First RALLY held to promote reading
The Winder-Barrow High
School Reading Committee
sponsored their first month
ly R.A.L.L.Y. (Read and
Advertise the Love of
Literature to Youth) event
recently at Holsenbeck
Elementary School.
Co-chair Elaine Wilder
said, “Our committee wants
to encourage our students to
utilize their SSR (Sustained
Silent Reading) time daily,
so we are always looking for
good ‘incentives’ ideas. This
was a way to reward our high
school students, give them
the opportunity to share their
love of reading with young
er children, and allowed the
Holsenbeck students to see
them as role models.”
Twenty Winder-Barrow
High School students were
selected from a drawing after
all SSR teachers had a chance
to nominate their most diligent
readers, including five foreign
language students who were
selected to read children's sto
ries in both English and either
Spanish or French.
The high school students
read to the elementary stu
dents and then stayed to
answer questions about high
school.
The Reading Committee
members said it would like to
make this a monthly activity
and rotate to other elementary
and middle schools in Barrow
County.
Participating students at
the event included Stephanie
Wilson, David Prae, Robert
Aaron, Josh Timms, Krista
Ivie, Charlotte Lawson,
Samantha McGrath, Whitney
Holcombe, Tenaja English,

Loving, Haley Faulkner,

Sunshine Song, Hector
Salazar, Amy Wright, Jessie
Davidson, Miriam Loza and
Alyssa Berrong.

LeT US SHOW YOU HOW!
It's not what you eat - it 5 s HOW MUCH & WHEN
* Before a holiday event, eat a snack or light meal.
Foods high in protein,
like chicken or cottage cheese,
help you to eat less later
* Fasting before a big meal
or extra trips to the buffet
may lead you to overeat.
* Eat smaller portions of food. A buffet doesn’t
mean try everything! Choose the items you want
to try the most, and eat a small portion of each.
# After a meal, go for a walk
with your family to see
holiday displays
in your neighborhood.
* Be realistic.
Don't try to diet during the holidays; just aim to
maintain your present weight.
