REPORTS ON CRIMES. WRECKS. FIRES & COURTS
Couple arrested for attemped kidnapping of infant
T he parents of a
3-week-old infant
had a harrowing
experience Saturday at a gas
station in Bethlehem when
a Jonesboro man calling on
“Allah” allegedly tried to grab
their baby from a car seat.
The infant’s divorced par
ents, Amy and Michael
McIntyre, reside in other cities,
but had met at the Kangaroo
gas station at 634 Christmas
Ave. to exchange their three
children for a weekend visita
tion.
At 6:20 p.m., a stranger
walked up to the father say
ing, “Allah is great.”
According to a report about
the incident, the man began
talking “crazy stuff repeat
ing numerous times about
‘Allah.’” In response, Michael
McIntyre told the children’s
mother to drive away.
Amy McIntyre was attempt
ing to back out of her park
ing space when the stranger
walked behind her vehicle,
opened a rear passenger door
and while saying repeatedly
that he had a “baby Allah,”
grabbed the arms of the infant
as two siblings watched.
The infant’s father then
tackled the stranger, who let
go of the infant’s arms, and
the two men fought on the
ground.
A female passenger in the
man’s car came over and
tried to pull McIntyre off the
alleged kidnapper. The pair
then hurried to their 1998 sil
ver Jeep. A customer attempt
ed to block the Jeep with his
truck, but the vehicle pulled
out of the parking lot and
headed toward Hwy. 316.
Then, a few moments
later, the Jeep inexplicably
returned.
Deputies arrived at the scene
and arrested both the man and
the woman.
They charged 26-year-
old Basit Olayinka Dawodu
of 330 Arrowhead Blvd. in
Jonesboro with kidnapping,
entering an auto or other
motor vehicle with intent to
commit a felony, and three
counts of cruelty to children
in the 1st degree.
They charged his passen
ger, Yolanda Janice Bennett,
26, of 2309 Summer Ct. in
Jonesboro, with kidnapping.
She told deputies that she had
been Dawodu’s girlfriend for
a year and a half and that
he had been talking about
“Allah” that day and had been
acting different than normal.
Deputies searching
Dawodu’s vehicle found
his Nigerian passport in
the glove box, an expired
Massachusett’s driver’s license
and a valid Georgia driver’s
license. Dawodu and Bennett
were booked into the Barrow
County Detention Center.

Boys, ages 8, 10, arrested
by Auburn Police Dept.
Three boys, two of them 8 and 10, were arrested by Auburn
police officers the day after Christmas for name-calling and
fighting.
According to a police incident report, the 10-year-old boy,
from Loganville, was skateboarding in front of his mother’s
Auburn apartment building on Mount Moriah Road when there
was some name calling.
A 14-year-old boy then allegedly told his 8-year-old brother
to go hit the 10-year-old. The younger boy did that, causing
some redness and slight bruising under his left eye.
The 10-year-old pushed back, but the 8-year-old tackled him
to the ground and hit him several more times before the older
boy could get away and tell his mother. The mother called
Auburn police.
After talking to the boys, the officer decided to charge all
three. Two were charged with disorderly conduct and the third,
apparently the youngest, was charged with simple battery.
“Both parties (adults and children) were made aware of these
charges and were advised that they would receive a letter from
the Department of Juvenile Justice as to a court date for the
charges,” states the incident report.

Winder woman dies in wreck
BY SUSAN NORMAN
A Winder woman was
among 24 people killed on
Georgia roads during the
Christmas holiday weekend.
Ann Marguerite Overbey,
35, died Dec. 26 in a single
vehicle wreck on Pierce Road
just west of Winder.
Georgia State Patrol
Trooper Chris Matthews said
in an interview that the victim
was a front-seat passenger
in a vehicle driven by her
husband, Nicolas Stephan
Overbey. He and two children
in the backseat had minor
injuries.
“The vehicle was traveling
south on Pierce Road, and the
driver was negotiating a curve
and traveled off the west
shoulder and lost control,"
Matthews said. “The vehi
cle struck several pine trees
and overturned and ejected
Mrs. Overbey. They transpor
ted her to B arrow Regional
Medical Center, where she
was pronounced dead."
Matthews said charges
are pending the outcome
of an investigation by the
state patrol’s Gainesville-
based Specialized Collision
Reconstruction Team.
Holiday traffic fatalities
statewide exceeded predic
tions for the long Christmas
weekend.
The state patrol on Monday
announced that 24 people
had died and that there were
3,325 crashes statewide bet
ween 6 p.m. Christmas Eve
and midnight Sunday.
In 2007, there were 18
deaths during the same period.
The state patrol had predicted
19 deaths this Christmas.
“For the second straight
holiday travel period, drizzle
over pails of the state kept
roads wet and contributed to
a higher than expected num
ber of traffic crashes,” states
a Dec. 29 press release.
The next holiday tra
vel period begins at 6
p.m. Wednesday, which is
New Year’s Eve, and ends at
midnight Sunday.
