Church Construction from 1A
Construction of the
Winder facility, and
Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom
Halls world-wide, is done
by a network of all-vol
unteer Regional Building
Committees (RBCs) who
provide the labor, equip
ment and tools needed to
complete each project. Local
congregation members also
help out.
The North Atlanta-based
RBC completing the Winder
Kingdom Hall brings 250-
400 volunteers to the site
every Thursday through
Sunday to provide the spe
cialists and skilled labor
needed to complete all phas
es of the construction, from
lot clearing and grading to
landscaping and interior
design.
“We go from project to
project,” said RBC coordina
tor Lowell Smoker, adding
that his group builds three
or four Kingdom Halls a
year. “The core trade build
ing groups come in as their
various skills are needed.
Our crews are all trained
by professionals who belong
to the crews. Safety is very
important to us — we’ve
never had a volunteer get
hurt on the job.”
The RBC travels with a
large tool and equipment
trailer, whatever heavy
equipment is needed, and a
“kitchen trailer,” where vol
unteers cook and serve meals
to all of the volunteers.
“The site work usually
takes two months,” Smoker
said.
“Then we can get the
building done, from the slab
up in six weeks. They’re all
pretty simple designs and we
build a lot of them.”
Dollar added, “They come
out every weekend, early in
the morning. They usually

have their breakfast and wor
ship service then they get to
work. Some of them work
until dark. It’s wonderful to
see that kind of work being
done.”
Construction for the
Winder Kingdom Hall began
in early May and is projected
to be finished by mid-June.
The new facility will house a
worship hall, libraries, class
rooms and an auditorium, as
well as ample parking.
Dollar said Winder offi
cials have expressed their
appreciation for the new
building and he hopes the
new facility will help the
congregation continue to
expand.
“I think there will be a
lot of response to it,” Dollar
said. “Mainly for the fact
that it’s being done through
all volunteer labor... It’s
inspiring to the congregation
and the community to see all
this happening and no one,
not one person, is getting
paid.”
CARRYING A LOAD FOR JEHOVAH
Like a swarm of busy bees, 200-400 highly skilled, well-
trained and all-volunteer work crews from the N. Atlanta
RBC descend on the site of the new Jehovah’s Witness
Kingdom Hall outside of Winder on Argonne Road to
provide labor, equipment and tools every weekend.
