12 restaurants to participate
‘A Taste of Winder’ set Saturday
Unemployment rate
remains flat in Barrow
A sampling of delicious fare from 12
well-known Winder restaurants will be
featured at the fourth annual “A Taste of
Winder” on Saturday, June 6, from 11
a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event will be held at the Winder
Woman’s Clubhouse, 15 West Midland
Avenue, downtown, just off Broad
Street.
“We’re extremely pleased that Country
Skillet, Fatz Cafe, Georgia Club, Golden
Corral Restaurant, Johnny’s New York
Style Pizza, Little Havana, Little Italy,
KFC-Winder, King Buffet, Shane’s Rib
Shack, Sonia’s Mexican Restaurant, and
Smokin Po Boys are participating,” said
Deborah Landress, president of the club.
Chips of another type — GA-CHIPs, or
the Georgia Child Identification Program
— will be provided free by Davidson
Lodge #103 during the tasting event. A
completed kit will be given to parents to
help them compile their children’s cur
rent, confidential information.
Gathering ingredients of another sort
will be Winder Woman’s Club (WWC)
member Janet Jeanes, who is also vice
chairperson of the Auburn Downtown
Development Authority and a local real
tor and insurance agent. She has contrib
uted six recipes to the WWC cookbook,
and will offer samplings of them during
the Saturday event, too.
“My grandmother was a fabulous cook.
She could take the simplest ingredients
and make a gourmet meal,” Jeanes said.
“I spent a lot of time in the garden and
kitchen with my grandmother, and I still
cherish those memories. During that time
she taught me how to prepare vegetables
and fruits from picking them, preserving
them to serving them. I believe this is
where I developed my love for food, both
cooking it and eating it.”
Families eager to eat the restaurants’
samples and Jeanes’ goodies can par
ticipate in the Taste of Winder easily
as there are five samples or “tastes” for
$5. The tickets can be purchased on
site during the event. By purchasing in
advance, families and friends can get
seven samplings for the same price. The
advance tickets are available at Pam
Veader State Farm Insurance on Center
Street in Winder.

Since the mid-twentieth century,
its recipe books have been collectors’
items.

Rape crisis center launches new hotline, website
A local rape crisis support
center is launching a 24-hour
crisis hotline and interactive
website.
The Piedmont Rape Crisis
Center is a local resource
on sexual assault issues that
run the gamut from sex
ual harassment to rape in
Barrow, Banks and Jackson
counties.
Instead of marking Sexual
Assault Awareness month
with the usual awareness
walk or event, the staff,
board and volunteers of the
group decided to launch the
new hotline and website.
“We are onboard in tack
ling one of our biggest
obstacles to comprehensive
service delivery - bridging
the gap between the three
counties and making our
services more accessible,”
said board president Rachel
Love.
The crisis hotline is staffed
by trained Piedmont Rape
Crisis Center staff and crisis
advocate volunteers who are
open to answering questions,
providing information and
referrals, assisting with the
reporting procedure, or just
listening to caller concerns.
The caller always has the
option of remaining anony
mous and all conversations
are confidential.
The sexual assault crisis
hotline is 770-586-5423.
To complement the hotline
service, the group also
launched an interactive web
site at www.piedmontrape-
crisis.com with the assis
tance of volunteer Natasha
Murphy, owner of Content
to Help.
The website is a forum
designed to function as an
educational tool. It hosts
information about Piedmont
Rape Crisis Center services,
instruction on how to seek
immediate help, resource
sheets on a variety of sexu
al assault issues and a blog
with posts in response to
anonymous questions.
The resource sheets will

TRAUMATIZED
Statham Police Chief Roger Tripp said the engineer was
traumatized by the incident, as were his officers.
“Everybody’s upset,” said the Statham chief. “He was a
real local around here. He was a troubled child, but a lot of
people knew who he was.”
Also affected by Joshua’s death are the staff at the Statham
Public Fibrary, where he was a frequent and well-liked
patron, according to library manager Mary Spencer.
“He was always helpful,” she said. “If another patron
needed help on a computer and we didn’t have time to help
the person, he would step in and help them.
“He’d bring me soft drinks every so often.”
