Harper
Agnes Elizabeth Harper,
77, of Jefferson, formerly
of Charleston, W.Va., died
Wednesday, December 17,
2008.
Born on February 4, 1931,
she was the daughter of the
late Joseph
and Ada-Lee
Senters. She
was a mother

Harper was

death by her husband, Herbert
Henry Harper; and children,
Betty Jo McCune and Bobby
Joe Harper.
Mrs. Harper was the mother
of George and Joy Harper of
Winder; and grandmother of
Ricky and Jessica Gordon of
Statham.
Funeral services will be
held in West Virginia at Hafer
Funeral Home Chapel in
Elknew, W.Va., with the Rev.
Ken Brewer officiating.

Mary Frances
Jackson
Mary Frances Jackson,
83, of Winder, died Sunday,
December 7, 2008, at Winder
Health Care.
Born on June 5, 1925, she
lived her entire life in Winder,
attending Winder public
schools. She worked and
retired from the laundry and
after retirement, worked at the
Clothes Closet helping others.
She was a member of White
Oak Springs Baptist Church.
Miss Jackson was preceded in
death by her mother, Everlene;
a son; sister; and niece.
Survivors include chil
dren, Elaine and Larry; sis
ter, Rhunette Smith, Detroit,
Mich.; seven grandchildren;
17 great-grandchildren; two
nieces; three nephews; one
great-niece; two great-neph
ews; and a host of other rela
tives and close friends.
Funeral services were held
Saturday, December 13, at
White Oak Springs Baptist
Church with the Rev. Alfred
Hazel officiating. Burial was
in Rose Hill Cemetery.

arrangements.

George Keith
George M. Keith, 65, of
Hoschton, died Friday,
December 19, 2008.
A native of Forsyth County,
he was the son of the late J.
L. and Mary Gunter Keith.
He was preceded in death
by a brother, James Keith
and was a retiree of Lawson
Heating and Air Conditioning
of Gainesville. Mr. Keith was
Baptist.
Survivors include his wife,
Carol Brewer Keith; daugh
ter, Sherri Dunn; grandson,
Shawn Dunn; and brother,
Robert Keith, all of Winder:
sisters, Nell Sellers, Moultrie,
Tammy Martin, Texas, and
Betty Wilkerson, Winder.

Sunday, December 21, from
the Chapel of Carter Funeral
Home with the Rev. Jerry
Flanigan officiating. Burial
was in Barrow Memorial
Gardens.

Ruth Wright
Ruth Chancey Wright, 93,
of Winder, died Tuesday,
December 16, 2008.
Born in Stephens County,
she was the daughter of the late
John B. and Elizabeth Brodes
Royster. She was a member of
Carter Hill Christian Church.
Mrs. Wright was preceded in
death by her husband, Wayne
Wright; and a son, Harold
Chancey.
Survivors include grandchil
dren, Dr. Lisa Fay Fowlkes,
Bogart, and Bobby Smith
Chancey, Winder; five great
grandchildren; and a brother,
John ‘"Tuny” Royster, Winder.
Funeral services were held
Friday, December 19, at
Smith Memory Chapel with
Ray Fumea, Minister, officiat
ing. Burial was in Carter Hill
Christian Church cemetery.

Junior Bradford
Junior E. Bradford, 79,
of Winder, died Sunday,
December 21, 2008. A native
of Gwinnett County, he was
the son of the late Willie J.
and Omie Davis Bradford.
He was preceded in death by
his first wife, Betty Gower
Bradford and a brother, John
Bradford. Mr. Bradford was
a member of Morningside
Baptist Church and was a
retiree of General Motors.
Survivors include his wife,
Wilma Porter Bradford,

Joe “Bug” Darlin Johnson
Jr., 82, of Statham, died
Saturday, December 20, 2008.
Born in Gwinnett County,
he was the son of the late
Mr. and Mrs.
Joe Darlin and || lifl ■

Johnson. Mr.
Johnson was a
member of Bethesda Baptist
Church and was a World War
II Army Veteran.
Survivors include his wife,
Joyce Brumbelow Johnson,
Statham; sons, Johnny, Tommy
and Lonnie Johnson, all of
Lawrenceville; daughters,
Janice Casper, Lawrenceville,
Peggy Page, Carnesville,
Jackie Knight, Statham and
Jeannie Alasadi, Augusta;
fourteen grandchildren and
twelve great-grandchildren;
brother, James Johnson,
Lawrenceville; sisters,
Jeannette Holcomb, Geneva
Masters, Shirley Leech and
Mildred Vanderford, all of
Lawrenceville; and several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held,
Monday, December 22, at
Smith Memory Chapel with
Mr. Bruce Cox and Mrs. Elaine
Corbin officiating. Burial was
in Barrow Memorial Gardens.

Charles Beaty
Charles Randolph Beaty,
87, of Winder, died Tuesday,
December 16, 2008, at his
residence.
A native of Barrow County,
he was the son of the late
Charles Hammond and Carrie
Beaty. Mr. Beaty was preced
ed in death by his wife of 48
years, Mildred
Stroud Beaty;
and a brother,
Ivan Davis. He
graduated from
the University of Georgia and
was an avid Bulldog fan. For
40 years, his primary career
was as a sales and architec
tural consultant working for
National Gypsum Company
of Charlotte, N.C. He was a
member of the First Christian
Church of Winder and a mem
ber of Winder Noon Lions
Club.
He was an original member
of the 82nd Airborne Division
of the United States Army
and an original member of
the 505 Parachute Infantry
Regiment. He fought in North
Africa, made combat jumps
into Sicily and Naples, Italy,
and fought from Naples into
Rome. Beaty, along with the
rest of the 82nd Airborne,
jumped into Normandy the
night before D-Day, June 6,
1944. He was captured by the
German forces and spent 11
months as a prisoner of war
before being freed in Southern
Germany. He was awarded
three bronze stars for valor in
combat.
Survivors include a daugh
ter and son-in-law, Sally
and William H. Gardner Jr.,
Winder; sons and daughters-
in-law, Charles M. (Mac) and
Kathy Beaty, Greenville, S.C.,
Chris K. and Charlotte Beaty;
daughter-in-law, Robin Beaty,
Flowery Branch; grandchil
dren, Michael Gardner, Carrie
Johnson, Melissa Edge,
Matthew, Allison and Rand
Beaty; and a great-grandchild,
Addie Johnson.
A celebration of life was
held Friday, December 19, at
the First Christian Church,
275 North 5th Ave., Winder.
Memorial contributions may
be made to the First Christian
Church of Winder.

Marie Conner
Marie Townsend Conner,
87, of Statham, died Friday,
December 12, 2008.
A native of Athens, she
was the daughter of the late
George A. and Madeline
Roche Townsend. She
received her BS and Master’s
degrees from the University
of Georgia. She worked at the
Garfield Memorial Hospital
in Washington, DC, and also
as a dietician at the Veterans
Administration Hospital in
Dublin before returning to
the University of Georgia in
the same capacity. She retired
from the University of Georgia
in 1974 and did many years
of volunteering at St. Mary’s
Hospital in Athens. She was
also a very active member of
St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Mrs. Conner was preceded in
death by her husband, John
Sidney Conner.
Survivors include a daugh
ter, Madelyn Conner Kreiger,
Statham; and grandchildren,
Maddi and Conner Kreiger;
brothers and sisters-in-
law, George A. and Freda
Townsend and William R.
and Sue Townsend; brother,
Eugene A. Townsend; and
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held
Monday, December 15, at St.

Wando Louis “Russ”
Colombo, 91, of Jefferson,
died Wednesday, December
17, 2008.
Born on June 6, 1917, in
New Hampshire, he was
the son of the late Batista
and Lisa Colombo. He was
a former Superintendent of
the Jefferson
City School
System
and was
the former
Principal of
the Lithonia
Community
Schools. He
was a veteran, having served
during World War II.
Survivors include his wife,
Clarice Dekle Colombo,
Jefferson; and a daughter,
Claire Colombo, Athens.
Graveside services will be
held Sunday, December 28, at
2 p.m., in the Ochlochnee City
Cemetery in Ochlochnee with
Dr. Robert Ackerman officiat
ing.

David Motte
David M. Motte Jr., 66,
of Cleveland, died Monday,
December 15, 2008, at his res
idence following an extend
ed illness. Born on January
14, 1942, in New Hanover
County, N.C., he was the son
of the late David Mac and
Annie Lila Covil Motte.
Mr. Motte was the step
father of Shelia Digiacomo of
Braselton.

Friday, December 19, at The
Wood Mortuary Chapel with
the Rev. Bud Griffith officiat

lished for free in the Barrow
Journal if the person is,
or has been in the past, a
resident of Barrow County,
works in Barrow County
now or did in the past, or is a
public official whose district
includes ah or part of Barrow
County.
A photo of the deceased
will also be published for
free if the obituary meets the
above requirements.
If the deceased does not
meet the above requirements,
but has a close relative in
Barrow County, a shorter
death notice will be pub
lished for free.
Free obituaries may
include full name, age, loca
tion of death, cause of death,
where bom, parents names,
occupation, memberships in
churches, civic clubs, etc.,
military service, names of
survivors but not the names
of grandchildren, what funer
al home is handling arrange
ments, date, time and loca
tion of receiving, date and
time of funeral, location of
burial, officiating party and
pallbearers.
For all other obituaries
that do not meet the above
requirements, or for addi
tional information beyond
what’s included, a paid obit
uary may be published for
15 cents per word plus $5 for
any photograph.
Obituaries are generally
submitted through a funeral
home or other official source
and edited by the newspaper.
Where families disagree on
the naming of stepchildren
or other matters, what is sub
mitted by the funeral home
will be what is published.
If other family members
or friends wish to publish a
paid obituary with additional
information, they may do so
by submitting the informa
tion directly to the newspa
per and paying the 15 cents
per word fee.
