THE GAME PLAN
The national championship(s)
W e are getting closer and
closer to the college foot
ball national championship game —
and no not the one in January, I’m
referring to Nov. 5 when LSU and
Alabama face off.
Similar to a few years back when
Ohio State and Michigan met as the
No. 1 and 2 teams in the nation, this
year’s contest between No. 1 LSU
and No. 2 Alabama will be one to
remember.
The matchup is being touted as
the national championship since it seems to
be pretty clear that the winner of this game
will go to the BCS national championship,
where they would most likely take the title.
All the experts are saying that whatever
team you throw in front of these two teams
they will obliterate, with the exception of
when they play in November.
I could definitely see either of the two
coming out atop the SEC, but should the
winner of this clash already be viewed as the
BCS national champion?
Well both LSU and Alabama have rolled
off impressive wins so far in the season.
LSU went out of conference to destroy both
Oregon and West Virginia while Alabama
has been tearing up the SEC left and right,
from Arkansas to Llorida.
It seems that no one can stop these two
teams so it will be interesting to see which
one will come out on top.
Right now it seems that the winner will
go on to play Oklahoma, also a team that is
touted to go straight to the title game.
But let’s not forget that the Sooners have
a huge meeting scheduled with BCS ranked
No. 4 Oklahoma State later in the year.
Should the Cowboys come out on top of
the Sooners then you are looking at a very
different picture for the BCS title game.
My projection? I see Alabama pulling
through on Nov. 5 and finishing the season
undefeated to play Oklahoma in the title
game.
It may not be the title game I want to see,
but there is a good chance it will
shape up that way.
The title game I would love to
see would be whatever title game
is the result of a playoff, but I
might be getting a little ahead of
myself there. That’s another topic
for another day.
But who might be able to crawl
back into the BCS title game pic
ture should both Oklahoma and
Oklahoma State lose a game?
Right now you are looking
at Boise State, Wisconsin, Stanford, and
Clemson all undefeated and waiting to see if
something changes.
Boise won’t make it in because they are
Boise — I hate it but that’s how the BCS is
run.
Stanford would be interesting to see in
the Championship game with quarterback
Andrew Luck, but they would first have to
get by Oregon.
Clemson is a surprise team this year, simi
lar to Auburn last year, but they will most
likely drop a game somewhere in the ACC.
So that leaves Wisconsin. Yes, Wisconsin,
who some people are calling the best team
in the country.
Should the Badgers go undefeated and
both the Oklahoma schools drop a game,
don’t be surprised if they sneak their way
into the title game.
It most likely won’t happen, but it would
be nice to see a Big Ten team that’s not
named Ohio State in the title game.
It will probably end up being Alabama and
Oklahoma, which should be a good game.
But it would be so much more fun to see
some of these top teams fight their way into
the title game.
I guess for now we can keep wishing.

STRONG SHOWING

COMPETITION CHEERLEADING
Cheer Cats finish fourth at Parkview
The Apalachee High School competition
cheerleaders took home a fourth place trophy
in the co-ed division at Peachtree Ridge High
School Saturday.
"We had a great day performing,” said AHS
coach Meridith Wages. “There were a few bob
bles and timing issues, but overall we had a solid
performance. Before a hand placement deduc
tion of 10 points, Apalachee's actual perfor
mance earned the third-place rank, right behind
Winder- Barrow (1st) and Ola High School (2nd).
Although the actual scores were a bit lower than
those of WBHS and OLA, our kids really needed
this validation that their hard work is paying off.
that they can be in the top 5.
"I was anxious to see how we would stack up
against some of the other teams in the state that
are of the same talent range as us. We hit a clean
routine for the most part and this is what saved
us. Some of the other teams may have had a bit
more difficulty than us, but I believe cleanliness
is the key and we always strive for just that.”
The AHS junior varsity team has battled some
injuries this season. The JV squad was second
during a meet Oct. 8 at Parkview but injuries
kept the team from being at their best this past
weekend.
"We will continue to work out kinks and plan
for them to finish their season strong with their
third competition this weekend at Loganville and
then the following weekend at WBHS.” Wages
said.
The AHS cheerleaders went back to work this
week among the distractions of Homecoming.
“We, as a team, set goals each week for skills
and scores we wish to achieve,” Wages said.
“After last weekend’s performance at Parkview,
we reflected and dedicated ourselves to hard
work. The kids were proud to see a pay off at
Peachtree Ridge. This success will drive the
kids to continue to improve and believe in them
selves.
“I told the team on Saturday afternoon when
we returned to the school to review and discuss
the score sheets that we must stay focused this
week as there will be plenty of opportunity for
distraction. They all agreed and are willing to
give everything they have during the two hours of
practice each day this week. We like to end prac
tice each day recognizing the gains made during
practice. I prefer for the kids to recognize each
other by asking them ‘What are we leaving with
today that we didn't walk into practice with?’
Most of the time they will recognize one another
for all positive gains. This week my desire is for
everyone to be able to name one thing they have
improved themselves. If we each live up to our
job, the team will take care of itself.”
