took sec ond place at the tournament. It was the first finals for Segars who fell to the eventual tour nament MVP. Hamrick also made a strong showing in his finals match before taking runner-up. A number of other AHS wrestlers recorded wins help ing the team finish sixth over scheduled to finish play in the DeKalb County Classic Monday and Tuesday and will return to action next Friday all. Aaron Roberts, Michael Newman, Cody Segars, Jeff Haneney and Tony Hoard all earned wins. Freshman Blaze Shaw con tinues to hold the team lead in pins despite the fact he is wrestling up in weight class. That game will begin the 2009 portion of the schedule. getting plenty of mat time.” AHS will compete in the Winder-Barrow High School George Thompson Memorial Tournament Friday and Saturday, an event the Wildcat coach says will be “tough.” “We are definitely getting as much mat time as we can,” Stoudenmire said. “Hopefully, that will make all the differ ence in the world. We have some wrestlers who are on the edge of being promising.” A fast start also benefited AHS against Monroe Area earlier in the week. The Lady Wildcats led 21-6 after the first quarter. “We jumped out early and never looked back,” Parks said. “We came out with a lot of pressure.” AHS continued to lead 34-22 at halftime. “We played well,” Parks said. “We entered the game with a great deal of confi dence. We had faced Monroe in summer league play.” Mayweather led the team with 15 points while Montgomery added 12. Saboyce Shelton finished with 10. Medlam, making her first start of the season, also drew the praise of her coach. “She played the entire way,” Parks said of the junior. “She is a player I trust on the court. She might not score 20 points but she has a calming influ ence on our team. She is not going to make mistakes that hurt you.” The only setback for the Lady Wildcats last week was a 62-33 loss to Loganville, a team Parks says a legitimate Top 10 team. “They are just so much more advanced skill-wise than us,” the coach said. “They have tremendous athletes.” AHS was only down nine at halftime before the Lady Red Devils pulled away in the second half. Mayweather finished with 15 . “She wanted the basketball,” the coach said. “We wanted to make something happen. That is impressive for a freshman.” Overall, however, it was a solid week for the AHS Lady Wildcats. “It was the first time we’ve beaten Monroe and it was also our first region win of the season,” Parks said.
