stumbling and walking away
from the vehicle. The officer
made contact with the com
plainant who verified that it
was his truck, and that the male
suspect the officer saw was the
man who had been sitting in
his truck.
When the officer made con
tact with the suspect and asked
why he was walking around the
parking lot attempting to open
car doors, the suspect responded
that he “had a good beer buzz”
and he didn’t know what he
was doing. The suspect said he
had come to Wal-mart with two
friends, but lost them inside the
store so he came back outside
and was looking for their car.
When the officer requested the
suspect accompany him to his
patrol car, the man asked what
the problem was. The officer
advised that he was responding
to a complaint of him sitting in
someone else’s car. The man
replied "but I didn’t take any
thing.” When the officer asked
again what the man was up to,
the suspect simply stated “man,
I’m just drunk.”
Store employees advised the

man summoned police to report

involved in a one-car accident.
The report was that the red,
1989 Ford Mustang appeared to
have been doing “doughnuts”
in the roadway when it crashed
into a ditch.
When the officer met with
the complainant, the man said
that when he returned yesterday
from being out of town for two
days, his father's car was gone.
When asked why he hadn’t
reported it sooner the man said
it was so late in the evening he
thought it better to wait. The
man told the officer that he had
lost his keys while at the races
in Commerce, and there were
no other keys to the vehicle.
After the officer made the
man aware that the vehicle had
already been recovered, with
the key in the ignition, the man
said perhaps whoever found his
keys in Commerce had driven
to his home and taken his car.
The man suggested maybe one
of his friends did it. When the
officer asked how many friends
he had been with, the man stat
ed he was with one friend, but
he could not provide contact
information for that friend.
The officer advised the com
plainant about the severity of
filing a false report and told the
man to call him if he decided

speak much English, or he sim

noted the smell of an alcoholic
beverage on the driver. When
the driver refused to show his
hands to the officer, he was
physically extracted from his
vehicle, placed into handcuffs
and seated in the rear of the

ing over another woman when
the man grabbed the female
victim by the throat and held
her up against the wall, choking
her. The male juvenile reported
that the suspect then flicked
a lit cigarette down the wom
an’s shirt and when she started
screaming that it was burning
her, the juvenile ran to a neigh
bor's house and called 911.
The female juvenile related the
same story.
When the officer questioned
the female victim, she denied
any physical contact and said
she and her boyfriend were
only arguing verbally, even
though she had red marks on
her neck. The male suspect also
denied any physical contact.
The officer advised the man
that based on his experience
with domestic violence, he was
going to arrest the man for bat
tery family violence and three
counts of third degree cruelty
to children.
The officer advised the
woman about the cycle of fam
ily violence and the phases it
goes through, frequently end
ing in child neglect and abuse,
or worse. The woman began
crying and said she felt she was
already caught in the cycle,
and the officer provided her
with a domestic violence pam
phlet and information on Peace
Place, where she could speak
