•failure to notify owner
upon striking unattended
vehicle at an Atlanta Highway
parking lot. A Winder man
said he was in the Subway
restaurant when an employee
from the nail salon next door
informed him that a white
Ford 150 struck his vehicle.
The nail salon employee pro
vided a tag number to the
officer and they were able to
return a name on the tag back
to a Hickory Ridge Trail,
Winder, man. The officer
went to the residence of the
vehicle’s owner and a man
answered the door. The man
said his son used his truck to
drive to Subway in order to
get food. The officer’s asked
the man’s son if he backed
into a vehicle in the park
ing lot. The man’s adult son
admitted to possibly hitting
another vehicle and driving
off. The officer issued him a
citation.
•harassment at a Mount
Moriah Road residence. A
Jefferson woman told police

ing text messages from her

wanted to have the incident
documented.

offense at Browns Bridge
Road and Bradford Park
Drive.
•lost/mislaid property on
4th Avenue. A man came into
the police department and

but he lost his Georgia driver’s
license. An officer advised
the man that he would com
plete a report for him, but it
would be information only.
The man further advised
that he could not apply for
another ID card without first
obtaining a police report.
•prisoner transport on
Mount Moriah Road. An offi
cer stopped a car for going 62
miles per hour in a 35 miles

Firefighters struggle to
get to blaze at old winery
The contents of a former winery located off Ga. Hwy.
124 in Braselton burned in a blaze that required firefighters
from Jackson and Barrow counties and the Georgia Forestry
Commission, according to incident reports.
The former Chestnut Mountain Winery is located off the state
highway and can be seen from the Interstate 85 northbound
lanes, near the Ga. Hwy. 211 exit ramp in Braselton. A neigh
bor in the adjacent Savannah Oaks subdivision called 911 on
Sunday, Oct. 9, to report smoke in the wooded area.
Barrow County firefighters walked from the man’s house on
Forsyth Park Lane to a fire in the winery, according to an inci
dent report. The boxes and wine bottles in a shipping area of the
abandoned commercial building were on fire.
Due to overgrown vegetation in the area and a lack of road
access to the old winery, Barrow County firefighters asked the
Georgia Forestry Commission and a brush truck from the West
Jackson Fire Department to help cut a path to the building.
The forestry commission cut a path to the old winery and the
WJFD brush truck followed, according to an incident. The state
agency also cut access to the building and a wide break around
it, should the fire have spread elsewhere.
By the time firefighters reached the building, its contents had
put themselves out and were smoldering, due to a lack of fuel.
Barrow County and West Jackson firefighters extinguished hot
spots in the area.
The Chestnut Mountain Winery hasn’t been open in a num
ber of years. The 29-acre property is owned by Dewey White,
according to Barrow County tax records.
