Toddler pageant flap goes national
Barrow mom fires back after dressing 3-year-old as hooker
The Barrow County mom at the
center of a national controversy over
how she dressed her three-year-old for
a beauty pageant said this week that
the media has overblown the story.
As part of the cable TV reality
show, “Toddlers & Tiaras,” Wendy
Dickey dressed daughter Paisley in
an outfit that mimicked Julia Robert’s
hooker costume in the movie, “Pretty
Woman.”
A firestorm of controversy ensued
and Wendy found herself on national
television and the subject of various
blogs and editorial page comments.
The shows airs on The Learning
Channel.
But the mom said Tuesday that it’s
all been distorted.
“I’m just tired of the media twisting
our story, adding to it and deleting
from it to make it look however they
want,” she said. “Good Morning
America even reported that I told
them that I was getting death threats.
I have never gotten a death threat, nor
have I ever told any reporter that I
had gotten death threats, but I guess it
makes the story seem more dramatic
to tell. “
Dickey also said the TV show itself
distorted the story line.
“I wish that TLC (the cable net
work) had shown the entire skit show
ing how the character turned from a
bad person into a good person, but
they cut that part of the clip out so
you only got half the story,” she said.
“It’s like hearing about the ugly duck
ling that turned into a beautiful swan,
only they did not show the beautiful
swan.”
The Parents Television Council, a
watchdog group that promotes whole
some family values in the media, filed
a complaint against the TLC series
and called for its cancellation, saying,
“We have a serious problem when
