WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2008 BARROW JOURNAL PAGE 5B OLDER STUDENTS VISIT Students from Winder-Barrow High School recently spent a day at Holsenbeck Elementary School reading to students and assisting in the classrooms. Holsenbeck students were very excited to have “big boys and girls” come to there school and read to them. The high school students selected books from the media center and were given a lesson from Karen Gamblin, media specialist, on howto read children’s book in an engaging manner. Several of the high school students read their books to students in French and Spanish to the children’s delight. GED orientation schedule set Lanier Tech’s Winder cam pus is offering GED classes free of charge during the first quarter of 2009. To attend the free classes, persons must attend an ori entation class, which is also free. For those who are 19 or younger, it is required to stop by the Lanier Tech cam pus in Winder and obtain an orientation package. Once the information contained in the package is completed, a spot will be reserved at the next GED orientation class. For those age 20 years and older, a reservation is not required. They may simply show up on the first day. After orientation, students may be taking classes at either the Winder campus or in Auburn. The Winder Library is located at 189 Bellview Street near Russell Middle School. Jackson EMC now taking applications for scholarships Jackson Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) is taking applications for three scholarship awards based on academic ability, faculty recommendations and financial need. Winners will be chosen by a scholarship committee, which will carefu lly review each application for the most qualified candidates. The Walter Harrison Scholarship is named for a leader in the state and natio nal electric cooperative move ments. Several of these $1,000 scholarships are awarded sta tewide to undergraduate stu dents enrolled in or accepted by a Georgia college, univer sity or technical school. Jackson EMC also offers two additional $1,000 awards through the A.T. Sharpton Scholarship program, named in honor of a late chairman of the Jackson EMC Board of Directors. The A.T. Sharpton- Gainesville State College Award is available exclusively to students planning to attend Gainesville State College. Financial need is a primary consideration, but judges will also consider academic ave rage, standardized test scores and/or faculty recommenda tions. The A.T. Sharpton Unrestricted Scholarship Award is funded through the same trust and is available to high school seniors who have already been accepted to college, or students who are currently enrolled in an accre dited college, university or technical college. Applicants may be full or part-time stu dents at the undergraduate or graduate level in any accredi ted two or four-year college or university in the nation. Financial need, academic ave rage, standardized test scores and/or faculty recommenda tions are all considered by the judges. Scholarship recipients must be a customer of Jackson EMC or the son or daughter of a customer, and they must also be a resident of the home served by Jackson EMC. Students interested in applying for any or all of these scholarships should contact their area high-school gui dance counselors or complete the application online at the Jackson EMC Web site.
