FOURTH ANNIVERSARY OF NEW CHURCH
St. Matthew’s Catholic Church celebrated the fourth anniversary of its new church
recently at Ft. Yargo State Park. Father Leo Holleran and Father Salomon Garcia-
Cortes began the celebration by presiding at the outdoor Mass for the Feast of St.
Matthew. More than 600 parishioners were in attendance. The church has been
in existence since 1965. It operated as a mission serving several parishes in the
community until 1998 when it was designated as a parish for the Archdiocese of
Atlanta.
PRESENTING CHECK
Elinor Hasty (left) and Billie Nye-Muller (right) present a check to Russell Middle
School Band director Jerry Pharr.
Theatre group donates funds to two programs
The Winder-Barrow
Community Theatre recently
donated $400 to the Russell
Middle School Band Booster
Club to help fund a scholar
ship given in the name of Dr.
John Hasty.
The John G. Hasty Memorial
Band Scholarship was set up
in 1993 by the Hasty family
after John's death. He was the
first band director at Russell
Middle School.
The scholarship is given
each year to one or two sixth
or seventh grade band students
so the students can attend an
intensive band camp to help
further their music studies.
Normally, the students attend
the Encore Band Camp at
the Georgia College and State
University in the summer.
The scholarship was
designed to help deserving
students further their music
education and then for them
to be able to use that edu
cation to benefit the band
program during their eighth
grade year.
The check presentation to
director Jerry Pharr was made
by Elinor Hasty, the widow of
John Hasty and a cast mem
ber, and Billie Nye-Muller,
the director and cast member
of the show.
In addition, funds raised
from the benefit show, “Delval
Divas,” were also given to
the theatre group’s Children's
PLAYhouse to help fund and
produce upcoming children's
events.
The funds will be used for
scholarships for children to
the summer drama camps,
the production of two chil
dren's shows during the year,
and continuing the Theatre
Arts for Children program
that takes live theatre into the
local elementary schools.
Delval Divas was presented
at the Winder Cultural Arts
Center for two weekends dur
ing September. The entire cast
donated their time and talents
to this show in order to help
fund these two projects.
