SHERIFF’S OFFICE ARREST REPORTS SHERIFF’S OFFICE INCIDENT REPORTS
Five teens arrested following bus fight Thieves rob area churches of AC
DELVALLE HOUSE ANDREWS TAVERAS
Four Barrow
County high school
students were
arrested on school
disturbance and
affray charges last
week following a
September fight
near buses that cart
students to and
from Apalachee
High School to the
College and Career
Preparatory Academy.
A fifth teen was arrested for the same charges
and a third charge of criminal trespass since he
hadn't been to school since Sept. 1.
Arrested were Andrew Nicholas House,
17, of 1091 Clacktown Road, Winder; Alex
Taylor DelValle, 18, of 644 Manning Gin Road,
Monroe; Ramon Antonio Taveras, 17, of 213
Harvey Lokey Road, Bethlehem and Dessua
Samuel Andrews, 19, of 1310 Keaton Drive,
Winder. One of the five teens arrested in the
incident was a juvenile.
Barrow County Sheriff's Deputy Brett
Maxwell, serving as a School Resource Officer
at AHS, wrote in an arrest report that on Sept.
29, he was on duty monitoring school traffic
when he received a call in reference to a fight in
progress at about 3:30 p.m.
Maxwell responded to the front office when
the fight had already separated. AHS principal
Glenn Wilson told him a fight between five
males had occurred in the bus ramp area. One
teen had visible injuries on his face, according
to the report.
Witnesses said one of the teens involved in
the fight approached him and said, “Where
are your boys?" Apparently, two teens started
yelling back and forth at one another because
one was looking in the vehicle of another. The
altercation became physical when the owner
of the car and his friend began to approach the
other teens.
Barrow Schools superintendent had this to say
regarding the incident: “By responding quickly
and thoroughly to incidents such as this, we
intend to send a strong and clear message that
physical altercations will not be tolerated. We
encourage, practice and support conflict resolu
tion with our students. It is our desire to teach
collaboration and cooperation in the academic
areas as well as social behaviors. We continue
to ask our parents and our community to join us
in these expectations and to use every teachable
moment to advance these ideals.”

Thieves caused $75,0000
worth of reported damage
to a Barrow County church
last week when they made
off with five of the par
ish's air conditioning units.
Authorities said culprits cut
the copper piping in order to
take the condenser units from
the Gospel Light Baptist
Church in Bethlehem, which
were valued at $3000 a piece.
However, the five units are
reportedly outdated and can
not be replaced without swap
ping the entire AC system.
The thieves left behind two
commercial-sized units, as
well, but a new system would
require those be replaced.
The incident is just one report
of recent thefts of AC units
from area churches.
On Oct. 12, Barrow County
Sheriff’s deputies responded
to reports of AC unit thefts at
two Barrow County churches.
Pierce Church in Winder and
Covenant Baptist Church in
Bethlehem were both robbed
of AC units.
The Oconee County
Sheriff's Office respond
ed to a theft of more than
$35,000 worth of air con
ditioning units from the
Bethabara Baptist Church on
Monroe Highway last week.
As a result. Pastor Rob
Bray changed the sign out
side of his church to read,
“You Shall Not Steal the
Lord’s Air Conditioners.”
“I basically did it to draw
attention to what's going
on,” Bray told the Barrow
Journal. “It's pretty low
when you steal from any
body, but it’s even lower
when you steal from God.”
Barrow County Sheriff Jud
Smith said it is unfortunate that
churches have now become
targets of this type of crime.
“I have asked that all the
deputies be on alert and do
extra checks on the churches
when they can,” he said.
The sheriff’s office advises
church staff and preachers to
have different members or
staff to check on the church
during the week. Checking
at night after hours may also
possibly deter criminals who
may be watching the church
es to insure no one comes by
after hours and at night.
If any one notices unknown
vehicles in or around the
property, notify local law
enforcement by calling 911
and try to get a description of
the vehicle or a tag number.
