Penalties hurt
Bulldoggs vs.
Red Devils Fri.
The Winder-Barrow High
School Bulldoggs struggled
in moving the football on
the Red Devil defense; while
Loganville themselves moved
the ball proficiently down the
field.
Penalties riddled both teams
as the total between the two of
them reached 28 on the night.
While LHS was able to over
come the yellow flags, WBHS
was not.

Captains for the Bulldoggs
included wide receiver Dante
Jones, running back Jamonte
Riden, and linemen Tyler
Pineda and Taylor Pineda.

Riden finished the game
with 107 yards rushing and
a touchdown; the touchdown
came from 28 yards out in the
first quarter.

T he Red Devils of
Loganville High
School played party crash
ers on Friday night when
they defeated the Winder-
Barrow Bulldoggs 42-7 on
Homecoming.
Winder-Barrow tied the
game at 7-7 just over five
minutes into the game, but
shortly after
LHS
turn up the heat
and never look
back.
“I felt like we
came out a little bit flat, but
then we started picking up
some momentum and tied
it up 7-7,” said WBHS head
coach David Wagner. ‘‘We
continued to play hard, but
it’s just a tough game.”
The visiting Red Devils
wasted no time after
receiving the ball to begin
the game. LHS marched
78 yards down the field on
just five plays to take a 7-0
lead. The drive was capped
off of a 2-yard touchdown
run by Braxton Beck just
1:53 into the contest.
The WBHS Bulldoggs
then answered on their
first drive of the game
when senior running back
Jamonte Riden reached the
end zone from 28 yards
out. That run finished an
80-yard drive for the home
team.
Riden rushed for a tough
107 yards on the night and
had to leave the game a
couple times with nagging
injuries.
Loganville would
reclaim the lead on its next
drive when junior Bernard
Merriweather found the
endzone a 3-yard touch
down, giving Eric Godree’s
Red Devils a 14-7 lead with
4:32 left to play in the first
quarter.
A holding penalty stopped
WBHS in its
tracks on the
next posses
sion. It was
a sign of the
night as the
Bulldoggs fin
ished the game with 16
penalties.
‘‘I feel like we had a good
bit of yardage in the first
half, but we kept getting
penalized and had calls that
really stalled out our next
two drives,” said Wagner
after the game.
Winder-Barrow’s defense
forced the Red Devils to
punt before Christian Hodge
threw an interception that
set Loganville up at the
Bulldogg 39-yard line. Two
plays later, junior running
back Hunter Scruggs ran
straight up the middle for
a 31-yard touchdown run,
putting the Red Devils up
21-7.
A burst of excitement
came on Winder-Barrow’s
next drive when junior Chad
Platt ran 59 yards to the end
zone. Unfortunately for the
‘Doggs, it was called back

on a chop block penalty.
‘‘We have not been heav
ily penalized all year,”
Wagner said. ‘‘I feel like
we play clean, hard-nosed
football and it may just be
one of those nights.”
After WBHS punted the
football back to the Red
Devils, LHS senior quar
terback Garrett Ford con
nected with junior wide
out Justin Pollock for a
39-yard touchdown, push
ing the lead 28-7 with just
3:54 remaining in the first
half.
Loganville extended the
lead to 35-7 right before
halftime when senior line
backer Allen Cofer inter
cepted a pass from Hodge
and took it the other way
for a touchdown.
‘‘Two first half turnovers,
several penalties that really
stalled some drives and you
throw that in with a good
football team in Loganville
— it’s a recipe for some
bad things to happen,” said
Wagner.
Winder-Barrow had a
crucial holding penalty on
its first drive of the sec
ond half that forced the
Bulldoggs to eventually
punt the ball away.
Merriweather scored his
second touchdown of the
game, this time 10 yards
out on Loganville’s next
possession. The touchdown
capped off a 10-play, 78-
yard drive which gave the
Red Devils their final score
of 42-7.
In the fourth quarter,
Platt had another long run
where he reached the end
zone, this time from 68
yards, but once again it was
called back on a penalty on
the Bulldoggs.
‘‘We tried to get him
[Platt] more involved
tonight but of course he
had two touchdowns called
back,” coach Wagner said.
Ford finished the game
with 149 yards through
the air with a touchdown;
Merriweather also had a
big night with 97 yards
rushing on ten carries and
two touchdowns.
The Bulldoggs will be
searching for that elusive
win this Friday when they
battle Salem at 7:30 p.m.
Jones returned three kick
offs for a combined total 79
yards, giving Winder decent
field position throughout the
course of the game.
•••
Winder-Barrow’s next con
test will be against Salem
High School (4-4) this Friday
when the Bulldoggs travel to
Conyers in hopes of getting
their first win.
Salem had been in conten
tion for the postseason until a
lopsided loss to Cedar Shoals
last week. The Seminoles have
been up and down all season.
In other Region 8-AAAA
action last week, Flowery
Branch won the highly antic
ipated matchup with fellow
undefeated Heritage 21-13.
The win gives the Falcons the
inside track at winning the
Region 8-AAAA title although
they do still have a game with
Clarke Central in week 10.
A win by the Gladiators in
that contest would likely cre
ate a three-way tie for first
since Heritage has defeated
Clarke Central. A victory by
Flowery Branch would give
the Falcons the region crown
and a No. 1 seed for the state
playoffs followed by Heritage
in second and Clarke Central
in third since it would have
two region losses compared
to Heritage’s one. That is pro
vided the Patriots don’t lose
any additional contests.
